I would say learn the associations of flowers, herbs, spices, oils, animals, feathers, fur and stones. From there you can mix them to create your own potions for your purposes. I have once run across an idiots guide to potions, also try looking in some of the kitchen witchery books or the herbal magic books (Cunningham has one, it is really good) , those will likely contain a few as well. An author who has a fair few potions and folk magic is Judika Illes. She has an encyclopedia of spells that would help to.

He heh you all are so cute here let me give you all some pointers about potions making.
First the basics Potion making is also called Alchemy and each male and female witch in a coven should know something about be it great or small. To make potion you dont really know to know how to cook it is quite simple is all honestly.
Type Then there are different types of potions, love potions, sleep, fortune, luck and such like that. There are some you drink and some you do not.
How to... to make a potion is simple first what kind do you want. Your typical potion now and days you keep in a vial for the affect to work, so if you want a love potion ( Rosemary, tyme, and nutmeg) you will boil these herbs together for at least 30 mins in about one cup of fresh spring water. and you will let it cool then you bottled it and whenever you need it take a little dab of it on your wrist and keep the vial with you.
??? what if you do not know what you want? There are books about this stuff and I am very knowledgeable about so you can pm me if you want.

no it is not called Alchamy, I have never heard anything like this in my 14 years of practice. a potion is also known as a philter and there is alot more too it then adding the herbs that are assosiated with the outcome you want. you have to know what amount you want to add for what reason and how the spell will effect the person it is used on. another thing is that some potions contain herbs that are poisoness and can cause many unpleasant effects to the body, I would trust that you wouldnt want to drink a philter that had a excess amount of mandrake? no of course not and the same goes for henbane, acconite, or even somthing like Lobilia. ppl please be careful with these herbs and such, they are dangerous and they are not toys, this isnt chamred nor is it a game it is an ancient practice that should be respected. really its not cute when ppl are ignorant of the dangers of their practice, its actually kind of scary.

3death3 is right, there are a lot of plants that could poison you if you use them wrongly or use too much, so you should learn a lot about the ingredients you are planning to use, and any possible side-effects they might have, before you start using them. Even if they aren't poisonous, they could still have unwanted effects on you, and some herbs can even weaken or ruin the effects of certain medications.
As for pointers, I've read that it's best to keep potions with oils in them in darkly-colored glass bottles (I think the dark color keeps light from weakening the effects?), and it's also best to store them in the refrigerator to protect against evaporation.

the reason you use dark glass is to keep light out, because the light quickensthe decomposition of the herbs andthe natural enzimes of the herbs. and a potion is just a infusion of herbs that has been given magical intent and direction.

This is why people must look this stuff up I guess I did not explain everything well enough so let me start over.
TO make potion you must know what you are doing. So required certain herbs to be used on certain at certain hours. Many herbs are dangerous and naturally those potions you do not drink you just keep them in vials like i said previously. For certain potion like a love potion to work you must used a specific recipe if you dont it will go wrong. For an ancient Celtic love potion you must use 1 twig of mistletoe, 1 twig or rosemary and 3tbsp of lavender. All of these ingredients must be boiled in holy water (3 cups) for ten minutes then you take out the herbs and in a mortar you grind them and combine the water and grind herbs in one vial. this is enough for two vials. one for you and one for the love. Then one the full moon you must lift the the two vials to the moon and recite your full name and your loves full name and say "love shall conquer so mote it be" then give one vial to your love as a present. The way it works if the love takes it he likes you if not then its not ment to be. If he takes it keep your vial with you and when you think you do not need simply get both vials back and neutralize the potion by throwing it in fire. The point of this potion/spell is to see if the one you like likes you and to give you confidence.
So if you do not anything about herbs, recipes and so fourth do not make potions for something bad will happen. You must research things you must know what herbs look like etc.. so please do be careful and again my fault for not explaining it better

If you're not growing your own, you can get fresh herbs in a lot of grocery stores, usually in the produce section. Or for dried herbs, look in aisles with cooking spices. If you can't find them in a regular grocery store, check at an organic or health food store.
