Salvia divinorum, Diviner's Sage, Seer's Sage, whatever you want to call it. Have any of you had experience with using salvia, either in recreational or spiritual pursuits? I'm considering experimenting with salvia as an aid to out of body experience or astral projection, but I'm doing lots of research about the topic before I commit to it. So thoughts, opinions, experiences, why I shouldn't do it, etc. would be much appreciated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvia_divinorum

I say do it. But have someone cool there for your first time, in case you freak out. It only lasts about 5-10 minutes, but if you freak out, those could be very long minutes.
It is my opinion that entheogens can definitely have a place in the Occult, if you want them to be. A lot of pagans will tell you that you are only fooling yourself into doing something productive while using an entheogen. Don't listen to them. Shamans have been using Yopo since before Gerald Gardner was a sparkle in his fathers eyes.
You're probably going to get a lot of replies saying "Nooo, Obscurus, Don't do it. You don't need drugs." And they are right. You don't necessarily need drugs. You could spend years and years trying to be able to put yourself in a state of trance similar to that experienced on an entheogen, or you can cut out the middleman. I see no reason why you shouldn't.
Salvia Divinorum could very well be the tool you need to get you into an OBE.
It is my opinion that no tool should be off-limits, so long as you cause no harm with it (I doubt sacrificing babies would help with astral travel anyway ^_~)

Yes, yes, yes. Entheogens are perfect for out of body experiences or inner travelling, any travelling really. I have been trying to get my hands on some Salvia but I haven't found any yet. Instead I have a flying ointment that I have created made from Wormwood, Mugwort, Ciquefoil and a hint of Nutmeg. It works wonders, let me tell you.
But one must still be careful and not become hooked on it. And Salvia does make you freak if you are not careful but you should be able to control it if you do it well.
I once did with the Mary Jane (never doing that again BTW) and wow did I sink deep into myself and then my conscious took over and freaked out XD
Good times.
Wine is also another excellent entheogen. Or any alcohol. I have a recipe for Absinthe and I want to make eventually.

I agree that entheogens should not be off limits, but I'd much rather be able to do this on my own without relying on a substance. My goal is to learn to astral project or go out of body when I want, not just to have an excellent trip.
But I've been wrestling with the societal stigmas of hallucinogen use, as well as the opinions of those close to me, and aside from that I'm not sure I'm comfortable with it yet. I've decided to more seriously try binaural tracks to help with trance.
Trance doesn't seem to be my problem, I just don't really have any idea what I'm doing as far as "getting out" or whatever you want to call it.

They outlawed Salvia here in VA, sadly.
I would say first try salvia recreationally, so you know how it effects you, and how it'll make you feel, with someone there to be your "sitter" (to calm you down in case you freak out).
And if you think your up to going it alone, go for it.
That way you'll have a better idea of what an OBE feels like, and you'll know what you are trying to accomplish.

*shrug* I generally feel that, if you're training to do something, using a crutch carries the danger of only learning how to do it *with* the crutch. I'd say just keep working on it your own self, and if you're really having trouble getting the in-body feel of how to project, then use the stuff as a teaching aid - and pay attention to how your body feels different while you're on it. If you remember it, it'll be easier to recreate the feeling on your own later.

I personally do not enjoy the trip I get from salvia. It is intense and it puts everything into too much perspective, I prefer to use other hallucinogens for religious reasons.

Zurine I personally do not enjoy the trip I get from salvia. It is intense and it puts everything into too much perspective, I prefer to use other hallucinogens for religious reasons. Im not fond of the trip either and it always leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. If its leagal in your state you can find it at head shops. I only used it recriationaly a couple of times since i can accomplish an OBE on my own and i worry about using anything like this to induce them less i become dependant on it for an OBE but thats my own fear. I would recomend a sitter for first time use if you can find someone you trust to do it, incase you do have a bad trip they can help to calm you down get you water or w/e. I wouldnt recomend trying to walk around i know i had a very difficult time walking after i smoked some. If you are going to use it find a dim comfy place to lie down and just relax. =)

Arcanist Angus I once did with the Mary Jane (never doing that again BTW) and wow did I sink deep into myself and then my conscious took over and freaked out XD Really? Weed is my favorite entheogen (and recreational drug), closely followed by shrooms. I've never freaked out from just weed though. I have always wanted to try DMT out, for experimental purposes. I've heard it's basically like loading the universe into a cannon and firing it at your head. Sounds like good fun to me. EDIT: Just keep in mind that an entheogen is a TOOL, just like your Athame and your candles. It helps you to get to that state. Don't get pulled into the belief that you need an entheogen to do this. Then again, i don't see why you wouldn't use this tool if it's available. I mean, it's not like you are going to try to astral project randomly in public.

I don't like salvia, or the way it makes me feel. I'm sure it will send you to the outer limits of cultural reality when you do decide to try it, but be careful. I'd suggest a trip sitter.
I've had more changing experiences with marijuana, mushrooms, and dmt. I don't suggest trying any of it unless you're mentally prepared.
Take care with your salvia X, I know I have to take a higher dose of anything, some people are more sensitive.

hi, I haven't been here in ages, but wanted to put my 2 cents in on this discussion. I've never tried Salvia, but I've used Marijuana, LSD, Mushrooms, DMT, Ecstasy, Peyote and probably a few others that I can't remember. the best OBE's were not from a substance but through a trance from a friend. As far as the substances go, I find Marijuana to be the gentlest, followed by shrooms. Peyote is harsh, it just throws you right out there, and leaves you scrambling for handholds.

I presume I'm the only one who uses pipe tobacco sparingly in order to sustain a conciousness-shifting nicotine high. It's one of my favorites for praying at the altar, or writing meaningful poetry, though.
As for salvia I have a bag of it sitting in my drawer of many things, as I've contemplated an inner journey, but am not stupid enough to attempt such without a sitter, and I have no one I'd trust to sit me through such an event. Also in my state it's legal, so I got it at the magic shoppe I got my sweet ceremonial dagger from.

I have a friend who has green tobacco (I'm not sure of the exact name) that he uses for ceremony. It has a very high nicotine content that will throw you on your a**.

I haven't tried Salvia yet, and I think I'd only be saying things that would point to things you've probably found online. So the only real contribution I kind of have is an online psychedelic guide. I don't recall this having anything about salvia, but it seems related enough to share with anyone who wants it. The Essential Psychedelic Guide by D.M. Turner
