When Kisikusiku was a cub she drifted, now she began to sneak. When she was a cub she flew from here to there like a wily june bug, now she began define herself.

Today she did something she knew would make the gods proud. She felt so proud of herself that she was going around showing everyone in the clan and soaking up their praise like a sponge. A shikar-i’s chaste was not to be exalted and admired. Her mother taught her that. Her family was probably not proud of her rank but today they were proud of her accomplishment. That mattered more.

The baby monkey she carried in her mouth, its paws dragging on the ground, seemed heavier by the second. She could hear herself breathing for the effort it took to carry. There was still one more person she wanted to show. As she approached the spot where Koi said her aunt would be Kissy dropped the carcass on the ground and looked around. “Aunt Aekea!”

Orange ears flicked as she shuffled just a bit inside of her den. No one had been home when she went to say her goodbyes today, but she had until tomorrow. Why rush them? She was leaving the pride with a very nice male she met earlier in the week, always telling him to come back. It was so hard to leave, honestly. Despite her opinions, her family was here and she loved them. Mother and Father were wonderful to her, she was helping train Kim'acha...

But she hated the segregation. It wasn't right. Her dark cousins were so beautiful to her, and to separate them into a low rank was something she wasn't happy about. Aekea didn't want to treat them differently, but she had to. It was expected of her. Those ways were forcing her to leave to a pride that practiced equality between males, females, and colors.

Her name interrupted her thoughts and Aekea blinked. Which one was that? Obviously a niece, but which one? A smile was put on for show as she stepped out of the den, blinking in the sun. Oh, it was little Kisi! Wonderful. And what was that? A monkey?

"Y-y-you c-caught a m-monkey?" She asked, attempting to pull in her stuttering. Aekea could remember when she'd caught her first monkey. It was when she was around Kisi's age, if not a bit older. Aekea didn't have to learn now to hunt until now. "V-very well d-d-done!"

“Thank you, auntie!” Kissy beamed, showing her big smile.

Aekea’s stutter never bothered her. Kissy always saw the best in other females, while her low opinion of males continued to slide. Even her brothers were beginning to taste her silver tongue. Soon they would be forced out of the den to live with the rest of the pride’s males. Knowing she would have to say goodbye had driven her to detachment. They were leaving, just like her father, but at least they would stay in the pride, she hoped.

Looking upon the dark female, Aekea smiled. She was glad that her family didn't seem to mind her stutter, even if some of the other pride members did. Hey, she was working on it, alright?! Her tail flicked this way and that as she examined her niece and then grinned a bit more, motioning Kissy to follow her. "Y-y-you can-n l-l-leave the m-monkey. M-m-my d-d-dad will get-t-t it-t."

She sighed as she spoke and moved a bit away from her den. She had something she needed to discuss with her dark family member. Something Aekea hadn't even discussed with her mother or father yet.

Kissy cocked her head. “Is something wrong, auntie?”

Aekea had been acting strange lately. Kissy spent a lot of time wandering around her clan, meeting everyone and getting acquainted with her family, and she wasn’t the only one who had noticed.

Something wrong? She could say that... With a sigh, Aekea looked to her little niece and nodded a bit, biting down on her cheeks on the inside. "I-I'm l-l-leaving the p-pride. I d-d-don't.... l-like how... t-the m-males are t-t-t-treated and t-that.... everyone is-s-s segregated-d." She manged slowly. She wanted a reign on her stuttering, but it got the better of her every single time.

Her opinions were that males should be every bit as important as females; they should help out a lot more than what they were allowed. She hated how, even some females, they were restricted to a small number of things they were 'allowed' to do. It just didn't fit right with her. So she'd be leaving

Kissy stepped back, eyes widened in horror. Despite her effort to stay strong tears started to well up in her eyes. “B-but you can’t! If you leave you’ll never be able to come back! We’ll never see you again!”

She couldn’t understand why her aunt would want to leave. The males were treated differently here, but not for no reason. They were spiritually impure because of the sins of their ancestors. No one treated them cruelly, they simply had their place like everyone else and just like everyone else they could raise their rank in the next life, if they lived right and proved their worthiness to the gods. That was fair.

"I-I nah-know, Keh, Kissy.." She said, trying to soothe her niece so she wouldn't make her cry. Aekea was an easier crier. Fair or not, she didn't like the way the pride was run. That male had told her of another pride where everyone was equal, despite color and sex. Something like that just struck a cord in her; it called to her to come be a part of it. She gave her niece a sad smile.

"B-b-besides.. it's-s better th-than getting k-kicked out-t. It-t w-would eventually hah-happen." It was true. If the others found out how she felt, she'd be forced to leave. So, leaving on her own gave her some dignity left. "I m-met someone... h-he said in-n his p-p-pride everyone is-s equal."

“That’s not true!” Kissy shook her head furiously. “You’re just like everyone else. You’re a good lioness.”

She couldn’t imagine anyone in her family breaking the rules. Many members of her family had low ranks but they always did the best they could, something Kissy found honorable.

Then Aekea mentioned she’d met someone. For the first time in her life, Kissy didn’t know what to say. Aekea was just giving up on them? Was this new friend better than her family? She backed away slowly, staring at Aekea as if she were a stranger.

Her brows furrowed together and tears threatened to break free as she watched her niece look at her like a complete stranger. She saw the hurt in Kissy's eyes, and Aekea didn't like seeing that. She turned her head to the side and sniffled a bit. What could she do? Kissy would hate her when she left; she had a feeling. But she didn't fit in this pride very well, despite what her family might say.

"I-I've... t-tr-tried s-so hard-d, K-K-Kissy...." her stuttering was worse because she was crying now. It was apparent in her voice, in the way she shook when she breathed in. Looking back to her dark niece, her face fell again. "I-I...I love y-y-you... and-d e-everyone-n. Buh.. but.." She didn't know how to finish it.

Kissy opened her mouth but no words came out. She felt betrayed, yet her aunt’s tears called out to her to help, for she hated to see members of her family cry. Her mother cried when their father left. Her brother cried, too. She tried to comfort them both. At that moment she realized the difference between her mother and Aekea. Mawu cried because her parastar left her all alone. Aekea cried because she was leaving soon, but that was the path she had chosen for herself, and realizing that, Kissy’s heart began to harden. She growled silently, sniffing back her tears as her fur began to bristle. She snapped, “So just go already! I don’t want you here anymore!”

Aekea's ears flicked back at her nieces hate filled words and her tail tucked btween her legs. Now th girl didn't want her here just because she was... Damn it all. This wasn't working the way she wanted it too. Instead of arguing with the younger, Aekea nodded, tears streaming faster and harder than before and turned the other way. She'd find somone else to say goodbye too. Maybe her mother would understand better. Doubts crawled up in her mind. She would be the bad daughter. But Betta left without a word, why should she be punished by her family for it?

When Aekea said no more Kissy spun around, grabbing her prize monkey by the neck as she ran back to her mother’s den, its limp body beating the dirt as she ran. She simply couldn’t stand to take another look at her aunt.

The day started out so perfectly. Now someone else she loved was leaving. A sick feeling twisted her stomach as she ran. What if Kim decided to leave too, or one of her other sisters? Dirt caught in the tears streaming down her cheeks. Her chest started to hurt from running and sobbing. She just wanted to go home and curl up with her mother’s reassuring warmth until these awful feelings went away. She needed someone to tell her everything would be okay.
