I really want to watch the original Transformer cartoons (if only to educate myself and participate in forums). I've found original VHS with the Transformer cartoons (Seasons one and two!) and a DVD titled Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Is this DVD one that has the original cartoons on it, or is this just a different story line and I should go with the VHS ones?

The tagline "Robots in Disguise" has been used in multiple series. I don't think we could tell you about the DVD without seeing it. Could you show us any kind of picture of it?

If you are searching for the ORINGINAL and FIRST cartoon series, it would be Generation 1 Transformers or back then it was just called Transformers. That is the first, and it came out back in the 80's. The tagline used on it would be 'More Than Meets The Eyes'. But G1 is the first cartoon series.

"Robots In Disguise" may have been put on a DVD collection from any era really in reference to the DVD itself. They do things like that.

I don't have the box (I saw it at a library where I work- it hardly ever goes out! crying ), but I'm figuring it just might be safer to go with the VHS anyway. I'll probably get teased by my dad for watching cartoons, but I can live with that... I hope.

Ah, well, if it's at a library then I'd say go ahead and watch them both. If the DVD ends up being the more recent series then it's not like it'll hurt you to watch it. RiD was a fun series.

(Most of Armada hurt to watch, though. Somewhere between the low production values of the animation and the scripting that managed to get the characters names right a good 75% of the time, it causes DEEP HURTING.)

VHS = G1 or G2 (I have them so I know) G1 there are 12 volumes in cardboard boxes and G2 you find them in movie cases like those for Disney movies (made out of plastic).

Either or they would be the "original". G2 added some cheap graphics but essentially it is the same story and episodes just randomized.

Okay, I checked the titles of the 'first' episodes mentioned on the backs of the above mentioned movies (waaaaay above). The DVD calls the episodes "More than meets the Eye" and is in 3 parts. The VHS doesn't give a real title, but says this episode has Megatron take over Optimus's body in order to trick the other Autobots into going into a valley full of Kryptonite-like material that shuts down Transformers (the episode mentioned right after is the Decepticons trying to take over the Empire State building in order to take over New York).

Does that help narrow down anything ? (I really just need to check them out when I go back to the library...)

That would be helpful... except all libraries have a standard VHS box that they put the movies. crying Original boxes (plastic or otherwise) were thrown away. Box art was kept if necessarry, but usually the front and back was just copied, stuck on the library-standard box, and the rest was given/thrown away.

If you're not sure what the Original 80s series looks like then just go on Youtube and type in Transformers G1. You'll see plenty. At least enough to know what it looks like.

And if the Library doesn't have what you want than oh well. Another one might. I know I got my first G1 Season One DVD on sale at a Borders Bookstore. So, they're still out there, despite their age.

Just stay away from anything with the words "Kiss" and "Player" in the same title. What has been seen....CANNOT be UNseen! burning_eyes

Thanks for the warning, though it comes a little late. Read the dream topic? That's horrible enough! eek Anyway, I did check out the movies. Both are the 80's cartoons, though one seems to have show them in a random order. Thanks for all your help! biggrin

More than Meets the Eye is the original 3 part episode that starts the series off.

The Empire State building episode is in Season 2 (forget which episode number that is) and the one about Autobots being damaged by a substance is either late season 1 or early season 2 smile

Hope that helps and yes those are G1. smile

Once again, thank you for answering my questions. I did enjoy the cartoon parts that I did watch (though I was ready to do the Decepticons a favor and kill that dumb kid Spike by the end of the DVD).

LOL. Teletoon has been doing G1 TF in their retro times. You might want to keep an eye out for those smile
