I guess I can say I'm a decent marcher but going backwards is hell for me. On the 6 to 5 strides ( I believe? correct me if I'm wrong..) I have to take BIG steps, and me being short and all, I mess up, I don't end up where I'm suppose to end up and like, AHH! Any help on those who have done it for a while...?? Please?

Marching backwards at a 6 to 5 is horrible. D= I can't really do it too well, but I'm starting to get better. I think what's helping me is pushing against the ground on each step as hard as I can...I don't know how tall you are, though. Have you tried talking to your director or marching staff to see if it's possible for you to bend your knees (kind of like jazz running backwards)? I had to do that to make it to a set last year.

Use the straight knee stride on the platforms of your feet. Also squeeze those abs and butt muscles! It'll greatly help you get where you are going smile

It sucks because I have to be both on tippie toes and not bend my knees but I think I'm getting there..:l But I find it impossible, I'm pretty sure they wont let me..but thanks. :]

Are you flat-footed? If you have arched feet like me, only march on the flat part on the front of your feet. You're still elavated and able to march more easily that way.

I am flat footed...is that a problem? No, actually. sweatdrop As long as you're marching on your toes and the ball of your foot, you should be fine.

Personally, I would have to say that I dislike 4 to 5 backwards even more...especially when we have to march on eighth notes. (Sometimes I think my band director really hates the woodwinds. ^^;; )
But your technique matters a lot in the advice we can give. Do you stay on your toes through the entire move or do you roll through your steps like a backwards roll step? I did the first in high school and then switched to the second once I got to college. If you roll through them then you should focus largly on really pushing off with the heel on each step. It becomes more comfortable as you practice it. Anyway, either way that you do it, I would say the biggest thing you can do is lift your weight. Stand in your attention position and feel yourself lift all the weight out of your hips. You'll feel heavier in the chest and a lot lighter around your hips. This will allow you to move faster and easier, especially with big steps since it helps with your balance. Your posture is better too. =)
Also, be sure to lower your center of gravity. If you get your body lower to the ground, you can stretch your legs further. Be sure that you keep pulling your weight out of your hips though. You have to try to be as tall as possible even when you're lowering your center of gravity to get those bigger steps.
