On Wings Of Song

On the way home from midstate auditions, me and my two friends were talking about how we could find eachother in the throng of people by the sound of our playing. Have any of you ever been able to recognize your friend's sound enough to be able to find them in a crowd of alike musicians?

i can always tell if it's my friend kyler playing trumpet, because his has the best tone in the section.

Yes. I usually have a beautiful tone, but sometimes I want to play with so much intensity (this is marching of course) that I turn my tone into a harsh, rough tone for volume. And I play louder than everyone else, usually.

A lot of our band kids have different tones. One of our baritones has an amzing tone, which is why he got the solo, and he is pretty findable. One of our trumpets is awesome, good sound without too much overplaying, and then the only one close tends to play finger bingo more often and has a lesser sound.

and then one of our freshman guy clarinets has terrible sound quality. Me and another guy were talking and he started tuning. We are like "who is that? Ew!" and then it stops and the kid appears from the tuning spot. "Oh, its just him." The fact that it was him completely changed our thoughts. At first we were thinking we needed to give them some kind of sense, but then when we saw it was him we ignored it.

I can usually tell if it's my friend Cassie playing, because her playing is always airy and she tries to take a breath after every note. I love her to death, though!

A friend of mine has somehow managed playing clarinet for over six years with her cheeks puffed out... xd So her tone is a bit airy, plus she plays on a really old clarinet that wasn't taken care of well, which doesn't help.

I can usually tell who's playing in different sections. Like, this freshman trumpet has a solid tone, and good range, but it's just a bit edgy, so I can tell him apart from the seniors. Our first chair trumpet sounds really good, too. Flutes...most of them have okay tone, but the freshman has really nice tone, and can actually play loudly! xd She just needs to be able to play the music and stuff.

Haha, well it was less of how airy they sounded, and more of just HOW they played. It's as if you're hearing the way someone looks through music, if you can understand that.

... It's like their is some hidden emotion inside of their playing that is familiar enough to recognize. Hearing them play is sort of like hearing your mother's voice. It's so familiar to you, that you can find it in the crowd.

Yeah, I can definitely do that. Two of my friends play the violin, and I can always tell them apart by their tone. One is always a tiny bit sharp, and the other plays really softly. And I can always tell my flutes apart by the way they blow. Wait...xD

All the time!

Everyone's tone is different.

I can always tell who is/isn't there when I hear/don't hear their tone.

I can always tell when our 1st 'net section leader is playing. Mainly because he's the loudest of the clarinets and can play the highest. (Everyone says I'm loud too, but you can't really tell when it's yourself...)

Even though you hate me, ironically Christmas eve I was listening to "Song without Words" recorded by Air Force's band, the flute part sounds JUST like your playing and was going to tell you. You should go listen, it's eerie.

On another note, our flutes play how they talk, which is good (and sometimes bad). Sound and Technique wise. It's trippy. If you ever get the chance to hear Kaiden or Robert play you should. I would more suggest Lindz, but you'll never get her to play by herself much less anywhere to play.

oh, playlist.com song without words. It'll just say holst, but that's the USAF recording.

I know you're not fond of horn, but if you go back and listen to it a second time, Im sure you'll appreciate the horn parts in it, it's really neat. We played it last year, definately a fav.
