Asali'jua had told him, once, how a funeral was to be done for a lion that had truly died; before hers, the pride had seen no death, only children who did not return. Had she known it would be different for him? She had known so many things, surely she had not missed this. She had to have told him how to do this for a reason, even if he hadn't understood until now. As he stood before his pride - her pride - the thought was comforting, as thoughts of his mother always were.

With the males of Adhabu-shinda's family, Nari had brought the deceased lion's body to the river while Piliroho gathered the pride. What was left of Adhabu-shinda was not a pretty sight - he'd been dead for some time, and scavengers had been at work. It was a sight he'd have liked to spare everyone, the family especially, but that was not how it was done. There was a proper order to these things.

Facing those present, he took a deep breath. "Adhabu-shinda is lost to us, and his soul has been set to wandering. It is time now for him to return to the earth, where he will rest until the time is right for him to return."

The King turned back to Adhabu-shinda's remains, and the unconscious form of a hare he had caught while waiting for his Courtesan to arrive with the pride. Placing it on top of the corpse, he slit its throat to spill its blood, then faced the pride again. "We ask the spirits to oversee his final journey, and those of us all as we mourn him."

And with that, he turned and pushed Adhabu-shinda into the river to be carried away by its current.

There was a strange, sick-feeling knot in Hitaahita's stomach. The news of the death was shocking and unexpected, and he still did not know what to think of it. He had only recently settled into the pride, perhaps naively thinking that nothing would ever go wrong there. But he could see now that he had been sorely mistaken.

With the vivid memory of the tattered corpse fresh still in his mind, the male watched the river's current embrace the dead lion and carry him away. It was a strange sight. It was a sad sight. But despite all this, only one thought filled the male's head.

Kabusha's ears flicked back warily, death had never been a stranger to her, but it was never easy to face. The poor male that had lost is life...it had clearly been painful and Kabu only hoped that his soul was at peace now, not lingering still in pain from his death.

She didn't plan to stay long, she had cubs at home that she couldn't leave alone for long. Though their eyes were open now and they were known to the pride, they still nursed and needed their mother with them.

Now, with this brutal murder, she was even more reluctant to leave her babies alone.

Domevlo was trying to stand strong, while the safe haven he loved was falling apart. Why? It hurt him deeply. With each death he remembered his own murderous past. Now he knew just how deeply he had hurt others. But wasn;t he hurting then too?

Sadly the golden-eyed Domevlo walked over to Bekile, no,..Kabusha, now, wasn't it?
"Kabusha..I know you have young ones. Please, watch over them and yourself. The little Parisa-" the young one who one day snuck out of the den and found her way to to the large lion's watchful gaze- "especially. Any more little escape antics,...could be fatal. Who knows who is responsible for this,....the death of an adult is sad,...but to lose a child is a tragedy."

She watched the body float away, unable to feel much but sorrow. A member of her family, gone. Magebari-gura prayed to the spirits to help her relative in the afterlife, and moved closer to her cubs. Though they might not fully understand all that happened, they knew when someone had been lost, and for that they mourned.

Her ear flicked and she turned her head to catch a glimpse of Domevlo speaking to Kabusha, saying something in a kind tone. She hoped that whatever he said, her friend would heed it. Domevlo was not a lion to ignore.

Ukosa stood beside Kabusha and her mate. Tear streaks stained her cheeks but her manner was stoic. She had cried much when the news came and spent the night huddled against Unus in their den, torn between grief for her brother and worry for her cubs. The cause of Adhabu's death was not known. Whispers of foul play ran through the pride. But who could do such a thing? And why?

She wanted to believe that Adhabu's death was merely an accident. Maybe old age was starting to catch up with them. When Domevlo spoke with Kabusha Ukosa turned away, hiding her face in Unus's mane, teeth bared. She couldn't stand to hear such talk.

Kabu shuddered as she remeber her terror at waking up to find little Parisa gone. She nodded her head to the big male, other might fear him, but he had always spoke to her kindly and been gentle to her daughter, " I will Dom. They are a handful but I love them dearly. I wanted to thank you again for returning her home."

The big male was kindness itself when it came to her and her cubs, that alone had made her trust him. " I will keep an closer eye on all of them." She felt Uko shudder and turned to lick her sister's shoulder soothingly. "It will all be alright Uko love. You will see..."

Domevlo gave a small nod. "For her sake a feared the 'gators and swamp snakes. Now there is more to fear." he heaved a sigh, determination now in his glossy eyes.

"I'll find the killer. Justice will be served, and peace will reign once again."

