Huffing, coughing, Lorelei dragged herself through the river and crawled onto the opposite bank, her fur soaking in water and blood. Once on the other side dizziness took her once more. Staggering she sat down on the side of the river to catch her breath and momentarily relieve the pain searing down her back.

She felt like a fool. How could she just lie there while that b***h ripped her apart? Even though she was too weak to escape his clutches when Soro attacked her she still bit back. She dug her claws into the mud, hissing, "Never again."

This was the second time she allowed another female to take advantage of her. The first time it was her lover but this time it was a female she barely knew and didn't even like. Maybe the instincts of motherhood were already taking hold. Her natural desire to protect and nuture must have kept her from fighting back. Much as she hated Soro, she couldn't fight the instincts of her sex.

For a moment she dared to hope that big male had been the end of Soro. She left in too much of a hurry to see how it ended. If he was dead perhaps she could muster the resolve to bring her children up with a kind paw, the way she brought up her first litter.

You know what they say. Hope in one hand and s**t in the other, see which one gets filled first.

Lore was about to have her question answered - quickly. Soro was moving through the river, the cold water stinging and numbing his tore flank and wounds as he swam across. It seemed Lore hadn’t managed to get far, and he could smell her blood in the air. It disgusted him. HE was the only one to put her in such a state, and he only did so to correct her unfavorable behavior. Right now, he had plenty of corrections to give her. He didn’t need to have her looking in such a state. Others would think he was not protecting her as he should and being a weak male. How could she put him in such a position?! And worse yet, he angered a god and had to leave a woman behind that he otherwise wanted to kill. The hate he had that could not be used against the god and the rogue female was directed at Lore, who laid wet and bleeding on the bank.

On the other side, he pushed up and let the pink water roll off his fur. A growl was already rolling in his throat as he turned and set his narrow red eye on her. “How could you? Why did you not PROTECT YOURSELF?” He batted her across the face, leaving a nice scar on her cheek. “You should have roared! Called out! I have seen you fight. Why did you do NOTHING?!” He turned and hit her side, extending his claws that had yet to be satisfied with blood.

And then you run off with your tail between your legs – Just like EVERY woman! Off to protect your OWN hide when I’m trying to protect you! How UNGRATEFUL! After everything I had done for you.

“Stop it!” Lorelei bellowed. She swung for Soro’s face, claws extended, but missed by a breath, too beaten down and blinded by her emotions to land a blow.

“This isn’t about you, Soro! I’m pregnant with your cubs! They're the ones I'm protecting.”

The creases of her face filled with blood and tears.

His paw stopped in mid-swing, frozen in the air as he looked at her with wide eyes and an open mouth. “Pregnant?” He wanted to ask how, but he knew. He didn’t take prizes like Lore without using them for what he felt females were best used for. He knew, with recollections of growling nights in the den he forced her to live in, how this occurred. He just never expected the consequences. No, he never expected to be around a female long enough to see the consequences. There was no way he could thinking anything other than the shock that he would be a father.

His raised paw went down to rest, and he looked at Lorelei as if she was some new creature he didn’t know what to do with. The very fact she had a piece of him in her changed her value, and even more, the fact she had children. He didn’t know if he should be happy or sick. He would have children, male heirs, but he didn’t like the idea of being a parent. Memories of his came to mind, and he didn’t want to become a repeated failure. No. He wouldn’t be. He would look after these children. They were his, property just as much as Lorelei was. That was until he saw what she produced. He’d decide upon their birth if it was worth keeping them.

Let…Let us hope they are all males then, for your sake.” It was Lore’s responsibility to ensure he had males. She was the mother after all.

Seeing as she had his children, he took her in, his anger seeping out as he watched her cry and bleed on the bank. It was quite out aside from her cries. “Come on now. Move back to the den. He went over, pushing her to get up on her feet and drag herself the short distance to their cave. Reluctantly, he went alongside her and slid his body under hers so she could half rest and half walk the way, not having to use what little energy she had on walking. He could not have her bleeding and wet outside when night fell. “You better not be lying to me. If you are bluffing, you’re dead.

“Shut up,” Lorelei hissed, pulling away from him. “I don’t want your help. It’s your fault this happened.”

