[Onyal's Info Goes Here]
Rider Name: Onyal
Rider Age: 25 turns
Rider Gender: Female
Rider Sexuality: Homosexual
Rider History: Onyal was like many who originated in the lower caverns; she was the result of a mating flight, her mother a cook and father a losing bronze during a mating flight. Onyal spent the years before Impression working in the kitchen or getting in trouble for playing in the Telgar trams (want to race?). She enjoyed playing the messier games, roughhousing, and racing with the boys; being scolded for ruining a new pair of slacks wasn’t uncommon. Her childhood was average, filled with tales of the long past Plague and legends of Chaseth.
When she reached the age of possible Impression, she was put on the Sands to stand for a clutch. Her feelings were muddled on the subject; she did not like the idea of being chased around by bronzeriders, so the life of a Weyrwoman certainly wasn’t for her. She did not impress her first time standing, or even her second, but eventually, to her own surprise, she impressed a brown dragon.
She did not know exactly what homosexuality was (seeing men paired with men isn’t that uncommon after a flight..so what’s the problem?) and was for the most part oblivious that there really was such a thing. Her first exposure to other’s feelings about homosexuality was when she was twelve; her best friend J’ta (then Jortam) was being roughly dunked by other young boys and teased during a hot summer day in the water. This brought up questions that her mother was quite reluctant to answer. Why did they hate Jortam? Why were they so mad? Her mother had the average Telgar attitude toward homosexuality and felt that if she ignored the subject long enough, it might just go away. When she asked Jortam later in the sevenday, he revealed the real reason: he liked men over women and that was frowned upon.
Thinking back on this experience Onyal has realized why she hid her feelings for women for so long, and although it may have been apparent to some that she was homosexual, she felt she hid it pretty well, until the impression of Eshuth.
Being forced from the only home she has ever known has affected her greatly, she has to subscribe to a different view of sexuality and female dragon riders, and although she agrees with the High Reaches’ beliefs it is hard to deny one’s upbringing, she feels a lot of shame because she had to leave Telgar.
Rider Personality: This little lady does not discuss feelings, ask personal questions, or openly seek to know and understand others’ on a personal level. If you need small talk or light conversation, Onyal’s your gal, if you’ve just broken up with your weyrmate of five years and need a shoulder to cry on think again. She has never dreamt of falling in love or having children; she dreams of flying thread, brawling, and playing cards. She doesn’t like to discuss people, but she likes to discuss things (Wow, those riding straps are of a great quality) and places.
She can become openly aggressive and opinionated about an issue being discussed and is not afraid to make a confrontation physical (Her oppinions
never breach the subject of sexuality/pretty women, ect).
Onyal has two strict rules to live by: do not discuss your or anyone else’s sexuality, and do not openly flirt or ask a woman for anything unless they approach you.
She feels a lot of shame about being homosexual, and tries to hide it. Flights are one of the only times she has the freedom away from the shame; if she wakes up with a woman then she can blame it on the lust of flight and can quickly excuse herself from the situation.
She has unwavering loyalty to her new Weyr, they accept her when her own people would not. She works very hard to show her loyalty that she cannot exactly express in words.
Flaws: Doesn’t allow people ‘in’/detachment, she will often seek out a physical altercation to blow off steam, and less willing to seek help when needed.
Going for her: Can keep a secret, doesn’t get emotionally attached so there is generally no drama, independent thinker, and loyalty to Weyr and folk.
Rider Appearance: Onyal keeps her her hair cropped short, think dark brown, short, shaggy, bowl cut. She has in the past grown it out but does not like it blowing about when flying. An average height verging on the smaller side, she’s descendant from miners in Crom (the stereotype is the best miners are short). She’s built like a tree trunk, sturdy, not very noticeable curves. Almond shaped, light brown eyes.
