User ImageSomething wasn't quite right with her body. Mollie felt like she was changing; and she wasn't sure how it felt. She wasn't sure if it was good or bad yet. Tail flicking as she paced near her den, the female looked nervous. Sure, one night happened, but it wasn't like she'd get pregnant from one night, could she? Of course not! That wasn't how things worked. ....Was it? No one explained anything like this to the female. And how to break it to Vu? He was still uncomfortable with calling Mollie a mate. Was she supposed to go: "Vu, you're going to be a daddy?"

She laughed at that and then bit down on the inside of her cheek, green eyes flashing upwards to the rising son. Yes, she woke up earlier than her Pad. Why did this have to happen now? Mollie wasn't quite settled in yet. She was putting on a little bit of weight; but she'd been eating good. Maybe she should actually tell Vu how her body's been changing, if he hadn't noticed already.

Peeking into the dark den, a frown creased her lips before she softly called out for Vu. ".....Hey, Vu..? You awake...?" She waited for a reply before inching into the den and then sat next to where her mate usually slept, tail curling around her front paws like she'd always done when she was nervous or scared of something. Maybe he wouldn't be awake. Perhaps she should wait until the morning, when he was more comprehensive.

The sudden appearance of a cold spot in the den brought Vu back from foggy sleep. One ear twitched. He could hear Mollie moving around outside the den, hear her quiet laughter and sighs and wondered if everything was alright. Yet even when she seemed sad he loved her. He loved her. The realization caused him to shudder.

He stayed in the den, eyes closed and head rested on his paws as he listened to Mollie with one ear until she padded down into the den, calling to him. He lifted his head as she came close, feigning grogginess. She looked frightened. “What is it?”

Grogginess was evident in his voice and it caused Molemogi to droop a bit before laying down, pressing her nose to his own in a sort of greeting before licking at his cheek. She should wait until the morning. It would have been the best thing to do. But once Vu was up, it was hard for him to go back to sleep; she'd learned. She licked at his mane that was nearly grown in and sighed a bit.

"We... have to talk about.... changes here," she said in a whisper, biting down on the inside of her cheek again. "...H-how... how would.. you like...... more..? More... ah.. others... in the den with us? Small others, but... others.." She was rambling. Her voice wasn't as froggie as it could have been, a lot smoother now that she was talking more.

“Cubs? Come on, Mollie. I’m still a cub myself.” He smiled as if he found the idea amusing, yet his eyes betrayed a glimmer of apprehension. “I mean we finally have each other all to ourselves. We don’t have to hide from my mom or put up with Zito’s jokes. I’m not even ready to add another grown-up to the family.”

He was speaking of banu. All the other males seemed to have at least two. Though he felt pressured to add a second female to his own harem he would much rather avoid the subject of banu all together, at least until they felt comfortable.

“Besides, we have the rest of our lives to start a family. Let’s have some fun first.” He touched her paw, grinning childishly.

"That's not going to be possible for a while," she murmured softly, huffing a bit more. "....I have been getting fatter.... A-and... My stomach... something moves in it.." She whispered softly, trying to give him the hint without actually saying she might be pregnant. Molemogi looked to the side and willed Vu to get it through his thick skull. Yes, she knew her mate was dense, but really? This dense?

Finally, she just came right out and said it: "I'm pregnant, Vu. O-or... at least... I think. F-from that night..."

“You probably just ate something funny. I heard a story about a guy who ate a whole snake and it kept wriggling in his belly for days.” His confidence was faltering. Mollie, pregnant?

They were too young. This couldn’t happen to them now. Sure, Zito got pregnant with her cubs because of one night with that pink cheetah Sellion, but she just wasn’t careful enough. Vu knew how to be careful with girls.

That took the cake for density, that's for sure. Shifting a bit she shook her head and sighed hard. "Vu. You've caught all my food and killed it. Or the pride did... It was all dead..." The female frowned a bit more and looked back to her mate, smiling a little bit more. "We've.... got cubs on the way, Vu." She would apologize, but she wasn't very sorry. Really, she was glad she was pregnant. It was solid in her mind that she was. This could be a good thing for the young couple. After all, Mollie and Vu would be adding more to their pride.

