Chapter 1 - Part 1
“Elizabell, be quiet! You don’t want your mum catching us, do you?!”
Elizabell leaned over to pick up the fallen garbage can. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to knock it over. I didn’t see it in the dark…”
“Shh! The more you talk, the less time we have before she wakes up and finds you gone.” Ernie Bob glared at Elizabell. “Do you want to go back there? I’m not stopping you, you can go back right now.”
Elizabell stood up straight. “No, I’m leaving too. I’m not about to let a garbage can stand in front of me and you.”
“Good.” He leaned down to kiss Elizabell’s cheek, but stopped halfway. “What was that?”
The two stood silently for a moment.
“Did you hear it?”
“What? What did you hear?”
“Quiet, quiet. Listen.”
Ernie Bob grasped Elizabell’s hand. Whatever it was, it was coming for them…
Elizabell squinted her eyes, focusing on the upcoming object. She gasped. “It’s my mom’s car.”
Almost instantly, Ernie Bob broke away from Elizabell’s grasp and sprinted off into the trees. Elizabell couldn’t tell which direction he had gone in, but she followed to the best of her ability.
Behind her, she could hear her mother’s tires come to a halt and the door burst open. “Elizabell Swanson!” her mother’s screeching voice pierced her ears. “Get back here at once!”
I won’t be Elizabell Swanson for much longer… she gloated silently as she ran blindly through the woods. In just a few days, I’ll be Mrs. Ernie Bob Hossom.
Was it just her imagination, or did it feel like somebody was right behind her, watching her every move? Surely her mother couldn’t have caught up that quickly…
“Don’t you run away from me, you little b***h!” she heard echoing off the trunks of the trees. “You think I‘m an idiot? I will find you, miss, and you won‘t enjoy the whipping you‘ll get when I do!”
Elizabell felt her lungs tightening… she was gasping for breath. Her head felt light, and the world around her- as if it could get any darker- went pitch black.
Her leg seemed to give out from underneath her, and she came crashing down into the muddy floor. Pain shot through her leg continuously.
Shakily she pushed herself up again, but her arms didn’t seem strong enough to hold her body. She craned her neck and saw blood- too much blood- streaming from her leg. Her foot was caught underneath a root, and her leg was twisted unnaturally.
“That was one hard fall, miss.”
Elizabell looked up to see a tall, strong-looking man leaning against a tree a few feet from her head. He stared nonchalantly at his hand, in which a tightly wound scroll was held. His chest-length brown hair fell down untidily over his shoulders, and a scar extended across his face. He looked handsome and kind, but something about him made Elizabell feel uneasy. She screamed.
In a flash, the man was covering her mouth, his cloak coated in mud. “You don’t want the stragglers hearing you, miss. Don’t worry, I’m hear to bring you to a safe place where you’ll no longer be persecuted for your differences.”
Elizabell pulled away from his hands and tried once again to pull herself into a standing position. Unsuccessfully, of course.
The man stood up, shaking his head. “You mustn’t push yourself, young lady. Your leg is broken pretty badly. But if you come with me, I can fix it.”
“Yeah, sure.” Elizabell snorted. “While you’re at it, why not try fixing that head of yours?”
He opened his mouth to answer, but Elizabell cut him off. “No, I don’t want to hear it. I’m not going with you, alright? I’m going to wait for my love to find me.”
A sorry smile spread across his face. “I don’t know that your love would like to see you in this condition. How do you even know he’s coming?”
Anger boiled in her veins, but somehow Elizabell couldn’t answer. Ernie Bob had run off without her… what if he never came back?
Tears welled up in her eyes, but she quickly wiped them away. “No, Ernie Bob will always come back for me.”
But her voice didn’t sound as sure as she’d wanted it to be.
The man looked down at her, with a smile spread across his face. He raised his hand, winked, and said something too quickly and too quietly to hear. Elizabell felt a tingling sensation in her leg. Turning her head, she saw the part of her leg that was broken reattach itself. The skin pulled itself together, as the bones locked into place. The pain subsided. He broken leg was fixed in less than 30 seconds.
She stood shakily, looking gratifyingly at the man. “Who are you?”
He chuckled. “Why is it nobody ever knows who I am? Goodness!”
