I've never had a religoin, and i've never needed it. My parents teach me wat's right and wat's wrong.
religion has some good qualities to it:
1) sense of fulfillment
uhhhh... taht's all I can think of now...

bad qualities:
1)holy wars.
2) some fundamentalist religions teach hatred of other religions

anybody want to add to either list?

Religions provide answers for unanswered questions, and as such, they prevent people from seeking what the true answers might be.

Religions aren't really necessary for a feeling of fulfillment, because what is really sought is a feeling of purpose/meaning. This purpose could be... doing something important in the physical world, seeking answers to important questions, etc.

Religion gives you the answers you are searching for and it gives people a sense of contentment: they think they know where they are, and where they're going.

Obviously, this isn't for all people. Some people don't feel a need for religion, and dislike the constraints.

I thought of another - for religion: ppl often discriminate against religions that aren't thier own. example: the holocaust, conflict btween Sunnis and Shiites, Conflict btween jews & muslims in middle east, the crusades...etc....
seems that nobody wants to defend religion

Religion does provide people with a moral compass, without having to think one up for yourself.

It provides a sense of community.

They routinly organise charity events.

They have benefits, but mostly they are just the easy path.

ok...right I belive that religion is there for those of us who need guidance and rules too live by, or else life is too open and horizons are too broad..I mean every religion has rules and strong religious people live by them, if they didnt have them they would be lost...religions have their own beliefs on death, and death happens too everyone (obviousley!!) and they need something too belive because nobody knows what happens..
basically religion is for those who are scared too figure out the truth..and that need guidance...Not that Im dissing ANY religious people anywhere because although I dont agree, I respect your beliefs

There is no way to prove that you're not immortal, besides dying. Oh, sure, it looks like everybody dies, but maybe you're special. xp

It is a source of strength and happiness in this world of hate caused by religion.

There is nothing worthwhile that a religion can provide that a secular lifestyle cannot.

The truth is that there is no point to anything. Without objective good or evil, or any sense of purpose, we are free from guilt. This is the way things are. Pretending that good and evil are real, and that we have a purpose, is no less a waste of time. Pretending there is a point to it all does not make a point to it all.

Ultimately, we are going to do as we please, be it some irrational idea of 'good' or merely something that we want.

The difference is that if you're trying to do good and good doesn't exist, you'll be none the happier. Getting what you want does make you happy. So people would be happier if they stopped listening to what they are being told they should be doing, and started changing the world to the way they want; be it a world of love and compassion, or a world in which you have a large store of personal wealth.

Conceptions of what is good & what is evil vary from person to person. Add to this free will and there is a prime reason for why religions were "created" & have been sustained to this day; to build restrictions within which everyone of a particular faith can successfully live together.

I have so far seen no proof from any religious text / view or argument that the earth was in fact created in 6 days & God had a bit of a rest on the 7th. Or that 2 of every species of animal plus a couple of people travelled for 40 days & nights on a wooden ship while the world & all it's other inhabitants slowly drowned.

In my eyes many of the stories like this can be likened to educational lessons.

i.e.: "Jimmy, if you act like a silly t**t, God will drown you" and "Polly, if you stick your finger in a socket you’ll be electrocuted & die."

[Most] religions try to restrict people from killing each other, sleeping with their next door neighbours husbands / wives, stealing & being rude to their parents. Quite obviously they have in cases had adverse effects stemming from divisions within religions & the subsequent wars & deaths that have ensued but I don't think the original intention of religion as a concept was to do this. I'm not sure exactly how, but I reckon they were created to control & provide a code by which people were expected to live their lives by.

The point of this post? Good quality of religions: Some people need restrictions. Take them away & hoshit, they have to think for themselves O:

Oh, & sorry if I rambled & that I'm not a member of this Guild yet posted D:

We have an educational and legal system. We don't need religion to force people to act according to our own unjustified will. We can program people more efficiently in a secular manner.

Rehabilition = programming
Socialising = programming

Successful societies are ones in which the programming of children and miscreants goes on, supported by a programmed society. Successful societies survive, unsuccessful ones die out.

The best you can hope to do is remove any programming that you don't like, and put in programming you do like. In a quasi-democratic society (like our own, assuming you live in the western world), this can be done by either influencing society, or by being a politician and lying to the people to get into power.
