Do you think that breaking the fourth wall is an over used littery tool? It seems to me that it is as far as fan fictions go. Maybe this is because the author sees it as a show thats the way he reflects the characters?

"breaking the fourth wall" is when the characters become aware that they are charactrs usually by referring to the story it's self. Example:

Bob Everyman ran for his life saying "Oh man, I hope I get to stop running by the next page! This things been chasing me since chapter 7!"

get it? It's also like when cartoon characters talk to the screen.

I guess there are times when it can get annoying. But I've also seen it used in some really creative ways (comic books, Stranger than Fiction with Will Ferrell). I think it can be used in some neat ways, if dont correctly, of course. Personally, my characters are very real to me - so I would never break it myself (well, I guess I should never say never, huh?), but I do like when some other authors do it.

It forces the ethos (Ethos=Credibility, Your vocab of the day) of the author to plummet, because they are making a mockery of their own writing. I admit, when I first came across it, it was funny. Not any more, it is now just annoying.

I don't see it too much, actually, so I like it every once and a while. Like every once and a while in the original Pokemon seasons, Team Rocket broke the 4th wall, but no one else did. It was cool then. (p.s. I love Team Rocket)

I do remember that (James was so cute ^^.) and I think it was that which boomed fan fiction fourth wall breaking. It was okay when the original show did it, because then it was original or if it wasn't, no one knew about it. It just became too common from there. Anyone agree? Disagree?

Agree. On two counts. 1) It became too common after that. 2) James was so cute. ^^ I only watched Pokemon for Team Rocket.

I think what's killing fourth wall breaking as a writer's tool is that not only is it being used all the time, especially in fanfiction, but that it's used in a blatant way. I like when the author uses it in subtle ways, like an Easter egg in TV shows or movies where you might catch a glimpse of the fourth wall being broken by a poster or book title being shown briefly, or in novels and fanfiction where a little comment that seems to have no importance gives a hint of the character maybe knowing what they really are.

I agree, it is over used. For instance, they decided to use in the stupid show Chowder. That was just horrible. Although it can be really funny in some cases.

Most of the CN cartoons are stupid. That is just a side comment. I have no patience for the new shows. Their use of it is just disrespectful to whoever is watching it.

I don't mind so much if it's a running gag(A joke used over and over in the same show) As long as the show is chiefly comedy, like Dule Masters.

The broke the forth wall all the time but it was part of the funniness of the show.

Like "Cool, split screen!" and the made a lot of pop culture references "What a big tree, I wonder if elves are making cookies inside?"

and one time the game up to a door and there was ominous music, and the bad guy(girl) really WAS behind the door, playing it on a keyboard.

Ugh! I hate Chowder! It's stupid. And The Misadventures of Flapjack.

I don't particularly find it annoying. I don't come across it very often...

Since this is a writing forum, I will talk about breaking the fourth wall in literature - not television, which I do not watch...because it is all stupid.
I think it is all about content.
Would Shakespeare or Hemmingway break the fourth wall? No, and they shouldn't.
But in a manga series, or in a comic book - it's all about entertainment and breaking the fourth wall is entertaining.
As long as it fits in with the content of the material, I am perfectly fine with it. (Besides, it includes the reader in the story - which is something we should all strive to do, in however way we can.)

I think breaking the fourth wall can be used... but in a subtle way.

However, if it's used as a major plot device or over-used as a comedic tool then it becomes lame.

It's as if the writer doesn't have any original ideas.
