I think we all know this by now (or most of us do), but there's a small faction of the fandom that likes to look at Gensokyo on the grimdark side.
Remilia actually attacks people at night to drink blood (and in quite the detail), youkai do eat humans, and many other things. I think ZUN stated that Gensokyo is canonically a cheery and calm place, but my memories might be fading again.
Do you prefer happy Gensokyo or grimdark? What do you like and dislike, etc.?

I enjoy both, but if I had to choose then I prefer the calm and cheery Gensokyo that ZUN intended.
I just like how light hearted everything is, it puts me at ease.
It is nice to see it with some darker twist though, such as the examples you described.
I am a bit of a guro fan after all.

Cheery Gensokyo, but only because a grim Gensokyo would suffer at the hands of Yuka and there wouldn't be very many people left.

I prefer the lighthearted Gensokyo, because it's all kinds of stupid fun. Art and music wise though, I love me some dark and creepy stuff. I think my roommates started associating me with weird stuff and slightly avoiding me the minute they came back and I had a darker remix of Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye playing. X3

WOW at that amazing poll. Especially the last two options. This might take a while to decide.
So anyway, I like the idea of Gensokyo normally being very calm and cheerful, but when it gets dark, it gets really dark, and sometimes stays that way for a good while.
Really though, the whole thing about youkai feeding on humans and such does in fact happen anyway, it just isn't focused on.

I'm for light hearted Gensokyo too. It's a lot more fun that way, plus, most of the dark Gensokyo doujins are too angsty and cliche.
But I wish to disagree with your poll, Alice was never an incompetent magician! Not even as a child!

I think Kratos has something to say abot that, i'll let him say it. xD As in, her magic sucks and it's very niche-ish, like Alice's puppeteer magic. Marisa is a human witch, but her magic is very wide-ranged (hence why she can steal attacks in the first place) and is extremely powerful for a human. So I used the Opposite Day scenario to reverse that. @Pirra: Alice wasn't incompetent back when she was in Makai, but recall that this was the only time she had used the open Grimoire of Alice, so...
