Sartory should be a word. Clothing plays a vital role in the world of the occult, religion, the supernatural and what have you; ceremonial magicians have their robes, Goeticists have their Rings of Solomon, Pagans have their Hematite Necklaces and Copper Bracelets, Jews have their Phylacteries and Ministers have their collars. Suffice it to say, apparel is often considered significant within the world of many occultists, regardless of tradition. In that respect, I ask you: How important do you think clothes are - and, by extension, how important appearance is - when it comes to ritual or other occult work? Do you have particular garments or sets of clothes for ritual or other occult work? What about accessories, like rings, bracelets or the like? If so, what are they, and do they have any particular special functions or sentimental value to you? Is there a particular occult outfit you would love to possess/make/design/see? If so, what is it? Are there any items of clothing or particular sets of clothes you hate to see used in ritual or other occult work, but seem to pop up anyway?

As important as you make them. Some people enchant a certain set of clothing to aid in magical works, others just use it as a mental focus to get "in the mood", and other people could do a ritual in their work clothes for all they care. Of course, there are those people who insist on no clothes...

The only garment I have so far is a lightweight, purple hooded cloak that I have not been able to wear in a while. Most of my magical jewelry is usually charged with more pragmatic uses, too, so they're not just for ritual. (Not until I set aside a set, at least.) The cloak is supposed to be just a focus, though I will likely enchant it either for amplification or shielding at a later date (during the Olympics, perhaps?).
Is there a particular occult outfit you would love to possess/make/design/see? If so, what is it?
I admit it; I want a robe for magic. One I can put all sorts of symbols on, hand down to any magical children, look fancy at balls, etc. I'm not quite so much for the pointy-hat thing, though I have seem delightful ones.

I like robes, but a lot of the stereotypical ones have HUGE, billowy sleeves. Unless they're shortened, they are nothing but a safety hazard. They catch on things and on fire, knock things down, and can smudge a circle if you use something like sand or salt in yours. People still like wearing them, though... talk2hand That, and medallions that put a strain on your neck. Yes, occult garments should be magically purposeful, but they should also be comfortable, especially since rituals take TIME.

I tend to think of magical garb as just psychopomp in order to aid in the ritual and "getting in the mood" or as a trigger for raising energy.
I, personally, have a hooded cloak, but I may have used it *once* back when I was in my ceremonial magic phase. Currently I don't have any special clothes set aside for such things.

Yay@new threads (Edit: HA! Threads! Get it? Get it?)
That said, occultic apparel doesn't concern me too much, as it'd be weird to own a Robe or other similar such thing when I was at home, and even still in a dorm. It'd sure be nifty, though, and definitely can get someone in the mood for magic work, as Obscurus kind of already said. I don't really have to much else new to offer that the above two haven't covered, rather than I think in some cases a standard dress code for ritual ensures a ritual gathering won't look like a...regular gathering. Oh, plus that one time I came up with an enchantment for my gym clothes, does that count? I already posted in here on that "Realm of the Physical" thread I made a while back. So all sorts of clothes and objects can be infused with magical power, I think, but the ones with certain symbolism on them can do well to increase such aptitude for fusion, as well. Things like color correspondences, sigilized embroidery, etc.

I think its only as important as you make it.
I tend to wear different cloths to accomplish different things and thus they sort of adopt different characteristics. Like I might have a necklace I wear for comfort... or a ring to make sure people don't bother me. Like I have a ring which I wear on my ring finger to pretend I have a fiance... and even when I don't wear it on that finger I notice that I am bothered by people less etc.
Even when I am not wearing it "properly" it still in a way works. This tends to be alot of things. I just sort of adapt things near me to my purposes so my favorite things just get charged.
I think I would like to wear an outfit which is like a portable ritual site. I also would like to be able to hide an assassins blade or dagger up my sleeve. Pretty much... I would really like a coat which serves all my needs or dreamed up needs.
I can't stand the triangle hats. They are horrible. I also dislike wands... I mean anything can be a wand but I don't get the elaborate wands that people pay 100$ for. I don't get why people purchase all those expensive ritual stuff. I think anything can be used in a ritual. Just glue a rock on a stick!

I have a wonderful Chinese style robe, black, with embroidered gold on the sleeves and seams, and a stylized dragon on the back. I wear it for ultimate coolness or if I'd like to do something a little bit magical.
Whenever I visit my altar, I usually wear something with good knees, as I kneel before the trees and usually end up with a bit of mud and wet.
Other than that I collect weird clothes, I have a ren fair black wool cloak which is excellent, and pull together whatever I have/feel like at the time, and make it work. I'm pretty comfortable with chaotic circumstances

* How important do you think clothes are - and, by extension, how important appearance is - when it comes to ritual or other occult work?
Not necessarily important. The clothes only have as much power as you give them in your own mind. If you believe them to be a necessary part of ritual, then they are. If you don't, then they aren't.
* Do you have particular garments or sets of clothes for ritual or other occult work? What about accessories, like rings, bracelets or the like? If so, what are they, and do they have any particular special functions or sentimental value to you?
I usually go skyclad (or houseclad, really), if i feel like dressing (or in this case not dressing) in a special way. If not, I just put on something comfortable. Usually Pajama Bottoms.
* Is there a particular occult outfit you would love to possess/make/design/see? If so, what is it?
I've always wanted to have a full-on magician's robe, with bell sleeves (as impractical as they are) and everything. The kind of sleeves that you can store random things in. That, or a nice crushed velvet cloak.
* Are there any items of clothing or particular sets of clothes you hate to see used in ritual or other occult work, but seem to pop up anyway?
Me not really. I don't much concern myself with what people are wearing in their own rituals.