Confused, Elizabell cocked her head to the side slightly. She’d never seen this guy on TV, not even on commercials.
The man flashed a perfect smile and began, “I am the one and only Head Hunter of Hornswaggle, the school of all schools. I am the best, second only to the great Dumbledore himself. I am not only extremely handsome, I’m also supremely intelligent. I am Beninber Ichleiner!”
Elizabell couldn’t help but laugh. “Beninber… Ichleiner?”
He folded his arms across his chest. “You’re one to talk. I mean, Elizabell? Really, what kind of name is that? You sounded like you‘d be a cow or something.”
“I never told you my name.” Elizabell snapped. “Are you a stalker? Get the hell away from me, pervert!”
Beninber choked out maniacal laughter. “I think we have a bit of a misunderstanding… I have to know these things. Being Head Hunter requires me to know the names of all my students, and students-to-be.”
“Students-to-be?” Elizabell frowned angrily. “I’m 18... Done with school. I get to leave this hellhole and-”
“It’s never too late to attend Hornswaggle, however you are quite right. Usually I’ve come to retrieve the students much earlier than 18 years of age, but I think we missed you when scanning for people with the gene before. We just found you today.” He looked around worriedly. “Now, your persecutors are still in the woods, am I correct?”
Elizabell gasped. “She could be anywhere! Oh my God, I’m in trouble, I need to hide!” She ran shakily on her previously-broken leg.
Beninber jumped in front of her. “Elizabell, you don’t understand! I’m here to bring you to the educational center of Hornswaggle to learn more about what makes you unique from the stragglers here. I can get you to a safe place, away from those who wish you harm!”
Elizabell heard her mother’s shrill voice not far off. She looked into Beninber’s beautiful blue eyes. He seemed truthful enough. Besides, Ernie Bob wasn’t coming back. He had abandoned her. She was all alone now.
She nodded quickly.
Beninber sighed triumphantly. “Finally, someone’s coming on their own accord.” He flicked his finger and in his hand appeared a pot of boiling tea. “Care for a sip?”
Elizabell stared confusedly at the tea, and shook her head slowly.
Beninber shrugged. “Your loss.” With a wave of the hand, the tea was gone.
In moments, the two seemed to lift away from the Earth… or had the Earth fallen from underneath them? The air became suffocating, and the screeching of her mother gradually disappeared. The world around them seemed to disappear, only the two of them still remained. Slowly, the world came back into view and she could once again breathe. But she wasn’t home anymore. All across the horizon, a desert stretched as far as she could see. There were no people, no signs of life whatsoever.
“Where are we?” she gasped, the sun drying the mud to her skin.
Beninber smiled gleefully. “Elizabell, welcome to Wyowaffer.”

Chapter 1 - Part 2
Beninber stood facing a large mountain cliff, jutting off the incline of rock sharply. So far, Wyowaffer wasn’t much to see.
“So… this is Wyowaffer…?” Elizabell moaned. She was expecting something a bit less dry and hot, and certainly a lot less mountainous.
“Yes!” Beninber smiled maniacally, then frowned. “Well, actually, no. This is merely the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.” He motioned for Elizabell to follow him as he stepped toward the cliff. He touched his finger to the jagged rock. “What we’re looking for is in here.”
Elizabell placed her hands on the mountain’s cliff. The rocks scorched her flesh. “In… the mountain?”
Beninber sighed. “Look, I’ll show you. Step back, step back.”
Elizabell backed away slowly, her eyes fixed on Beninber. He mumbled an odd chant, moved his hand in rapid movements too quickly to see, and moved quickly to where Elizabell was standing.
“That’s it?”
An insane smile spread over Beninber’s face. “Watch the cliff.”
Elizabell became aware of a low rumbling, growing louder as time passed. The edge of the mountain began to open up… the mountain falling away. Underneath was a grassy, lush city with fountains and a clock tower.
“Now, Elizabell, this is Wyowaffer.”
It was amazing. A town hidden below a mountain, of all things! The two stepped into the plaza, and Beninber began showing Elizabell around.
