I really feel like I should put this in the Actual Literature sub forum but I thought that this was related to ideas and arguments posed by fan girls enough to make it here. But then again.
So we got an assignment in English class to read a short story. Our teacher looked really smug handing it out too, apparently because of the twisted ending she said.
So I read it. I really liked it too.
The short story was "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" By Joyce Carol Oates. And I had also just had another argument with the resident Twitard about the creepy-ness of Edward in Twilight.
The short story is about a girl named Connie who has trashy daydreams and wants to be one of the "older kids" She pretty and knows it and takes advantage of it. Then a guy named appears calling himself Eddie and at one point while talking to her says that he's going to get her. Connie just brushes this off as nothing until the next day he appears under a different name trying to get Connie to come with him and eventually manipulates and forces her to leave her house and get in the car. All the while he says that he's going to show her what love is like.
While I know a lot of the short story is based on a real murderer and there are lots of interpretations dealing with the devil and whatnot. I just thought that this is a lot like the Edward Cullen that a lot of girls are probably envisioning in their minds, Edward after all shows a lot of control and abuse (while subliminal because Bella narrates it) and it is interpreted as romantic and kind. Yet in the short story Connie acted in a more realistic way by telling him to leave and threatening to call the police instead of fawning over it.
The short story if anyone wants to read it.So what do you guys think? Have you ever read this before? I thought Connie's whole situation sounded just like the idea Twitards have been given about what they think they want, agree, disagree?
I'm sorry for bringing Twilight and another good piece of writing on the same page.
On a completely unrelated topic I got my permit today.
