So, I'm going to be moving this weekend and I've been given the opportunity to get a new bookshelf for my new room (yay!). [Successfully moved in/bookshelf acquired :3 ]
What I wanted to know is what do you guys look for when you buy a bookshelf?

honestly, sigh, i'm really cheap. i usually go to target and get the cheaper shelves there. they have nicer ones that you can get for around 100 bucks.
i usually get the pressed wood stuff. it's not too bad of quality, and i usually get black, so if a shelf breaks or something, i can use the old changeable shelf boards on the new bookcase biggrin

Well, I use my wardrobe shelves. They're quite wide, which allows for more books, plus they hold my clothes!

When i look for acquiring a bookshelf, i look for shelf space. I have a lot of books, and i need a lot of shelf space. I like bookshelves that have adjustable shelves, so i can change the heights, for paperbacks or hardbacks, or the pesky oversized tomes. Also i tend to like lighter bookshelves (in weight, not color) so that i can move them when the need arises, or when i want to rearrange furniture at one in the morning.
In the end, i feel it's the books that matter, not the shelf they sit upon. As long as it's serviceable, it's good.

...birds creep over tin roofs, like criminals with tap shoes... I Hear ThunderFirstoffall. Is it sturdy? will it be able to handle my books? And arrangeable shelves is always a plus, and i want walls on the sides, those spacey bastards tend to let the books fall out if you pack them to hard. :/
And something to think about if you are thinking about getting even more books, is to check if its gonna be made for a while in the future, so you can get matching shelves ;D
And i rather like mine to be in wood.
But Theres No Rain ...stain the glass with windows, extortionate and cold stare...

I only care if it can fit and support all my books...
I once had a bookshelf that couldn't support many books...
I wanted to kill it... mad

My new bookshelves are very fun so I'll tell you about them. I had my Husband make me "shelves" which are individual boxes about 1ft deep and 1'x2' long and wide. I can stack them sideways for paperbacks and tall ways for Hardcovers and I have them kind of jigsawed together with books in the spaces between. If I want to move them I can stack them completely different. Now I just need him to make me about 3 times as many! Other than these I have only owned the el cheapo walmart kind; which do work fine.

I'm not sure where my first bookshelf came from...it's still standing and supporting the books I put on it. I bought a second one earlier this year, a black wooden one from Target. It was cheap enough, and it holds up well. I'm going to need another one soon, so I'm just going to get another black one...the first one was white, so I thought I could make it alternating black-white-black. biggrin

I used to go for cheap shelves--now I go for durable. Some of my first shelves were plastic, and now they all sink in the middle from the long-term weight of the books. Even the pressed wood holds up a little better, but if I could afford them, I'd get real wood or heavy metal.

The pressed wood ones also sag in the middle. My mom has a pressed wood cupboard full of books and the only reason the shelves haven't broken yet is because they're resting on the books on the shelf underneath. >.<
Personally I try to go for real wood for all my shelves.

I couldn't care much for the color or shape as long as it's sturdy enough to hold the weight of all my books since there are many. My previous one tended to curve under the weight of it. As a bonus I do prefer my book shelf in wood and have arrangeable shelves as well.

Look for something sturdy, adjustable shelves & if possible with glass doors to keep the dust off your books.
Ikea has some great options.

I usually spend about $35 on bookshelves..really doesn't matter to color, they're made of wood. I tend to go for the tall ones.

Glass doors, because my lovebird always liked to hide in the shelf and chew up my covers... luckily, they were only dust covers... but I still didn't like it.

I no longer buy bookshelves from Target. On our first move, their $45 5 foot bookshelf had a critical failure, then splintered apart, injuring several friends helping us move.
I look for sturdier, older bookcases, usually at garage sales or goodwill. I need a large one for my YA collection, it's spread over 3 different bookcases at this point.
