Ignore him, he'll get bored. Or if you really want to get into it, isn't normal clothing "Petropunk" or whatever he calls it. Think about it, steampunk is based on the time period when steam was the main mode of power. But the time-period where petrol is most used is this time period, so he might as well slap on jeans and a tee-shirt.
You could argue that, but steam was the principle source of fuel for an incredibly extended period of time. If you really want to get technical, the use of coal and coke goes back even further, but perhaps that's splitting hairs.
Anyway, just because we still use petrol today doesn't mean it has to be a contemporary style. Lots of people harken back to the 'golden age' of the 50s and how they could have (or should have been) in the minds of wild retro-futurists! Not only that, but you have the whole 'mad max' considerations as well.
You could also argue (see above post) that as we still use steam in our power stations, I could slap on a pairs of jeans and call myself a steamer because steam is now used in every concern of the globe to generate electricity on a global scale.
The point I'm trying to make is that dieselpunk (or petrolpunk or lead-freepunk, whatever) isn't a contemporary style or fashion, unless you especially want it to be. We use a huge amount of computers now, so why aren't we thinking ourselves as cyberpunks? You can get mind controlled robot arms now!
If we are to assume that oil is what makes dieselpunk dieselpunk, then we have just over a hundred years of history to potentially draw from. Why does it have to be now?
Just as with steampunk, you have two centuries of maybes to play with! From the start of the industrial revolution all the way through to almost the second world war (and perhaps after it when they got rid of steam engines and my point about power stations).
Steampunk to each person is their own individual canvass. Why can't this 'petrolpunk' be the same?
biggrin It certainly was rather rude what he said, I'll agree with you their, but don't write us off man! You're treading on our dreams!
