so today at drumline practice we found out what we were doing for the season, i got tenors since im the only one who can do it. all i wanted to know about was who was getting section leader. come to find out i dont get it but the other two juniors do (we have no seniors in our battery this year) i was so effing pissed off. i bust my butt making sure everybody has what they need, making sure our practice area is set up and cleaned up at the end of practice, and make sure everyone acts acceptably. but when they bring me in to talk to me they talk to me about maturity and crap (i will admit im not the most mature person but i am mr. responsible but fun) the two people they picked, well one has been doing it longer than i have but he has no balls and no one respects him or will actually listen, and the other is a b***h who thinks just cuz she has power can tell the world what to do and everyone has almost no respect for her as a section leader. needless to say i feel very betrayed by the instructors since they know what i do for this drumline and they go around and do this. i really feel like saying the hell with trying to hlep them cuz apparently they dont care anymore.

what do you guys think?

i know what you mean the same thing happened with me and another girl in my band. We were the best choices for drum majors but they didn't give it to us. they gave the position to to clarinet players with now back bone.

Hey! I hope you aren't implying that all of us have no back bone!

Me and another girl tried out for clarinet sl last year, and she got it. I was, and still am, prety pissed. yeah, she is a senior. But i did better in my audition(group auditions) and I actually want to be there, and actually care about my section. She was always complainging about not wanting to be in band, and then she is never around, and then is always ditching band class. Me and the other sophomore had to basically take over slship to make up for her never being around, though I don't think the bd eve noticed that we were better sls then she was. I mean, come on! She was always off with other sections, which, don't get me wrong, is not a bad thing, but I mean she was never with the clarinets. By the end of band camp, the freshman went to us sophomores for answers, even when she was only a few feet away.

And then, she makes up a lie about our whole section, inf ront of us, and then we go to sectionals and she goes up to my face and tells me I don't practice! (I'mprobably the person who practices most out of the whole band. I'm the only who actually carries my instrument around all day, so why would I do that if I wasn't going to go home and practice? And I've never seen her take her instrument home.) And then, she tells me i don't practice again before our first playoffs game, when we were setting drill. speaking of which, she completely reset the drill, which the people who had actually been at class for our class period had already been set in. I asked if she had an extra lyre, because we were allowed to have them because we had jsut gotten a new song about two days before, and she looks at me and says "you should have practiced and memorized it." WTF?! She didn't have it memorized either! (She still let me borrow a lyre, which is now mine, because she gave me her flipfolder and the lyre because I lost mine and she isn't continuing on in band for college, surprise surpirse>.>)

any way are they any good??? cuz if there not.....
let them screw up. its good to have a little (hopefully alot.. twisted ) of embarassment. then they should step down letting u be first again.

Well, you're a junior, right? There's always next year. If they suck this year, they probably won't be picked again. Just keeping helping people out like you are, and respect the current section leaders. Respecting someone that got the position you didn't get would also show more maturity which would bump you up, too, right? =D

Your female leader sounds like my section's opinion of me...

I hope your drumline leader(s?) are better than me and ours.
If they fail, don't let them get picked again next year, if your director has a democracy and not a democratic dictatorship like mine.

maybe it's that whole..."i'm better than them, i deserve to be section leader. wah wah wah" mentality that makes them think you're not cut out for the job smile i don't know, just a suggestion

Obviously they're not like that in real life. This is where people go to rant about stuff, so they DON'T act like it around everyone else.

The same thing happened to me in high school, my friend got picked as clarinet sl, mainly because she had been in band a year longer than me. So I was pretty pissed for a while, but I realized that it wasn't the end of the world, that I still had the respect of people in my section and the opportunity to help people out.

Oh, she also got point over me (we march a wedge formation for parades and a clarinet is always the point), but it's actually harder to march second rank than point anyway because you have to set the diagonal for the rest of the band. So whatever.

maybe so, but they still have the MENTALITY(that means that they think like that, if not act like that). people notice your mentality razz whether your act on it or not.

That's what happened to me last year when I was a junior. I busted my butt for 2 years in the baritone section and the sohpomore got section leader. (We didn't have seniors that year either.) He spends most of the hour making fun of our band director. Where is the justice? anyways, there's always next year. This year, I'm sec. leader @ my new school, and he got kicked out of band. It's all about karma. Trust me. Senior year will be THE year.

Build a bridge and get over it. There's always next year.

Is how it goes.
But hey, you're doing what you should be whether they notice or not and you'll probably have good karma later ;] Dont think too much on it.

Haha, in our drumline, the section leader was section leader the first year she was ever in band. She's a damn good mallet player and a really good leader, it's the first time I saw our percussion respect anyone lower than a senior or really at all lol.