How important do you think clothes are - and, by extension, how important appearance is - when it comes to ritual or other occult work? I think it is another thing, like Obscurus said, that helps one get into the "magical mindset" and turn away from the mundane. I don't think appearance is very important. I have read that if one does wear a ritual garment that it should be simplistic. Personally, I go for the simplistic dramatic.
Do you have particular garments or sets of clothes for ritual or other occult work? What about accessories, like rings, bracelets or the like? If so, what are they, and do they have any particular special functions or sentimental value to you? I have started construction on a set of black Tau-Cross robes with a hood for magical workings. Usually though I wear a nine-knotted cord if I am just doing something simple. I wear the robe for more elaborate workings (evocations and such). I also have many pantacles that I can wear for specific workings (such as a square of mercury for spirit communication). My practice is a mixture of high and low magic, so it depends on the working at hand.
Is there a particular occult outfit you would love to possess/make/design/see? If so, what is it? A big, purple turban for divination work.
Mostly I would wear it for comical reasons, though.
I would love to have a leather mask for guising work. I saw some at a convention and I have always wanted to make one since then.
Are there any items of clothing or particular sets of clothes you hate to see used in ritual or other occult work, but seem to pop up anyway? Big flashy robes that distract the mind and dull the senses. Also, anything really that distracts the mind for magical work. I have seen at a convention people who (it was during the Spring Equinox if I remember correctly) that wore fairy wings and fairy everything for their ritual that day (I did not attend >>). Sickened me.

I subscribe mostly to the psychopomp idea, and usually just adapt whatever I have on hand, though I do try to pick things that seem like they'd already be a little closer to whatever than what else is available if I feel like it'd help/be necessary.
I tend to just wear what I usually wear, as I tend to pick whatever I'm comfortable with and then just forget about it. But I also figure things can be charged, or enchanted, atleast so to speak without any idea of how things actually work. I figure colour stuff can help too with the psychopomp idea.
I have a leather jacket that seems close to twice my age as my step-dad had it when he was a young magician, so to speak, and through out most of his adulthood before he got bogged down in the quagmires of life and ended up giving it to me on a birthday. It seems to be along the lines of a talisman when discussed with people. I suppose I’ve infused a few pieces of jewelry over the years, some not for myself, as well as just carried around stones until they disappeared.
I find I want an outfit on a whim, usually just for a singular scenario or set of circumstances mostly for the novelty, and so I have a long list of varying things that I’d have to spend a long time to get a small part of it down, mostly as I'd have to try to remember them.
What I dislike seeing varies as well on circumstances and my mood and such. Mostly I find I dislike something for aesthetic reasons. If it’s not impractical, or at least is worth-while/any problems to the person, then I don’t think I can really fault them, but my dislike fluxuates and usually I just don’t bother to focus on such things after I notice them.

You've got to have the feel of the clothing you wear if you're going to concentrate on a ritual. Clothing you wear also creates an image that you hold within yourself, if I wanted to practice something darker I would wear darker clothing. In the same effect if I wanted to feel more natural I would wear less. * Do you have particular garments or sets of clothes for ritual or other occult work? What about accessories, like rings, bracelets or the like? If so, what are they, and do they have any particular special functions or sentimental value to you?
I'm too broke to have clothes set aside for anything other then a special occasion, (you know, interviews and family gatherings. Most all my clothes are work clothes and they're meant to get dirty.
* Is there a particular occult outfit you would love to possess/make/design/see? If so, what is it?
I want a toga. A big tapestry that I can wrap up in toga style. I don't know why, just seems right. (in a perfect world I would have berkenstocks too)
* Are there any items of clothing or particular sets of clothes you hate to see used in ritual or other occult work, but seem to pop up anyway?
I've gotta say, I adore those velvety hooded robes. I'm also in love with long flowy gowns that you trip over or get caught in brambles. wink

I go with whatever feels right, but it's fun to look the part too. razz
I like flowy, soft, pretty material. Cloaks, robes, Halloween costumes, gothic dresses, or silken nightgowns. I like props and accessories, gemstones.. All of these things get me into the mood for magick work.
Someday I want to design my own costume to wear for rituals.. I am a bit of a fantasy fanatic, so it will probably be designed like something from Slayers. xD
Things I don't like to wear to rituals? Mundane, every day clothes.. Pants.. eck. I hate them any day of the week. Clothing items that are restrictive.. I don't pay much attention to what other people wear or don't wear for rituals. Should I? x.x
I don't mind if my clothes get dirty or if I get attacked by sticks and stuff. I can always just wash it, and the pain isn't permanent, so I can deal with it. x3 [If I plan on walking in a strange area, I make sure to wear shoes] The way I see it, clothes are made to be worn, and if they get destroyed in the process of being used for their purpose, it's okay because they were well worth the money paid for them.
