At times Eshuth was so quiet that his rider felt the need to make mental contact to ensure that he was still there. This afternoon was one of those times, Eshuth, the water's going to be as cold as between before you know it and I wont be getting in with you.

The short woman stood in the shallow end of Faseth's Lake, she had rolled up her pant legs and kicked her boots off unceremoniously in order to put her feet in the cool water. There wasn't really a point in getting in the water. Eshuth rarely became dirty and did not necessarily need her help bathing. She always inspected him after leaving the water to look for dirt, and if he asked (something very rare) she would oil him. The brown was no longer growing and no longer needed constant oiling.

You don't have to come in now, Eshuth answered and plunged his head under the water to get a better look at something on the bottom. His movements caused ripples in the water that lapped at the rider's legs. For the hard working brown bathing was another chore that must be done. He needed to look his best to show that Browns were clean and orderly. Finding the object of little interest he emerged and looked back at Onyal on, his eyes swirling a slow blue.

It was another day for exploring, the Candidates having been dismissed for the time being and meals a bit far off in the schedule, leaving Panata to wander aimlessly outside and towards the lake he had often seen in passing. He'd never been there on his own, nor had he found the courage to ask any of the others to go with him or show it to him, so as he took running strides to reach the water he looked like an awkward wherry trying not to stumble as it learned to move.

"Whoa-!!"

As the expanse of water drew before him, nothing else seemed to fill Panata's gaze and all else went unnoticed. The lake was far grander than what he'd heard and was what he'd expected it to be, being that he'd never seen it before. Many of the Weyrbrats he spoke to told about the lake and what was in it, many of them snickering at Panata's nods and curious questions, and as he stood by the water's edge he honestly wondered if such a thing was below the surface.

"Is there really a body in there?"

The youth didn't really want to believe there was, but what if he was wrong and the others had been snickering at his ignorance? that would be horrible! Panata sighed after his question, rubbing the back of his head as the watched the water go still and then suddenly ripple, and he turned his head to see the cause.

There is a boy running this way, Eshuth informed Onyal and started toward the shore, he was done with his bath, it was time to start chores. He tried very hard to remember what they were supposed to doing today but could not recall.

Onyal turned at the young man's exclamation, what was so exciting? Had he never seen a dragon before? She thought and then heard his question. Ah, so he had heard of the lake, that's what was so exciting. Not, that you're not something to see, Eshuth, she could tell he was listening to he.

"There sure is kid, he'll gobble you right up too," she chuckled and waited for the reaction. She did not understand the tale of Faseth's Lake, everyone knew that dragons could not harm you, right?

" . . . really? That's got to be difficult then for the dragons who want to swim in the lake. Is he really safe in there?"

Panata had startled at first when he spotted the woman...and then her massive Brown, but he did his best to keep his composure. A Candidate should be respectful in their appearances at all times, and he didn't want to see like that much of a fool. It was clearly obvious though that he wasn't from the Weyr, though with the woman's answer he would venture to believe she was.

Though after a moment or two a crease of thought moved across his forehead, and Panata frowned when he managed to connect point A to point B. Things didn't add up with the way everyone had been talking and with what this female rider had just said.

"No, there couldn't be one in there. Dragons can't hurt humans, and you wouldn't let yours in the water if it wasn't safe anyway. I mean, he is really big and. . . breathtaking, but that still wouldn't be right, right?"

Eshuth snorted audibly, I am certainly safe in the water. Nothing's going to get me. He told Onyal his eyes swirling a bit faster at the thought, he was Brown, and nothing could get him.

"It's a tale older candidates tell to spook younger candidates, and mother's to their children to keep them away from the lake," she paused looking at him, "You're correct, a dragon cannot willing hurt a human, sometimes it happens at Hatchings."

She loved the raw emotion of a Hatching although she would never admit it, the fear, the hunger, and the sheer power of them was something she admired, there was nothing shameful about being emotional for a dragon's birthing day. There were eggs on the Sands, there was going to be that flood of emotion again.

"I am Onyal, this is Eshuth, he says that he is completely safe in the water, and is quite offended you'd think he wouldn't be able to fend off another dragon."

I did not say that, Eshuth held his head so that he could look at the boy and His.

You meant it.

Well, shoot He hadn't meant to offend anyone, least of all a massive Brown dragon that could accidentally step on him without ever even knowing he'd done it. Not that it would ever actually happen, as the woman who called herself Onyal had just reminded him.

"My name is Panata, and I am very sorry for offending you."

Almost immediately the boy bowed his head in apology, though he didn't keep it bent as long as he normally would have were he just apologizing to a person. Panata didn't know the proper etiquette for dealing with dragons when you said something that may have taken the wrong way, so he felt like apologizing the the rider as well might work.

"I am new to Weyr life and do not know much about the proper etiquette when speaking to others here, so I tend to just say whatever is on my mind without thinking first. Sorry."

Once again Panata bowed his head, though when he pulled it back up he had a sheepish grin.

"To be honest though, I think Browns are amazing dragons who have no limits for what they can do."

Eshuth feeding off of Onyal's odd mood rumbled and dipped his head in acknowledgment, it was not normal for him to acknowledge anyone not bound to a dragon. Tell him there is no need to be sorry.

"Don't worry, I now how that goes, he says it is okay," she did not know what life would be like outside of the Weyr, or what she would expect first coming to one. It was odd switching from home--Telgar, she corrected herself internally, to High Reaches, but from a Hold to a Weyr was probably much different.

Eshuth rumbled again, they should be getting to chores, he thought again, but did not inform Onyal, she was interacting this was a good thing.

"I think you and Eshuth are on the same page on that one," Onyal chuckled regarding browns being the best.

