omg okay, so my aunt was sending a special order of lobster to two of her uncles in central BC for Christmas dinner (as a special thank you for helping us out of a real jam by driving one of our U-hauls across Canada for us at moment's notice! surprised )

So, there was a huge mix up, and instead of going to Vancouver or Calgary and transferring to the small airport near Cranbrook... it was shipped to the final destination of Vancouver... hundreds of KMs away... and because of the shipping weight restrictions because of the holiday season.... NO WAY of sending them to Cranbrook. These are live lobsters, folks, pulled out of St Mary's Bay int he Bay of Fundy the night before last. But they can't survive much longer in this shipping state...

So my dad picked them up from the airport for us. He tried to fandangled a way to send them up in time, but even he couldn't do it (my dad has some major connections... he used manage a huge air cargo company there with several contracts. He now does federal dangerous goods inspections for aviation, so still knows everyone there)

SOOO he has them on his balcony right now. He can't eat them all, so I offered them to my BFF Steph and her family for freez because otherwise they will just die.

BUT the hilarious thing is... my aunt bought the largest fresh lobsters she could find in the lobster capital of the world *s**t eating grin* There are two 10 lbs lobsters in that container, and one 2 lbs lobster.... which is what you would normally find on your plate xd

My dad asked me if he could keep a 10lber and the Bendo's take the 2 and other 10. I said "If you want to" He still had not opened the box, he was creeped out by the sounds they were making. I MSNed Steph while she is on her way to my dad's place, that my dad wanted to keep one of the 10lb... but he has not seen them yet, so once he opens that box he might change his mind and keep the small one, so be prepared to get two 10lb. Just as I send that message, dad calls me yelling and squeaking "OH MY GOD THEY ARE FREAKING HUGE!! DID YOU KNOW THEY WERE THAT BIG!? THEY ARE SCARING ME! I DON'T HAVE A POT THAT BIG! IS THERE A RADIATION LEAK SOMEWHERE??" etc etc, I was laughing so hard xd Man I wish I was there for that

I had to explain to him we were getting them for my great uncles that big for the novelty of it... apparently they don't taste as nicely was a 3lb one, but that wasn't the point, how many people in the Rocky Mountains get fresh lobster for Christmas Dinner?? Let alone monsters *snickers*

What was also great was when I called Steph to ask her if her family wanted a free fresh lobster dinner *tonight*. Steph wasn't home, her dad answered, I said, "That's okay, I"ll just talk to you then..." And he was all like "oh??" and I made my offer, and he was so pants shittingly excited, he was babbling away, I could hear his wife asking him WTF he was going on about and to talk sense and who was he talking to, and he made some weird reference I couldn't understand, but apparently I am some sort of Nova Scotian Goddess xd

I told them I wanted pictures, so once I get them, I'll post the suckers. I hope they are as big as the ones I saw at the lobster pond last week, they were disgusting!! And had barnacles growing on them XD

I had to email instructions to them on how to handle them. Especially at that size... if you hold it near the tail they can cut your fingers or hand off! Let alone the claws, which you have to free before putting them in the water because you don't want to boil rubber bands... it would make everything taste icky. But seriously, very dangerous. When I told Dad to read my email before handling them, because they could cut yoru fingers off he cried "Cut your fingers!?!? These guys can cut whole limbs off!!!! I am so afraid of the ocean now! I don't ever want to go in it again!"

And I told them the art of cooking a lobster...

And if they were too big for the pot, how to kill them first. And that the brains are apparently delectable, so don't over look them xd It's been a very odd evening for me

Note that the tails are curled under on the big ones

Anyways, this was attached to my dad's email.

I kept the smaller of the two big ones. I was going to get the little one but was afraid to reach in under the big one to get it. The freaking thing is as big as my dog.

I have no idea what it tastes like, I do not eat seafood, I have an incredible aversion to it. The concept of it, the smell of it cooking... I've lived my whole life practically metres from the ocean, and can't imaging being land locked... but I can not, will not, eat food that came from water (fresh or salt).

But, yes, apparently you eat it with melted butter and lemon (or roasted garlic) like you would with crab, but it doesn't taste like crab, anymore more than shrimp or prawns do. But it's in the same family of flavour... or something. Okay, I just asked my Grandma... she just told me that crab is more delicate, and lobster has a richer flavour.... you can eat more crab in a sitting than lobster, if you understand that concept.

My mum's boyfriend (Marcel) told me that lobster was 'poor man's food' when he was a kid. Kids who came to school with a lobster sandwich were embarrassed and the kids who had baloney sandwiches would mock them XD And one of my mum's friends said when she was a kid, when company was coming, they would hide the shells because they didn't want people to know they ate lobster. A lot of people around here used to use them as fertilizer! Lobster used to be caught to feed prisoners on east coast US prisons, and was considered just one step above feeding them rats. It's the same kind of revolution that happened to oysters. Oysters used to be considered poor man's food, but now it's expensive. It is all about PR; it's not like either of these things are actually rare or anything.

As it is, during peak season (Feb), lobster is cheaper than hamburger around these parts. People go door to door selling them, or off the backs of their trucks. 3 dollars a pound you can get them for, ones missing a claw or something... not pretty enough to sell as export. And the McDonalds around here sell a "McLobster" it's a lobster salad sandwich. At freaking McDonalds xd

Marcel went to Europe a few years ago, he saw Nova Scotia lobster in a Parisian restaurant for the equivalent of $50 a pound! We paid only $4 a pound for these ones we sent xd

Apparently the mouth of St. Mary's Bay (where I live, it's a bay within the Bay of Fundy) is the richest coastal lobster bed in the world. A lot of "Maine Lobsters" are actually fished from Nova Scotian waters xd Grandma just handed me a newspaper clipping...

Quote:
Generally speaking, the industry catches 25 million pounds, plus or minus, in Southwest Nova for the month of December

The scallops fished around Digby (northeast of me 30 km) are 'world famous'. And everyone goes clamming up and down the coast... free dinner.
Alls I know is that right after a good storm, I like to go to the beach to collect all the sea glass washed up on the beach. And you often find live lobsters, crab, and scallops right up there with you.

On the Pacific coast we used to go look for geoducks (gooey duck). Man! Those are sick! They look like giant penises and an old man's scrotum. And after you flash cook them, you peal this membrane off that ends up looking like you are ripping off a condom. More please? I think not.

Gooey Ducks ARE pretty disgusting. I've never eaten one, but I've helped dig for them with my Aunt before. confused

They can been dangerous too - their shells can be sharp, and believe it or not they know how to use 'em. eek

All I can say is HOLY ******** those are goddamned massive and sooooo gross and soooooo creepy!! emo

Sucks they screwed up the order so your uncles didn't get their lobster, but holy hilarity batman at the results. rofl

I don't eat seafood of any kind either. Those p***s clam things look completely revolting. rofl

Super sucks you couldn't get them to the intended destination though, those are REALLY expensive and shipping them live costs a lot too, so it seems like a bit of a waste that way, however, I was glad to see pics, holy snickerdoodles! GIANT hardly covers it!

Yeah it cost us $200 to buy and ship them. And seeing as how we have to do it *again* next week, it's going to cost us another $200 rolleyes Such is life.
This time we need to make sure they have the correct airport code.
