I'm not too sure what I should think about this whole new thing about steam punk coming out into the public eye.... Should I be happy to know that at one point or another that people will finally understand what it is that I love? Or is it that they will misunderstand the way they do with the Gothic fashion?
My mother has certainly been catching on tough. At one time she thought that it was strange~ but now that she is seeing more influence in stores and on television she believes that I am a trend setter and very original and artistic...
As far as the Victoria's Secret fashion show~ (who's topic I was going to post this before I realized that this would make a much better introduction topic) I have always been an individual whom finds inspiration in the many different ways that seams can be brought together to enhance and alter the appearance of one's body. As such I have watched the Victoria's Secret fashion shows for a while and always have been inspired by what I see.
Slowly ... very slowly, we are working our magic on the world. And, I believe that it is a good thing.

Getting recognition is never a bad thing, though some will always make fun of it no matter what.
I just know I'll weep the day I see brass painted plastic goggles available for 55 dollars at Hot Topic.

Aye, I pray that the mainstream doesn't rape such a beautifully crafted and sofisticated subculture. I mean it's been building up since jules vern wrote journey to the centre of the earth.
I'm hoping they take the environmental hint to go for cleaner energy as well.
And what is out there is tastful but not over the top....yet. Well at least in Australia, i still have to look in the army disposale store and make things from scratch, last resort is ebay.

Just stick with it, the fad with fade as with everything and you will still have your interest.
One have to stop caring when you deal with alternative cultures such as Steampunk/goth/punk/whatever and just do your own thing.

It's already begun. The rape, I mean.
Hot topic? Yeah, they're selling little Lolita-style hats, those fake plastic felt top hats, ruffled bustle skirts (too short to be modest, of course....damn steamsluts....) and I even saw a horribly made frock coat. It's rather disgusting. I don't want my culture being raped and pillaged by the mainstream. I guess it's like that punk explosion about six years ago. It'll fade within the year. And I guess in a way that's okay. We won't get as many weird looks.
Though I do admit, I like them, the looks. I mean, Gods forbid I'm original, right?

As I said above, if they start selling cheaply made imitation brass aviator goggles, then be mad, then vote with your dollar and don't shop there.

If I see mainstream stores selling "Steampunk" items I'll tell people to shoot me on site. They are. Tripp had an entire line of 'steampunk' clothing... and you know what we'll do? We'll laugh. We'll laugh at them, just like we laugh at the kiddies wearing "corsets" from hot topic instead of actual 400 steel grade streel spring boned corsets. We will continue to laugh when they wear their mass manufactured mini top hats instead of creating your own magnificent unique piece... no matter how much they try to make steampunk mainstream, it's really an impossible thing to do. Hot topic can't brass piston clockwork arm pieces custom made for you. They can't sell hand machined or hand painted goggles with adjustable lenses and lights. They can't sell en mass mechanical brass wings, that move when you open and close your arms and have moving clock work pieces. They will never be able to capture the most important aspect in the mainstream, and that is the craftsmen ship of the beautiful handmade unique pieces.

Why should it matter what the mainstream cretins do with Steampunk? Experience tells me that when they get their greasy clutches on it, theyll rape it as hard as they can. That is what North American material culture does: They make it material, so that they can reproduce and mass produced. But they can't take our originality and passion; these can be only poorly reproduced and is impossible to legitimately mass produce. The original will always be unique and real, even if it is ignored in favor of the generic.
This is not our culture, it belongs to everyone; even the shallow ones. Let them reduce it to materialism; that is what they do. Let us rise above them, keep our imaginations vibrant, the fire in our hearts despite their best efforts to reduce us; that is why we are punk.
