Character: Princess Salacia Neptunus
Story: Leviathan Dreams

User ImageThe writer

Name: Gloria McDonald

Age: 75

Gender: Female

Physical description: Gloria looks like a typical grandmother, but that may be because she is one! She's short, never having reached above 5'1", and is thick all over. She's a woman who has given birth to multiple children and successfully survived menopause. She has broad hips, a big bust, and a wide, full-cheeked face. Her expression is usually a cheerful one and like most grandmothers, she has an out of style, upswept mass of hair. The length of her white hair exceeds what her beehive style makes it appear to be. Gloria wears slightly frumpy and out of date dresses (or jogging suits) and fuzzy slippers, sandals, or orthopedic sneakers. She always has twinkle in her blue eyes and wears a pair of reading glasses which she hasn't changed since the 50's.

Personality: Gloria is the most giving and loving woman you could ever meet. In fact she is so giving, so loving and so trusting that she has found herself being taken advantage of her whole life. It's not that anything horrible has ever happened to her, just that she's never really done anything for herself. Gloria is every inch a mother figure. She will can and will mend your clothes, make you a meal or just be an ear for your sad tales. She does not have a dominating personality and almost no temper to speak of. Gloria would rather back down than have anything turn into an argument. She has a slight difficulty with modern technology (she took a computer class at the senior center once... but conveniently managed to master TiVo). A lot of modern ideas continue to elude her (gay marriage? huh?). Gloria tries to keep an open mind but there are only so many new tricks that this old dog is willing to learn.

History/background: Gloria has lived a very fulfilling and somewhat uneventful life. She grew up as an averagely attractive young woman and married an averagely attractive man named Jim McDonald. He was a union man and she was a housewife. They lived a morally sound Irish Catholic life together. They had 3 children (Jim Jr, Mary Anne and Tom), raised and sent them to college, and saw them marry and have their own children. Gloria was everything her husband could want and they loved each other very much. She always had dinner on the table when he got home from work, she always had his slippers waiting for him, and always put his blanket on him when he fell asleep on the couch with his arm around her shoulders. It wasn't a burden he put upon her. It was just her. They always gave each other what the other wanted: love and security. Gloria put aside all of her small ambitions in exchange for this secure and wonderful life. Gloria was at Jim's side until the very last day. He died of lung cancer in 1998.

It's been a decade since Jim's death and Gloria has spent her time frugally living off of the comfortable pension and life insurance that her husband left her. Their house had been long paid off so her only expenses are utilities, food and the home shopping network. Gloria's life long dream has been to write an adventure-romance to fulfill all the fantasies of intrigue, passion and adventure that she has never experienced herself.

Why they applied: Writing is something that she always put to the side as she cared for her husband and raised her children. It is also something she hadn't the heart for in her mourning years following Jim’s death. Gloria told her family that she was applying for this workshop to aid her writing ambitions. Her children have all wished her luck but none of them truly realize how serious their mother has always been about this particular story. Gloria has been scribbling pieces of her novel on napkins, food packages (while cooking dinner) and on post-its for years. With such a busy life and so many children (and grandchildren!) she has collected a box full of these notes over time. Only now, in the autumn of her life, has she begun to finally piece these scraps together. She is very eager to complete her epic tale in a more definite, less scattered form. Even if she never gets published, Gloria is eager for assistance from a famous writer (she's read ALL of his books!) and to see her life's fantasy take shape. For Gloria, the bottom line is also to do something for herself, finally, in as unselfish a way possible.

The character

Name: Princess Salacia Neptunus ( Sally )

Age: 100

Gender: Female

Species Mermaid

Physical description: Princess Salacia is curvy and beautiful, everything you would imagine of a mermaid princess. She has flowing blonde hair and large innocent eyes the color of the stormy seas: grey when she's angry and brilliant blue when content. Her upper body is that of a slim yet busty woman clad in as little clothing as possible. From the waist down her scaled fish tail flashes with the varied colors of a rainbowfish. She often adorns herself with golden jewelry but not much else. The sun tanned skin on her 'human' half is in fact more like a scale/skin hybrid. At first glance she looks perfectly normal but when you look close, her skin glistens and is, in fact, a fine covering of flesh-toned scales.