“You see, stragglers are very curious and nosey. When they see new land, they simply need to explore it.” Beninber explained, not needing Elizabell to ask. “For this reason, the Rocky Mountains were created. Toxey Turnvey, the governor, knew it would be much easier to practice magic if the outside world wasn’t in our business the entire time…”
Elizabell stopped dead in her tracks. “Wait… did you say… magic?”
Beninber nodded his head. “Yes, is there a problem? Don’t worry, your persecutors won’t know you’re here, so they can’t trace you or anything.”
“You mean my mom. She was chasing me because I was going to run away and get married. I have no ‘magical abilities.’”
Beninber shook his head. “You are completely mistaken. See, we scanned the forest and found a holder of the magical gene, and the gene could only have become active in a child or teen. Your mother is not a child or teen.” He chuckled. “At least, I hope she’s not.”
Elizabell put her hands on her hips. “I wasn’t the only teenager there. Ernie Bob was with me.”
Beninber’s face went red. “Oh s**t.”
He grabbed her hand and ran behind a small, seemingly abandoned warehouse. He broke away from her hand and ran to the brick wall of the building, smashing his head against it. “Stupid, stupid, stupid! You’ve messed up again!!”
“You scanned for the gene before…” Elizabell explained. “Why not just scan me again right now? You‘ll have your answer then.”
In-between head bangs, Beninber was able to get out, “I can’t.” Bang. “We don’t have the-” Bang. “Resources to do so-” Bang. “Right now!!”
Elizabell walked over curiously, amazed he wasn’t unconscious. She placed her hand comfortingly on his shoulder.
“Don’t blame yourself. You weren’t to know which of us had the gene…”
Beninber jumped away from the wall and clapped his hands together. “That’s it!” He exclaimed. “I don’t know which one had the magical gene! So for all I know, it might be you! Besides, it’s too late for you to go back now!”
He stared hopefully at Elizabell. “Would it be too much to ask of you to attend this school and pose as a magical being? If anyone found out I let a possible straggler attend, I would be sacked for sure!”
Elizabell looked reproachfully at him, wanting to say no. But his eyes made her feel guilty… she couldn’t possibly turn him down.
“Yeah… sure. I might have the magical gene anyway, right?”
Beninber pulled Elizabell into a tight embrace, smiling insanely once more. “Thank you, thank you, thank you! They’ll never find you out, I swear!!”
Suddenly serious, he pulled away and put his hand to his chin. “Now, what magical being could we pretend you were? Not demon, those aren’t allowed… you don’t look like a vampire… you’re not hairy enough to be a werewolf…”
Elizabell sat down quietly, watching Beninber pace back and forth. “What about a witch?”
“No, no… everyone’s a witch nowadays… let’s be more original.”
“Fairy?”
“You have no wings, silly.”
Elizabell sighed. “How ‘bout I just be nothing? It’s all that’s left.”
Beninber slapped his hand to his forehead, grinning. “I’ve got it! It’s so simple, I should have thought of it much sooner.”
“I’m going to be… nothing?”
Beninber cackled evilly. “Better than that, dear. You will be a fire spirit!”
“I’m a ghost? I thought those had to be transparent.” Elizabell grumbled.
“No, not a ghost! There are big differences between a ghost and a spirit. For one thing, ghosts aren‘t allowed in Hornswaggle. Plus, spirits actually have magical abilities. You will be able to harness the power of fire!!”
While Beninber seemed to think this plan was ingenious, Elizabell couldn’t find what was so great about it. “And what if I don’t have the gene? What’ll you do then?”
Again, Beninber laughed. “The same thing we always do if people end up not at the same level as the others: I kick you out and tell you to come back in three years. Usually by that time everyone’s forgotten about that person and I have to get them re-acquainted with the teachers. So I‘ll just do the same for you!”
His eyes became pleading. “Please, would you do this for me?”
She wasn’t so sure of his plan, but there wasn’t any other option. She couldn’t go back now, and she didn’t want to get Beninber in trouble after all the help he‘d given her.
Reluctantly, she agreed.
Beninber pulled her up quickly. “We probably should get you settled in… I’ll get you hooked up with some fake identification papers acknowledging you as a new species and some money. I’ll get you a room in a hotel. School starts in one week, be sure to have your supplies with you by that time.”
He nodded politely, and vanished.