“Well, you still can’t be pregnant,” Vu stated. He sat up, shoulders straight, and looked at Mollie as if his feeble mortal words were spoken from the mouth of a god. You can’t be pregnant.

Though he heard and understood her no part of him wanted to admit the truth. It wasn’t just that they were too young. Vu’s mane was thickening every day, growing to form the mantle of adulthood that all male lions wore. Mollie too was growing – and not just around her middle. Their new pride already treated them as adults. While Vu took his turns patrolling the boarder Mollie was also participating in the female’s hunts, helping secure food to feed the enormous pride. Their lives were rushing by with the wind and the two of them ran alongside, exhilarant as they panted to keep pace with the changing of day into night. Adventure and opportunity surrounded them. The looming shadow of parenthood seemed poised to attack.

And there was more on his mind, though he dared not speak of his feelings.

So he was ordering her not to be pregnant? Coping mechanism, for sure, but it still hurt he thought he could talk to her that way. Fixing the pale one with a glare, she bared her teeth and stood up straight and tall. "Well, I'm sorry that we got me pregnant, but we did. We're having cubs, Vu." Her voice was quiet, calm, but obviously very annoyed and distressed. "Grow up, ok? ....I love you, and not just as a friend. ....I'm glad I'm having our cubs. ....Ok? So you have to help me raise them."

Part of her wanted to bring Mrost into it. She knew how dedicated he used to be. But she dare not utter the name to her Pad. Oh, no. Not yet, not unless things got desperate and he flat out refused to take care of her and the cubs. "We might not have settled down all the way just yet, but.... We've got to do it faster. We've got to prepare for this children... Please, Vu.. Do not be stubborn about this." She knew he wasn't ready for this, but neither was she. She'd need all the help she could get.

"I'm... going... to try to talk to another lioness about it. To see if there's some ritual or ...something to make this easier on the two of us. Maybe ....if you got... a Banu, she could help me with them."

“We don’t need another female,” he growled. Even as he curled his lips he knew it was nothing more than a vain attempt to look fierce to cover up the blind terror he felt inside. His fur bristled yet his heart raced like a frightened cub. He wished he could close his eyes and make this all go away.

He tried to get past her and exit the den, head shaking in frustration. “I can’t deal with this right now. I need to go for a walk.”

She froze when he bared his own teeth and then looked to the side, letting him pass if he wished. She laid back down, head on her paws and sighed. "Vu.... I can't say 'sorry' about being pregnant. I'm not. .....Just think, though. The way you could teach these little ones how to hunt, how to be strong like you are..." Her voice was weak and sounded of tears that weren't shed. They probably wouldn't be shed. If Vu walked out now, Mollie didn't know what she'd do.

"So... you don't need another female, but I need to talk to another one... I...I didn't have a mom, Vu. I don't know how to act with them." That would be the last thing she'd say to him for a while, or that's what she thought.

“Yeah well, I never had much of a father either,” he sighed. The sadness in her voice latched into his backside as surely as Firekin claws and he turned back unwilling, looking at her sternly. “I’ll be back. I just… I need to be alone for a while.”

He didn’t want her to think he was leaving forever. Now that they were together again he couldn’t even consider leaving her side.

When he spoke again, it soothed a worry she didn't even realized she had. Nodding slowly, Molemogi simply laid there, eyes closed and lost in her own thoughts. Why did he take the news like that? Most males would love to have cubs, wouldn't they? That's always what she thought. Blowing the long hair tuft out of her eyes, Mollie rolled to her side, tail thumping against the ground.

He'd be back... But sleep was trying to claim her. So far, it was winning. Her eyelids were getting so heavy...

Vu watched her for a moment before turning to go. The morning light felt warm on his pelt yet in his stomach remained a cold knot of fear. If he was like his father, this would be time for him to walk away, take up residence in some far off corner of the pride, only visiting two or three times a month to check on the progress of his cubs.

His father said a lot of things about love. Love makes a warrior weak. Love is a useless emotion. He saw the truth clearly now. Ghilt never loved him or his mother. He thought this before, but now he knew it to be true. Vu could not fight this blaze of love in his heart. Even if he wanted to leave he never could have abandoned Mollie or his cubs. If Ghilt had loved him he would have stayed.

Though the thought of cubs – his cubs – terrified him beyond reason, one question burned in his mind. How could he love his own cubs when his father never loved him?