...........He was such a hypocrite......

Aushitia'moyo bowed her head in respect, regardless of the fact that she had not known the deceased. After Asali'jua had passed, the older lioness had become quite reclusive, the fear of the unknown keeping her to only attend the most important of services that the pride performed. Even then, only skirting along the edges of a group.

She murmured under her breathe, wishing the spirits to comfort the male as he completed the last journey his spirit would see. Her rosy eyes slowly opening, she glanced around at the group that had gathered, mourning for a lost member of their spiritual pride.

Feeling the overwhelming heavy air of grief, the lioness disappeared back to her home, only remembering her few children that had never returned from their naming journey.

Unus looked at the sight of the death with much disbelief. He let his mate snuggle into his side as he felt her large belly rub against his side as his voice was caught in his throat his fur stood up on end. He began to look terrible but with another nuzzle from his mate he calmed as he leaned into her. Surely nothing would happen to her she promised to be there for him always and forever. He smiled but just barely as it quickly faded.

"It will be alright my love think of the cubs don't stress of how it happened just know he's in a better place." He told her trying to encourage that nothing foul happened and it was simple his time to go they just came upon him to late.

Her violet eyes where bright as she gazed up at the big male, " I am sure you will. You are welcome to come visit the children any time you like." She was glad for Unus and Dome, that both males had taken an interest in the cubs.

She gazed over at her brother and his mate before back to Dome "I should be getting back to the den before the children wake up and find me gone. Thank you again my friend."

Nuzzling her brother and sister-in-law again, she headed home at a rather fast pace, wanting to put the death behind her and be with the loves of her life again.

Ukosa turned a grateful eye toward Kabu. She did not need to be here, but it meant so much that she came.

"Thank you both for coming. You can't imagine how hard this would be if I had to come alone." She sniffled and tried to collect herself. Even at her own brother's funeral she couldn't stand to lose her composure. Death was unfamilar to her. She had not seen it since her parents passed. That was so long ago. How could time pass so quickly? Wasn't it just yesterday that she chased Adhabu through the tall grass?

Those were such carefree days. Ordinarily she felt a little embaressed when she thought of herself at that age, so wild and boyish with her brothers. Now it was enough to remember that they had been happy.

"Yes, you shouldn't want to worry them... I wish they could have known my brother. Perhaps, one day..." Tears welled in her eyes. She shook her head, trying to shake them out. "It doesn't matter now. Thank you, Kabusha."

As Kabu went away, Ukosa turned to her mate. Her eyes were deeply troubled. "I am thinking of them, Unus. I can't seem to stop. Their time is drawing nearer every day. What if something happens to you after the cubs are born? Or... to me?"

The news had left Nasrin strangely numb. Fear was welling inside her as she watched the body being carried away by the river's current. She approached Hitaahita and snuggled against her friend, silently asking for reassurance. Even tough he was just as shocked as she was. Their safe haven was not a very safe place right now it seemed. She shut her eyes tightly, trying to block out the image of the dead lion. She hoped with all her heart none of her family would be hurt in this terrible way. She didn't know if she could bear it.

Unus looked to his lover shaking his head as she leaned into her. "No my love do not think they they will be fine as you will be." He said he closed his eyes not wanting to voice his fears that what ever was going on would soon hurt him things always seemed to go bad for him right as they started to go good.

"Take all the time you need." He told his lover licking her cheek and waiting at her side. He rarely left it knowing soon he would not be able to be near her for when it was time to leave him to bring their cubs into the world. It thrilled him to no end and yet it was the part he was dreading most against he would have to suffer not know if his mate and cubs where okay.

She nuzzled him in return, but her eyes wandered from their course to watch the dark waters churning through the swamp. The current was unusally strong here. Perhaps this part of the swamp was fed by a swift river. Maybe it was simply Mama Bwana drawing a conveyance through the water to ferry her children away. Where does this current lead?

She let out a quiet sigh. Her breath stirred the whiskers on Unus's face but made no sound. "I don't want to cause you distress. It's just that I can't help thinking dark thoughts now that my brother is gone."

As she watched the current the tears finally overwhelmed the wells of her eyes. They rose up quietly and ran down her cheeks without making a fuss, like dew drops gliding down the back of a leaf. She looked to Unus and met his eyes. "Maybe I am just acting paranoid. But it's worth talking about, isn't it? We must all return to the earth when our time comes. We shouldn't leave behind words left unsaid. Unus... when the spirits call me... I want you to know, I just want you to be happy. Do you understand?"
