Endless days drifted by for Izumi with all the same flavor, the same feel to them. For her, at least, very little ever seemed to change. Part of that might be because of the way she kept herself out of the main flow of the pride and the lives there, away from friends or enemies, from things that would distract her from her day-dreaming. She spent so much time doing it, that it was almost more real to her than the real world. She had her made-up friends and companions, her adventures in her mind... the real world didn't have any of that.

Not that she'd have wanted to have an adventure in real life... that took a bit more effort than she was willing to give. Izumi was happy enough to sit on the bank of the river, in a nice little patch of sunlight, and dream about where the river went, what it saw and what things might hide shyly in the shadows under the banks. It brought a small, soft smile to her face and she hummed softly under her breath, adding her own music to the soothing atmosphere.

She was blue. Kissy grew up knowing only yellows, reds, oranges, blacks, whites, grays and greens. To think that a lioness could be blue – blue like a hummingbird, blue like a shimmering beetle – Kissy could hardly contain herself. She grinned and danced on her little paws. Hidden in the shadows, her dark body made her more difficult to spot than a brown speckled moth hiding on a tree trunk. She wished that she could stand-out like that!

Mere seconds after spotting the lioness Kissy bounded out of the jungle where she had been playing and ambled straight up to her, even though the blue lioness was obviously of higher rank. Kissy wasn’t afraid of higher ranking lions. One of her sisters was a ghast and her grandmother was a rawal. They never picked on her or gave her any reason to fear lions of many colors. In fact she adored them. They were fun to look at and fun to be around.

Catching her breath, Kissy spouted, “Hi! My name is Kissy, what’s your’s? I really love your coat!”

The sudden voice startled Izumi out of her mental wandering and she blinked a few times to bring herself back, looking down at the black cub that had suddenly appeared beside her.

"Oh! Um, Hello there." She said, feeling suddenly awkward. She... wasn't much used to cubs, and frankly didn't know how to even talk to one. Should she dumb things down to be better understood, or treat her like an adult? Was there some kind of rule for that or something? The fact that the cub was shikari-i didn't even cross her mind, nor the fact that she herself was a higher ranked gasht. It was rare, in her expirience, to meet someone lower on the totem pole. Most of her family was Rawal ranked, and she was far too used to being the one lower. Nor did the black startle her, as her own blue did for the cub. She'd met a black lioness before, and her own clan was mostly blues... Infact, this cub reminded her, just a little, of that black girl, Mawu.

"My name's Izumi. And, um... thanks." She stuttered, still trying to catch up with reality. It never was easy for her. "I... like yours too. Black is a, um, pretty color." A truthful statement, at least. It might lack any color at all, but black was a... soothing sort of color. After all, the night held many blacks, and as long as one knew what was around you, it wasn't scary in the darkness. Some of the best dens and hiding places were black inside... With an effort, Izumi pulled herself back from getting lost in her dreaming again, focusing in on the eager cub before her.

"Thank you. I like black, too. My mama's black and so are two of my sisters but they all have more colors than me, which is okay because I just like to look at colors. But sometimes I want to be colorful, too. Then I just put flowers in my mane. You got some black, too. On your nose!" she giggled. Kissy was an enthusastic little cub. She loved to talk to everyone regardless of rank. Having a rawal for a grandmother and a ghast for a sister made her comfortable with others; no one in her family ever criticized her for her color, even though she knew what it meant. Their love was all that mattered.

"It's nice to meet you, Izumi. I never seen a blue lioness before. Everybody in my family is yellow or red or orange or sometimes black."

Izumi covered her nose self-consciously before she smiled, dropping her paw again.

The cub was rather cute, with the way she prattled on. It was a little confusing though, hard to really follow what she was going on about. Izumi thought about her own family and their range of colors... of the way such a simple thing as the brightness of a single color could determine your rank. Those with a color other than blue didn't have such a problem, of course, but the darkness of her paws and the white of her mane only showed how unworthy Izumi herself was....

She shook off the depressed feeling and smiled at the cub.

"My family is mostly blue, but we're also pink and purple." She said softly, blinking her large green eyes. "You probably just haven't see us because you're still so little. Its hard to meet everyone when you have to be watched all the time."

“Mama doesn’t watch me all the time. She lets me be inda-independent.” Kissy grinned, proud of her big word.

“She says I can go anywhere I want so long as I don’t get too far from our clan so I try to stay close by. I’m kinda hard to watch cause I’m so dark. When I go into the jungle I just disappear! When I was little mama said I turned invisible. That’s just a funny joke, but for a while I thought I really could. Just think how cool that would be.” She felt much older and wiser now that she knew what her mother really meant by turning invisible.

Kissy held her head high. “I bet you could turn invisible, too! Cause you got dark spots on your back. But you couldn’t do it as well as me.”

The blue lioness couldn't help but giggle at that thought.

Turn invisible? That'd really be a trick! She could hide and not be spotted if she didn't want to be. Sneak up on prey so they didn't know she was coming. Spy on others and learn all sorts of secrets. It was quite a tempting thought and Izumi had to resist daydreaming again. The cub was still here after all!

She giggled as she ducked her head. "Oh, I'm sure you're quite fine at that!" She said, smiling brightly. "I think it'd be fun to disappear! Think of all the stuff you could do! Dark coats are good for that though, especially at night when everything else is dark too." She shook her head, thinking about it. She almost half wished now she'd been born darker, just to try it out!

Ah well... she could no more change her coat than she could the laws of the pride that made her lower ranked than her siblings, and higher than this cute little girl cub. At least they hadn't been born male, right?

"Omigosh this one time, when I was little, I was playing hide-and-seek Onalim's my older sister. She's bright yellow like a pretty flower but she's got lots of white on her from our dad, who is a no good rogue by the way, on her so she's a shirkar-i like me - anyway, Onalim was it, and I was hiding, and she was looking right at me but she didn't see me at all! She found all our other siblings but she still couldn't find me! She was calling my name, she sounded so scared. Later she said she was worried about me but I think she just didn't wanna get in trouble with mom." Kissy giggled.

"Finally she got Kim - Kim's my other yellow sister, but she's a ghast - she got her to help and Kim sniffed me out, cause she's got a really good nose. My sisters were mad but I thought it was funny. While I was hiding I overheard them talking and one of them said she was gonna kill me when they found me, but I know she didn't mean it. It was so funny!"

Izumi couldn't help but stare as the cub prattled on about a game of hide-and-seek, her mind a little overwhelmed by the rush of words and the images they called up in her mind. Her brow wrinkled as she struggled to follow along, finding at the end that she was no closer to understanding than when she'd started.

The blue lioness sighed as she rubbed her face with a paw, shaking her head lightly. "That does sound funny, I guess." She said, so Kissy wouldn't be upset that she couldn't follow along. She tried to smile, hoping she wouldn't guess.

"I like to play with my sisters too, but... we're a little too old for playing now, I guess. Everyone's busy doing grown up things, like hunting and talking to boys." She shrugged as she smiled shyly.

"But boys aren't good for anything! Why would they want to talk to them?" Except for, well, that one. Kissy wasn't too clear on how baby making worked except that it usually involved a girl and a boy. Still, she would rather not have to talk to a boy just to have cubs. Maybe she could adopt instead! Kissy grinned to herself.

Before Izumi could answer, Kissy thought she heard someone calling her name. She looked over her shoulder. She turned back to the blue female, looking a little disappointed. "I think my mom's calling me... I better go." As she bounded off, she called back, "It was nice talking to you Izumi! I hope I can see you again!"
