COUGH COUGH...Let's pretend we're all alive, shall we? I don't know about you guys, but there's something about Assassin's Creed II life that makes the course of human history seem truly magical. Larger-than-life personalities reach to us from beyond the past in the forms of leaders, inventors, even everyday people who were lucky enough to do something amazing and get noticed for it. Are there historical figures that have amazed you to the point where you wouldn't mind invoking them in your mind, to try and share in their strengths or triumphs? Any stories out there in the loom of humanity that you would re-enact in ritual to raise energies of determination and willpower?

How about just stories from history you really want to know more about, religion-related or otherwise?
I'll post mine in a bit if anyone responds.

I really like the story of Gautama Buddha's journey to enlightenment.

History makes me wonder though about how "great" prominent figures actually were. I think after so long people take on mythical properties that make them actually seem larger than life when they were just like you or I, flaws and all.

I'm really gay for the various events of the 1600s, primarily the Protestant Reformation (Because I think it'd make for an awesome Shadow Hearts game) and the Sengoku period (because holy s**t samurai are cool). Whimsical and flippant, perhaps, but there you go.

RE: Past Personalities, the ones that constantly grab my attention are Tesla, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Alexander the Great, and Carl Jung.

What do you think it is about time that does that sort of thing to historical figures, Obscurus? Do we project onto them the heroic qualities that we want to mimic or aspire to today, through the invention or misrepresentation of stories, as we've done with people like George Washington and his dear old cherry tree?

Mitsh, what about Alexander the Great and Toyotomi Hideyoshi grabs your attention the most? I don't know too much about either, except maybe a bit about the former that I learned in middle school.

I find the specific weaknesses of some historical characters endearing, adding humanity to them, and actually I find the biggest change of time is the adding of all figured involved in a specific endeavor or age to a specific "team" or association, where instead they might have judged each other, been indifferent, or even been enemies. The Founding Fathers is one large specific example of this, I would think, after all, we might find it absurd today to think of the "Political Movement of Clinton, Bush, and Obama" and yet by future standards they may end up grouped into a heroic trio, like some of the sword rivalries of the past have become.

I think it's because those people did something so great that even after they've been dead for thousands of years, we still remember them and what they gave to the world. It's immortality, and that's pretty damn mythic. I think that because of this all of their flaws are usually forgotten and they become an archetype for the type of thing they accomplished. For example, Gautama Buddha is an example of enlightenment and completion of the quest. Of breaking the chains of suffering.

Big fan of folks like Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson, and other environment-sensitives. But I'm a tree-hugger too, so go figure. whee

I think the most important stories, though, are those we would consider most mundane. The amazing triumphs of my own parents... and of any parents who are devoted to their children in perfect love and perfect trust... are far more immediately relevant to me than these so-called lofty figures. I really do idolize my parents and any other parents who have the muster to churn out amazing kids. The everyday heroism without which, none of these famous people would exist in the first place.

I think it's the larger-than-life aspect to them, and how dynamic they seemed. Hideyoshi began his career as the sandal-bearer, and became one of the most prominent figures in the Sengoku era. Alexander conquered s**t. I just have to wonder what it must have been like to know those people, or even to be those people. Josh's near constant enthusiasm for everything strikes me as being similar to what they might have been like.

Man, I get that desire all of the time. To know what those people were like, their daily mannerisms, and learn through that relationship how they were destined for greatness, or perhaps learning that such greatness was a combination of luck and determination.

Some stories I would love to know about from history include the relationship between Anthony and Cleopatra, if there really was such a one. I also wouldn't mind knowing a bit more indepth about certain political leaders and dictators from other countries, such as Presidents like TR and FDR and figures such as Mao Zedong, Francois Duvalier and Joseph Stalin. The film "The Last King of Scotland" portrays the very sort of mind that it takes to rule with an iron fist.

Anyone ever wonder what might have been before human history? Like perhaps a pre-human, human history. Before all the egyptians, sumarians, mayans, and whatnot. I always like to think humans were once far superior in knowledge than we are now, something just happened, and we lost all the knowledge. Or perhaps, some people do know, and they're not letting us know?

I've turned into a conspiracy theorist x.x

I usually wonder if people really if ever change. I wonder if reincarnation does happen would they even be recognized now.

I think more important then the people is the idea's they represented. I feel inspired when I hear of a really good rout or some of the great generals that have existed.
It reminds me of the rush I feel when I get a really good idea. I like hearing the words of religious leaders because I can feel this resonance within me. An echo that almost screams Yes That makes sense. When I hear poetry... its like the thoughts reach me. Thats why I like studying history.
It inspires within me the same qualities they had because I can recognize in some other the good... and I am reminded of the good in myself.

I don't know what they are like... whether portrayals were accurate, but words call to me

I wonder about the same kind of things. And I'm a conspiracy theorist too.

Rachel Carson wrote "Silent Spring," a very interesting account of the effects of DDT (a pesticide used in the 40s and 50s). A good, but difficult read.

Anyway, I may have mentioned this before, but I've always been interested in the effects of charisma. Hitler may have struck fear in the hearts of many Europeans, but he also captivated many with his speeches and propaganda.

I don't know why I'm fascinated by this. I swear I'm not a Nazi.

Thanks for the explanation, Dras.

Wait, DRAS? Holy s**t it's like everybody's coming back and we can all be one big happy family again until people dump out of OWO '09~!!!1 Also, I'm going to need more sufficient proof of this non-Aryan quality of yours than a mere statement of denial.

Could be that Hitler actually had occult power that extends to his words even today... ninja
