I have a question specifically for any witches out there: Do you use magick/do spells and, if so, do the results tend to be positive, negative, or non-existent? If you're not a witch, then I suppose my question is this: If you pray sincerely for something, do you usually get your wish or not necessarily? Do you view spells/prayer more as a tool to change something around you or as a means to drawing closer to your deity/deities?

I'm more just asking about personal experiences, but if there're any books or articles you've read about spells or prayer, please tell.

Edit: By spells, I just mean any sort of witchcraft in general. Sorry, bad phrasing.

Magic/spells are done to effect change (or make something happen). While it can involve deities, it doesn't have to and isn't something that one would normally do to bring oneself closer to deity. Prayer can also be used to effect change, but would be a primary way of forming a better relationship with deity.

Rituals (which can have spellwork as a component, but aren't necessarily magical in and of themselves) can help bring one closer to deity, just depends on the ritual.

I don't get involved with the whole magick and spells ordeal. I am a devout LDS. I pray to my Heavenly Father quite frequently. My prayers are answered all the time, some times not in the way I want, and not always instantaneously. It requires paitence and faith.

From what I understand of practical magic"k", it's a sham. It alters things like "luck" or "protection", things that are impossible to prove. It's a placebo. However, most spells are more like prayers than a level 3 fireball.

I’ll erase this feeling…

Magick and Magic are two separate things. Magick is Ceremonial Magic, which is often used in the practices of Thelema. Magic is used in rituals by other pagans.
I’m missing the feeling…
so this pain is also welcomed!

prayer eg: Heavenly father i ask you to.............
spell eg: i call upon the elements and the mother and father to.....
prayer: give me strength to................
spell eg: *lights candel visualises stuff*...........

my point is there is no limit to what both can do and you can also do both and it is all up to the person to choose what they feel comftorble with.

(these are generallised examples don't kill me)

(lol level 3 fireball)

Prayer all the way.

It just seems a bit more to try to affect change in a supernatural way by going through a being that is infinitely knowledgeable and wise (in comparison to our own limitations in that department), through prayer and humility (and yes this is limited to the boundaries of my own religious convictions).

This all changes depending on the religious perspective you're coming from like for example if the magic we're talking about isn't based in the supernatural and is instead a natural cause used to create a desired effect.

There's also reflective prayer and meditative prayer but I take it we're only talking about the one form used as a request for one thing or another?

I practice witchcraft.

As for spellwork, I'm not really accustomed to it and I've only done it once. I had positive results. But I'm thinking that it was a coincidence, since, looking back, I hadn't raised or sent off any energy, to my knowledge.

I was kind of hoping that my high priest would give me some instruction on how to properly execute a spell. Not quite there yet.

I usually implement other practices within witchcraft, like meditation and trance. I try to pray constantly, keeping a running dialogue with the Divine, so that I am in conscious contact even when I cannot sit down to meditate or trance out.

I do not view magic or spellwork as a physical type of prayer, like some pagans will say. It is the direct manipulation of energy, whereas prayer is indirect and relies on the talent of the deity, not on yourself.

I mainly do gem magic. This consists of cleansing the gems and giving them a certain job, so to speak. I have cleaned and assigned a few gems in the past month and they are doing well. My mom, however, will not participate with an expiriment. I cleansed her opal, which was tainted with bad luck, and assigned it to love, luck and prosperity. She is very intimidated by this opal and won't put it back on... But my amythests have helped me sleep and I have a large cat's eyes that I use for grounding and they are very helpful.

The results are the same as prayer. In time the spell will resolve, and we need faith to wait that long. The difference between the two is how you go about the change. For calm/eased changes I would use a simple prayer. Prayer is asking for change, in this sense it is simpler with no components and more "if the gods will it". A spell is almost the exact opposite. For forced/abrupt changes I would use a spell. These are commands made to the gods demanding a change be made in your world. This is your will taking the forefront of importance. Putting a stopper on a terminal illness would like this. The problem being is the need/want for components. Tools are used in spells (however our fingers and body parts may be tools as well in this act). The tools are typically what determines a spell from a prayer, but none the less, they help focus the want and send it into the world.

Don't let me solidify in your mind a spell is only for commands and a prayer is only used to ask for change. Prayer is often used interchangeably, but a spell is not lessened by this. Oh, god, not I have to explain myself. sweatdrop

Spells do not dishonor the gods by directly making commands, it is just some feel this is a necessary step in bringing about change. It all comes down to preference.

I myself tend to use more prayer than spells because spells have a time and place, and prayer can be done wherever. But I do enjoy a good elaborate spell time and time again.

I've found that the intent of the spell is more important than the words you say or the props you use. The simplest spells, like mental prayers, work best for me.

I used to be a witch and now im a buhdist mixed with a bunch of other stuff. When i was doing the witchcraft thing I found out that everything i tended to do had negative concequences and now when i pray things dont always get better but I find it does help and sometimes things do happen. Like my mom and I where driving into town and we had run out of gas and when i siad we would get there because i have faith in god and I just knew and when i told her i did the gas gadge when up and we made it into town. I believe a lot of different things but I have always had faith in god...or nirvana...or the goddess I believe they are all one and the same. So to sum all this up, I believe spells and magic bring about bad consequences and prayer leads to good!

Yes I do spells, and the results have been positive for the most part, though a scant few have had no result
When I pray I usually get what I am hoping for.
For me there is a difference between what a spell is and what prayer is, and I do practice both. I view spells as a way of drawing on my personal energy to manifest a change, I view prayer as a means of drawing me closer to the divine.