She stumbled ahead on her own, limping, sometimes wandering off course, but never falling down. If only it was a lie. Lorelei knew the signs of pregnancy, her grandmother a midwife and her mother a healer, like her, who was the first to explain the stirrings of new life when she was an adolescent. Her family was full of intelligent, intuitive females. Antianeria was supposed to be a place where her intelligence could thrive. Instead, Kiuma’s pride was slowly twisting into a hell on earth. She choked on her breath, another tear slipping down her cheek to mingle with blood.

Soro growled at her, moving up to be alongside her as she limped, moved and swayed as she headed to their den. “Do not get cocky, dearest. I have seen cripples bear cubs. Breaking a limb or blinding a eye would still leave you up to bearing children, and if you continue being so sharp with me, I’ll make sure I take your eyes out so that you never lay eyes on your cubs or any cubs in the future ever again. You’ll be worthless as a herbalist without your sight to look at the problems.” It was a threat that he wanted to give. He didn’t want Lore to get any ideas and use his children as a way to make her powerful in being protected.

And I did not offer my help. I protected you. You’re mine, and you got yourself nearly killed on your own. Do not forget that.” He growled, ears back as he walked alongside her.

Lorelei snarled wordlessly. She felt like a prisoner in her own body. If she could only force sterilization upon herself. Even if the offer came from one of those accursed gods she would take it at this moment. Only by making her pregnant could a male truly make her his slave. Slave to bare and raise his offspring, no matter how much she hated him and his accursed spawn.

For the first time in months Lorelei missed her husband. At least he had treated her with respect, though she had no more authority over him than she did over Soro. He would never allow a male to speak to her the way Soro did. She never loved him but thanks to Soro she finally understood how lucky she was to find a male who saw more in her than a tool for making cubs.

When Soro’s den appeared close ahead her stomach heaved. For a moment she thought she would vomit. Damn Soro and damn all males! Damn the lions that killed Kiuma and damn Hippy for leaving them! Damn every idle paw that allowed this bullshit! Lorelei released her anguish with a roar.

His eyes widened to the sound, and a smile pulled larger, larger, larger still at the roar. Lorelei was cracking, cracked, breaking to the point of frustration. She was heavy with HIS children, had no place to go, obligated to her pride and it’s sick and weak, and she was here to be under him in this world. She was in pain, and the sound of the lioness roaring out to no one, just to roar, that sound that even words could not expressed, made Soro’s heart flutter. It was BEAUTIFUL, and for once, he found Lorelei more attractive than he had ever seen her. She was a broken lioness, and HE did this to her.

The pain in her body and the pain to come was something he lapped up greedily, hungry for the sound again, and taking great pride in having it produced. Not fighting, not tearing into her body, not bringing her down again and again had done this much to her, and he found a new way to break a lioness. Making them bear HIS young. They not only hated him, but they hated themselves.

It was GLORIOUS!

A large laugh shot through him and he broke into manic laughter. “Yes. Yes! AGAIN!” His body shook with the high he got and he moved ahead, heading to their den, letting the sound of her roar ring in his ears as the loveliest music he had ever heard. He wanted to hear it again. Over and Over. He wanted to hear her roar like that again!

Paying no heed to Soro's command Lorelei let loose a second roar. In her voice were the cries of mothers for their young, the ravenous baying of hyenas, the oppressive roars of the males and Kiuma's mournful dirge with which her voice crumbled into nothing. With her roar she let go of almost everything. Now her legs felt soft like mud, but she did not fall. She did not look at Soro again. When they entered the den she found a place to lie down and simply closed her eyes in hate. There was nothing more she could do.

As Lore went to her side of the den, flopping into a silent heap, Soro laid out upon his mound of bones and smiled at her, all of his teeth displayed wide as his eyes glinted, taking in the dark shadows playing on his prize. It was only when he was about to call her ‘mother’ did he stop, his face dropping at this new revelation. As mate to him, she was a mother, and a wave of associations to his own crawled up his spine like a cold tongue. He shivered, and looked at the female with a disturbing intensity. Oh, she was broken, but that did not mean she would do something to his children. He wouldn’t allow it, and knew he had to be sure of it. Mothers and Females were cruel indeed.

Pulling off his mask, he settled to sleep, again returning with fresh scars. He was getting in more and more trouble with this female.

You have a lovely voice, Lore. You should cry out more often.” He snickered, his laugh bouncing in the cave. “Let’s hope our kids inherit it.” Laughing at the thought.

He was tired, and as he closed his eyes, he let himself grin. It seemed he would be a Daddy now.