Personality: Salacia is still considered young amongst her long-lived people and is generally outgoing, energetic and rebellious if not a little selfish and spoiled. She is expected to rule her kingdom some day but prefers to be continually courted by attractive young men and to rebel against her royal parents. She is as opposite to Gloria as possible (almost exaggeratedly so). She is impulsive, selfish, spoiled, gorgeous, and stupidly brave. She never takes the 'safe' path if only for the fun and adventure which may ensue. She has also never known true love.

Sally (as she prefers to be called) often goes out of her way to get herself into trouble or does purposely dangerous things to get a reputation amongst the people of Neptunus. She doesn't seem to realize when she's putting herself in danger and blows off all mention of her taking her seat as the future leader of her kingdom. She loves boys and dates many, and often. Even so, she is chaste and fickle when things get serious with any particular guy. Sally is not all fun and games though. Behind her shallow façade is an intelligent woman just waiting to be pushed to the surface. It seems that in her youthful delights she just ignores her better judgement. At any sign of true danger Salacia shows the quick wits and intelligence granted to her through her distinguished and wise royal family. Anyone who knows Sally well knows that she shows a lot of promise as a future Queen. She just needs the perfect opportunity to mature and show everyone her promise, including herself.

History/Background: Princess Salacia Neptunus is the only daughter of the King and Queen of the mermaid kingdom that bears their name, Neptunus. Their family has ruled for generations and are known for their fair rulings in domestic and foreign matters. The royal family possesses unique magick (in the form of an amulet) which allows them to assume the form of land walkers (their fins can transform into legs) though their scaled skin cannot be hidden. This magick is kept a strict secret by the royal family and their citizens and closest advisors are not aware of it’s existence. They come from a beautiful city, half above and half below water. This aids in their dealings with the land dwellers.

The Neptunian people are very cultured and do not renounce those who live on land like other mermaid kingdoms do. Their mermaid brethren, in fact, find this particular kingdom to be odd and believe that Neptunus only puts itself in great danger. The citizens of Neptunus are wise, magical and long lived (at least 50 years longer than other species of mermaid). They trade knowledge and particular magicks with the surface dwellers if only to further their own personal experiences. They believe that this working relationship is what has kept their kingdom alive longer and allowed them to thrive much better than other sea races.

Sally is finally turning 100, the mermaid equivalent of becoming an adult (about 21 human years), and a large party is being thrown in her honor. Sally wants everything to be perfect and in her version of this perfect party is included her own signature prank. Of course her family is expecting as much from her but little do any of them know that someone else more dangerous has a bigger prank planned.

The story:

Gloria's tale is one of exaggeratedly passionate romance and adventure on the high seas in a fantastical realm! It will be cheesy, bawdy and a romping all-around good time! It’s a story more meant to be picked up in the grocery store than it is to be found at the top of the best-seller list. Gloria is well aware of this.

- Princess Salacia's 100th birthday party. Her own prank, foiled by her vigilant family, throws her more easily into a previously unknown plot to kidnap her.

- A human crew is hired by a mysterious baddie to carry out the kidnapping. Sally fights her imprisonment but the ship is run by a cruelly jealous female captain.

- Sally meets the dashing first mate. He finds her obnoxious and spoiled. She finds him filthy, yet handsome. ^_~

- The human crew, as instructed, demand a ransom from the kingdom of Neptunus: Sally in exchange for rare magical artifacts rumored to be used to raise a mystical, long-buried undersea army.

- Sally and the first mate begin to flirt, eventually admitting they are fond of one another. Meanwhile, internal strife within Neptunus’ ruling structure lead to the magical artifacts being sent to the pirate crew!

- Sally finds out about the first mate’s longstanding affair with the vicious female captain of the ship! But they realize, despite their personal problems, both the human and mermaid empires are in danger as kingdoms clash, politics become twisted, an ancient army is raised and Sally finds herself maturing. She knows she must save her kingdom and feels her inevitable destiny approaching.