"There'll be a Hatching soon, Dorath's curse is over, a Queen has been laid," she spoke conversationally, he possibly knew, he was Searched it seemed, she wasn't going to ask, and if he told that was quite alright.

Panata was watching the Brown with amazement at his movements, though his full attention was set to the woman who would actually speak to him. It was exciting that he'd managed to stumble upon a rider while just out messing around and exploring, and part of him wished he'd brought Meisir along. The little Brown firelizard had only seen dragons when they'd come to the hall and he wanted to show him a real Brown such as this.

"We got to do a Touching recently, on the eggs. This is my first time Standing for Impression so I didn't really know what to do, but there were many others who seemed to have a good idea. The eggs were all so very warm, and there were actually a few who had brown shells. I know the color on the outside doesn't really reflect what is inside, save for the Gold, but I couldn't help but think those eggs were nice."

So yes, Panata liked Browns. Meisir's influence for certain, but that didn't mean he'd shy away from any other color given the opportunity; he simply found browns more beautiful with their earth tone. This may or may not be because he'd only seen a handful of Dragons, maybe even just Eshuth and the one that searched him, so that too could jade Panata's opinions.

"Have you had a chance to see them?"

Eshuth liked this one, he did seem to know that Browns were the very, very best color, and he might be a dragon rider one day that would be interesting.

Onyal nodded along with the young man remembering her very first Touching. "Touchings are a very nice time to get acquainted with the dragon inside, it stops from too many being mauled on the sand."

"I have not seen Dorath's clutch, but I am sure I will at the Hatching," she was trying to recall the number of eggs lain, was she told? Of course it was Weyr gossip and she must've heard in passing, "Good luck," she squirmed a bit, "You know..impressing and all."

"How many eggs, the number escapes me?" She laughed, "Memory of a Dragon and all." She wasn't usually so forgetful, she left that part up to Eshuth.

"If I counted right and remember well, there were fifteen. No, sixteen, counting the Gold egg. I'd never seen them before, but...it was like finding a treasure for the first time. I wonder if...if I don't Impress, will I still feel this way about them each time I step on the sands?"

Thoughts of not impressing weren't really what Panata wanted to think about, but he did have to face the reality that there were already quite a few Candidates and only a selected number of eggs. The chances were high that none of the dragons, once from their shells, would find him as the one.

Still, there was no need to be depressed! A Brown rider had just wished him luck, and he should do his best to accept it with grace.

"And...thank you, for wishing me luck. I'll do my best!"

Panata bowed his head again, this time with a smile on his face and the action quite quick.

"Maybe next time we meet, I will have a dragon of my own and we can talk about them. Well, not about them - maybe to them or discuss them. It's really rude to talk about someone right in front of them . . ."

Onyal wasn't keen nn discussing feelings, she didn't have an answer to the young man's question. She didn't like to think about her own, let alone analyze another person's. She shrugged in response, "I don't know."

Eshuth rumbled a sound that was something like a chuckle, he is certainly chatty, isn't he? Eshuth liked weyrlings and dragonets, this boy reminded him of them, they were new and trying to prove their worth. His dark brown hide heaved as he rumbled.

"Maybe next time," it had taken her a long time to Impress, she was almost to the age where you weren't supposed to stand anything longer when Eshuth came into her life. It was a discouraging thought that she did not want to share with Panata, he seemed like a nice enough person.

Eshuth lowered his head and fixed Panata with one eye, he'd been a bit curious how blues and greens could tell if a person could Impress, and browns generally could not. He couldn't really sense anything from he boy that was different than any of the other people he came in contact with. Browns were just as good as blues and greens, the idea they could not do something the other colors could was almost maddening.

Ask him to scratch my eye ridge, please.

Onyal blinked looking at Eshuth curiously, You want him to touch you? It wasn't unusual for Eshuth to ask her for the favor, but another person wasn't usual at all.

"He'd like you to scratch right here," she paused, "If you wouldn't mind." Onyal leaned and pointed to the exact spot Eshuth wanted.

"Sure, of course."

Panata did well to hide the excitement in his actions and words at being asked if he would like to scratch an itch for a dragon, his tone almost flat yet still raised to show he was happy, and slowly the boy walked over and placed his small hands were Onyal pointed. He gently began to scratch the spot using the same method he often used on Meisir's own hide, hoping that whatever he was doing would be pleasing to the Brown.

This was a thrill though, to be allowed to touch such a wonderful creature - and to have been asked by him to start with! How many others could baost this right, not that Panata would ever want to brag about this? He didn't have many other Candidate friends to talk too, mostly passing acquaintances, so his words would be smothered onto the ever-listening Meisir.

"Thank you, for allowing me to rub you like this. I hope I am doing it correctly?"

Eshuth rumbled and closed his eyes happily, he will make a dragon very happy with scratching.

"He likes it, so I guess you're doing it right," Onyal gave a shrug. As long as Eshuth was happy, Onyal would allow the conversation to go on, "He says you'll make a dragon happy." Onyal didn't like the mushy stuff, but she knew that Eshuth liked it when he relayed what he was saying.

"Well..I'm thinking that we should go off to do chores and check with our wing," Onyal bobbed her head at the thought. Today was a day for surprises it seemed, Eshuth hadn't reminded her about chores, and he had asked for a favor from a stranger.

We don't have too, Eshuth spoke, but Onyal ignored him.

"It was you know...good to meet you."

(Holy Cow, all of my typos, I sure am sorry about that!)

Panata pulled his hand back when he was sure the dragon was satisfied, as well as the fact the rider was mentioning moving on, and he smiled bright with a happy feeling inside knowing that he'd done something well.

"Oh, by all means go ahead! It was very good to meet you, thank you very much! I would love to meet you again if we have the chance, if only to speak more. You are one of the first riders I have met here and you are so kind, so . . ."

He did his best not to get his hopes up.
