Quote:
Freemasonry is the oldest and largest world wide fraternity dedicated to the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of a Supreme Being. Although of a religious nature, Freemasonry is not a religion. It urges its members, however, to be faithful and devoted to their own religious beliefs.

Most of are Founder Fathers were Freemasons and it was a secret society until some Prince exposed them and started murdering them for some reason or another, I can't remember the specifics on that but they fled from that country and established themselves in other places, in order to be a freemason you must be invited into it however you can be a Junior Mason is your young enough, most of their history is shrouded in misinformation so not much clear facts is known about them other than originally they were just construction workers. However some conspiracies state that they wish to rule the world and that the War in Iraq is part of their planning to establish a Middle East Base. Most conspiracies aren't based on real fact or if they are it's not that clear a fact and they just speculate, in any event the Eye of the Pyramid on the back of the Dollar bill is a Free Mason symbol but no one actually knows what it's for other than the Free Masons of course. Source- Memory of a History Channel Special on them and some Conspiracy Theories i happen to read.

Actually, the stuff is apparently not Masonic - the Freemasons deny the eye and pyramid motif are theirs, though conspiracy theorists try to tie the eye to the Masonic Eye of Providence, the benevolent eye of the maker. 3nodding

Actual symbolic meaning of the thirteen stepped unfinished pyramid - part of the Great Seal of the United States - is found here. biggrin

I don't know much about them, but my grandfather's one. You have to swear an oath of loyalty to them above anything else, which is why my sibs, my mom and I won't join.

Has everyone been watching the History channel???

On the documentary it said that they are decendents of the masons who built the pyrimids of Giza. And that they are a big part of the founding of America and Washington DC is layed out to look like their symbol. The mathmatical square and the compas. And of course their main headquarters are in DC, but I don't remember what it said their beliefs are.

Would that I could. And Tru TV - I love me some crime. Alas, no TV for me. 3nodding

I've heard it was the Temple of Solomon construction crew they traced lineage from. I could be wrong, but that was always the story as I was pitched it. 3nodding

Those parts are much more likely to be true - there are roads that can be traced in the Washington area that create not only the square and compass, but also the five-pointed star and the triangle image the square and compass are usually backed on.

This has been attributed variously to a Freemason city planner, grand conspiracy, or just the human brain's habit of really liking patterns in things and the whole city being based on previous cities and their grand styling rather than an actual plan.

Actually, I can't find any documents that claim that area is anything but the Scottish Rite seat for one specific area of one country - there are a bunch more for other districts and nations. Seriously. I did try to look. 3nodding

Here you go then, from the website of Scottish Rite itself:

Quote:
Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. While it is a requirement that each member believe in a Supreme Being, it is not important how one expresses that very personal belief. Further, there is no dogmatic system in Freemasonry. However, confusion about the secular nature of Freemasonry has been a common misconception for many years. Most likely, this misconception is due to the Holy Book that sits on the altar in the middle of a Masonic lodge. This Holy Book does not have to be Christian, like the Bible, rather it can be any Holy Book that is important to the members of the lodge. In the U.S. where the population is mostly Christian, the Holy Book most often used in Lodges is the King James Version of the Bible.

Is Freemasonry or the Scottish Rite a secret society?

Absolutely not, the Scottish Rite and other forms of Freemasonry operate very much in the open with many events open to the public. There are “modes of recognition” (passwords and handshakes) that represent a Mason’s ability to keep a promise.

I don't know how you did that section thingy xp I don't remember what all that documentary said, but I do remember them saying a HQ was in DC. Maybe it isn't the main. Not sure. I can't really remember that whole documentary. But thanks for that quote. I'm sure that will help the other in this thread too. They seem to be very illusive.

The list is massive. This is only the first few links to their official stuff. I mean, if you really want it, they'll even rent out their local hall for events. 3nodding

I knew I spelled ellusive wrong. I didn't know there was so much info on them. The documentary was describing them as very secretive. Weird...

*giggles* It happens.

They get mistaken for really secretive because they do have some stuff they don't share with the general public - like the exact contents of their rites and rituals. They are, after all, a fraternal order that insists the only way you get the whole entire story is by being a Mason, and to be one, you need to be recommended by one.

But they're honestly a fairly open and friendly group, and like people to ask questions about them. They're generally pretty willing to teach you their history, what a lot of their symbolism is, all sorts of stuff. You just need to show them a legit interest in it. biggrin