- Sally and her rugged new lover must mutiny, form their own crew, and with their band of misfits, save the kingdoms from the ultimate evil while looking good and falling in passionate love!

Will they save the world? Will Sally finally embrace true love as well as her destiny? What of her forbidden love to a low born surface dweller?!

Flatsale Prompt Response:

Congratulations you've just been accepted into the workshop. How do you feel, what are your plans and who are you going to tell?

Gloria’s hand trembled, the letter shaking gently in an echo of her excitement. Her full cheeks turned a bright shade of crimson and her usually gentle smile had stretched into a full blown grin. The letter in her hand had been what she had been patiently waiting for since her entry was sent out several weeks ago. Of course her version of patient, when it came to Mister Baenare’s workshop, was an uncharacteristic rushing for the mail as soon as it dropped through her mail slot every day at two o’clock.

The petite older woman did a tiny hop of glee, accompanied by a giggle, as she refolded the letter and tucked it into the pocket of her cardigan sweater. The letter’s details would all be gone over later but for now she had to tell someone! Gloria picked up her telephone, adjusted her glasses and peered at the numbers. Just as she was about to dial she stopped. Another tiny giggled bubbled from her ample bosom as she put the phone back on its cradle.

“You are a writer now, Gloria! You must write!”

The grandmother of five padded across the room to her writing desk. She put the lid on the large box of notes that contained the majority of her novel. The backs of cereal boxes and stuck together post-it notes were all neatly stacked in plot order and hidden in it’s cardboard depths . Gloria took a clean sheet of paper from the drawer and rolled it into her typewriter. Taking a seat, she comfortably set her slipper-clad feet on top of the unopened laptop box (bought for her by her son) that she used as a footrest while she wrote. Gloria adjusted her glasses and clicked her tongue thoughtfully before her dainty hands began to click across the keys.

Dear Jim,

No this isn’t a joke, I am writing you a letter. Yes, I know I could have just called you. With this wonderful news that I have received today, I couldn’t help but write it all out. By the time you receive the letter I may have called you anyway! Just file this away under ‘crazy things mom has done in her old age’ with those terribly made needlework cards that I know you are keeping, despite how ugly they are, from Christmas four years ago. Let me get to the point though.

I WAS ACCEPTED TO THE WORKSHOP! Yes your old mom is going to be sailing away to a tropical island to work on her very own novel! Benjamin Baenare is running it! Can you believe it?! I know that when I told you all that I was entering that you probably just thought it was another of my hobbies that I would lose interest in after a week. I just wanted you to know (and pass it along to your brother and sister) that I am serious! I’ve been working on my story since you were all kids. I never told you… I never even told your dad (rest his soul). It’s not that I didn’t want to share, but there were so many more important things to worry about than my silly little story. I have no regrets. You are all the most wonderful children a mother could have and your father was the most darling man. It was my decision to prioritize my life the way I did and having been accepted to the workshop only makes me believe that waiting was the right decision. As shallow as it may sound, it’s wonderful to have something you’ve created be deemed at least worthy by someone famous. I haven’t gone over the details just yet (I just received the letter minutes ago) and so travel plans haven’t been worked out. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure I call you about that.

I just couldn’t hold in my excitement! I am a writer now and so I wrote you! I love you dearly and I will speak to you soon. Expect a phone call soon and please tell Debra and the kids that mom-mom is going to be a famous novelist! Ha! Deb may be the only one that would enjoy my book anyway.

Love you!

-Mom

P.S. Tell little Jimmy that I’m sorry I missed his soccer game last week but I heard he scored a goal. Go Panthers! <3!

Gloria pulled the sheet free, gave it a last look over and indulged herself with another surprisingly girlish giggle. She folded it gently and pushed it into an envelope. Her thoughts danced with her own impending journey to paradise mixed with the paradise and adventure of her novel. As she scrawled her eldest son's address across the envelope she allowed her imagination to carry her away.

"Oh Gloria.. You are a card!"
