Secret Little Obsessions
They were sitting on the grass working on their homework. The people walking by noticed nothing strange about them. They were sitting under a tree enjoying the cool day. Of course that was just looking from a distance. If you got close to the girls you could just make out their lips moving. And unless they let you get really, really close you couldn’t hear them. No one got that close.
The taller girl seemed to be staring at a math book and then answering questions on a piece of paper, her brown hair occasionally falling over her shoulder covering her light blue-silver eyes. The shorter girl was just writing. Her wavy brown hair in a pony-tail, and her violet eyes locked on the page. Neither noticed the presence of anyone else in the park. They did notice the sun setting, and they definitely didn’t notice it get dark.
“Erika, what time is it?” the taller girl asked.
“I have no idea,” Erika responded. Finally the taller girl looked up. She stared at the sky.
“It’s dark,” she said. Erika looked up.
“Wow Bree, glad you finally learned how to tell if it was dark.”
“Shut up.”
“Shutting up.”
“I have to go. I’m going to be dead.”
“Alright, I’ll talk to you later.” Erika promised. As Bree stood up she gathered her things and started walking off in the direction of her house . Erika soon stood up herself and stared up at the moon for a minute or two before her thoughts were interrupted.
“Pretty, right?”
Erika turned to look at the male standing behind her. He had midnight black hair, hard blue calculating eyes, but a soft expression on his face. He was at least 6’2’’. Erika glared slightly as she recognized the guy.
“Well yes Mathew. It is a ‘Pretty’ moon. But what gave you the right to come up and talk to me?” She huffed as she quickly grabbed her things and turned heading in the direction of her home.
“No reason at all. Why was Bree in such a hurry?”
“Her parents will get mad if she’s late again.” She said thinking it was the greatest explanation he should get. He shrugged.
“I don’t see why you both still live with your parents. Why don’t you get a dorm or buy yourselves an apartment?”
“Hey that’s not such a bad idea. I’ll talk to Bree about it later on the phone. Anyways, you’re here for a reason otherwise you wouldn’t even talk to neither of us in public.”
“Bingo!” He smirked.
“Gee, don’t tell me, another mission? Or is it a meeting this time?” she quirked an eyebrow.
“Both. Tonight at midnight, the usual spot. Get Bree to sneak out. This time Jonathan is going to come. Then you know it’s mandatory.” He shrugged. He looked at his wrist watch. “Better get going I have to inform the rest of the group. You know, Jane, Auburn, Seth and Natalie. Cya later.”
He winked and then disappeared. She sighed before pulling out her cell and dialing a number. “Hey Bree.”
“Hey what’s up? I thought you were calling later.”
“Yea, change in plans... I guess?”
“Guess who showed up at the park five minutes after you had left?”
“No way…MATT!?”
“Yep,”
“What did he want?”
“Told me there’s a meeting tonight and it’s mandatory.”
“Sheesh. What time?”
“Midnight.”
“You’re kidding me. Why tonight?”
“Ask Jonathan” she hissed.
“Jonathan? He’s coming?”
“Yes”
“Do you think you can sneak me out?”
“Ask your mom if you can sleep over. You know my mom doesn’t care if you come over. Plus I’m going to be lonely for two weeks or so. She’s going to a witch convention in New York.”
“Really? Ok , I’ll ask my mom. Hold on.”
“…”
“Yea, my mom said its ok. But...”
“Why is there always a but?”
“Yep, you have to promise and make those delicious cookies she likes,” laughed Bree.
“Oh. We can do those together.”
“Ok. Then I’ll be there in forty minutes.”
“Ok!”
Erika closed her phone as she walked into the house. Putting the keys into the basin next to the door she smiled. “Mom! I’m home, and Brees coming over tonight.”
A young woman stepped out of the kitchen with an apron on and a huge smile. Her hair was brown and straight her eyes were two blue shinning orbs. “Bree is coming over? Really? How exciting. I hope you two don’t stay up too late. I’m just finishing making dinner. Then I have to go get changed and leave. My flight leaves at ten.” She said and went back into the kitchen whistling to a sweet lullaby she used to sing to me all the time when I was young.
“Mom, wouldn’t it be faster with magic?”
“Nonsense, I like getting my hands dirty.”
Both laughed. Erika set her bag on the couch and then walked into the kitchen to get an apple.
“What time is Bree getting here at?”
“Thirty minutes,” Shrugged Erika, as she plopped down on the couch taking a bite from her apple. Her mom nodded as she washed her hands and took off her apron hanging it on a nail.
“I’m going to go get ready. I’ll be down in an hour to leave. Help yourself to the food, Oh and Bree too if she hasn’t eaten.” She said quickly as she disappeared up the stairs. Erika shook her head as she grabbed a magazine from the table. Flipping it open she set herself comfortably quickly loosing track of the time passing her by. A chime aroused her from her readings and she looked up slightly confused. The chime went off again and she gasped rushing to the door remembering it was the door. Sliding across the ground she almost crashed into the door as she skidded to a stop. She opened the door.
“It seems so long since we last talked,” Winked Erika at a grinning Bree.
“I KNOW!” laughed Bree as they both walked into the living room, “Your mom?”
“Upstairs, getting ready,” She said “are you hungry?”
“Erm...Well...I guess so?” she shrugged.
“Ok! Then let’s eat. My mom is not coming downstairs till like five minutes before she has to leave,” They both walked into the kitchen and looked into the pots.
“She made pasta.”
“And salad”
“Yummy.”
They both got plates and served each other, “Soda? Juice? Oh wait I know! GATORADE!”
“You know it!” They both laughed and ate their food.
“Erika? Are you in the kitchen?” Mom’s head peeked into the kitchen. “There you are! Oh and Bree! Welcome.”
“Hi Mrs. Hart.”
“Mrs. Hart? That makes me sound too old. Call me Allison or Mom. I prefer the later,” Smiled mom. “Oh yes. I have to go now. I’ll be back in a week or two. Take care of the house while I’m gone.” She kissed Erika on the forehead and hugged Bree then disappeared out the door. They both looked at each other with a serious expression.
“How much longer till the meeting?”
“Two hours.”
