Contacts
Post One: Introduction and Index

This thread is all about the Gaia contact items. Here you will find a brief explanation of what they are, lists of the layers each contact is found on and some layering tricks.

This thread, like most threads in this guide, is currently under construction.

Please read This guide is currently out of date. Most of the contacts on the 1st layer were shifted up to the 2nd layer. This also means that most contacts now layer with the masterpieces base. I will update the list when I can.

Contacts
Post Two:

This is a basic introduction to Gaia contact items. You can skip this post if you already know how contacts work on Gaia.

• • What are contacts?

Gaia contacts are just like real life contacts. No, your avatar doesn't need them to see better, but they do change eye color. In real life, you can change your eye color by wearing green contacts on top of blue eyes. When you take out the contacts, your eyes are still blue. Same thing on Gaia. You can change the look of your avatar's eyes without actually changing the eyes on your actual base. Unlike real life, Gaia contacts will change the shape of the eyes along with the color. What shape or color? Well that depends on which contacts you buy.

There are many, many contacts to choose from. Most contacts come as one pose from an item full of many poses. Use [tektek] for a fast way to view all of the contacts in one place.

• • Why use contacts?

When choosing eyes, keep your theme in mind. If you're trying to make a matching avatar, use eyes that match your color scheme. If your goal is to look cute, use cute eyes. If your goal is to look evil, use evil eyes. Match your avatar's expression to your goal. Eyes can make or break that expression.

When choosing eyes, you have two options. You can either change your avatar's actual eyes by going to the Salon, or you can equip a pair of contacts.
(Don't forget glasses and masks. You can always hide your avatar's eyes if you don't want to change them.)

You don't need contacts in order to change your avatar's eye style and/or color. [Salon Durem] has a wide variety of eye styles and colors to choose from. Buy a new pair of eyes and they'll be part of your avatar's face within minutes.

Downside? Salon eyes replace your avatar's actual eyes. The eyes in the salon are not items. If you want your old eyes back, you'll have to buy them back from the Salon. With contacts, you can equip and unequip the item all you want and still keep your avatar's base eyes.

Yes, the salon eyes are rather cheap while contacts are often expensive.
Say you want to change your eyes a lot. Through the salon, you must pay gold each time you change your eyes. That gold adds up.
Contacts are usually expensive since they aren't found in the gold shops. However, once you own the item, you don't have to pay any more gold to use them. It's cheaper in the long run.

If you change your outfit a lot, buy lots of contacts. If you don't change your avatar often, stick to the salon eyes or pair of contacts that are perfect for it. Don't buy lots of contacts that you won't use. You might as well use that gold on items that you will use.

Still, this all boils down to your overall goal of theme and expression. If Salon eyes suit your need, use them. If contacts suit your need, use them.

Contacts
Post Three: Contacts Layers

• • Overview
  • Contacts are items that you can equip to change the look of your avatar's eyes. Contacts equip over your avatar's eyes and make your avatar's eyes disappear.
  • Not all contacts equip on the same layer. Some contacts will equip over other contacts. When they do, the contacts underneath disappear. However, if the contacts come with a "background," you can do some special layering. This topic is discussed further in post five****.
  • All contacts layer under eyepatches, masks, glasses, etc. except for one. The Oculus Mythica (Cyclops Eye) equips above eyepatches and under glasses.

I apologize if my list is not up to date. The Gaia artists randomly change item layering without giving official announcements. If your tests show that I have contacts listed on the wrong layer, please tell me!
This is usually good news. :} Contacts on the First Layer often get bumped up to the Second Layer.

For lack of official layer names, I made up my own.

Contacts are listed alphabetically by the names of the items they're found in. When in doubt, use "ctrl F" and type in a key word to find a specific item.

LIST UNDER CONSTRUCTION

• • Layer Zero
This just gives us a place to start. Consider this layer to be your avatar's eyes. [Salon Durem] has lots of eyes to choose from. You must pay gold or cash each time you want to change your eyes. Eyes are not items. They are not found in your inventory, they are part of your avatar.

Kottan Bell (Eyes) <--- The contacts from the Kottan Bell actually layer under First Contacts. If you try to equip them with the masterpieces base, the contacts will layer under the skin as if they aren't even there.
Pink Heart Chocolate Cake (Chocolate on Your Face) <-- These eyes actually should be on layer -1. They layer below the Kottan Bell contacts.
White Daruma Doll (Eyes of Completion) <-- Appear on low layer, but also unequip Second Contacts.

• • First Contacts
These contacts equip over your avatar's eyes and make the eyes disappear. Most of the older contacts are on this layer since this used to be the standard contacts layer.

Contacts
Post Four: Contacts and Special Skins

Skins are items you can equip that change your avatar's skin tone or even the shape of your avatar's body. You can also equip mouth items and contact items with skins to further customize your avatar. However, some skin items pose a challenge since they come with built in eyes. If you're a master of layering, you can equip certain contacts with those skins for a truly unique combo.

Explanation of the layering:
As you know, you cannot wear two items that equip on the same layer. You cannot equip tundra boots and flame shoes at the same time since they're both on the same shoe layer. Same goes with contacts. If two contacts are on the same layer, you can only wear one of them at a time.

If skins come with built in contacts, you must also treat the skins like contacts. This means that some contacts will unequip the skin while other contacts will layer with the skin.
Also, some skins have eyes that are just drawn into the skin. You'd treat those skins just like they don't have eyes. If you equip contacts with them, you still would want to find contacts that cover the drawn on eyes or else the combo might look odd.

• • Masterpieces David Skin Plus Contacts

[Marketplace Link to Masterpieces]
The Masterpieces Monthly Collectible comes with two skin poses. Both poses are the same skin, one just gives you a hair option. Both skins come with eyes and a mouth. These eyes aren't just drawings on the base. The eyes can be treated just like contacts that are on the First Contacts layer.

The David skin is very useful. It's a much cheaper alternative to White Body Dye. The downside is that it comes with the large grey/white eyes. Certain contacts can equip over (and remove) those eyes. Your avatar will look like it's wearing White Body Dye at a much cheaper cost.

The David Skin can essentially be treated like a pair of First Contacts.
If you equip the David Skin and then equip a pair of First Contacts, the First Contacts will remove the David Skin.

Here's all you need to know:
Refer to the lists in the Third Post. The David Skin comes with a built-in pair of First Contacts.
Layer Zero items equip under the skin. (Looks as if they aren't even equipped)
First Contacts unequip the skin. You cannot wear any of the First Contacts with the David Skin.
Everything from the Second Contacts, Third Contacts, Fourth Contacts and above will equip with the skin. The David eyes will be removed from underneath, leaving no shadows.

• • Alien Armorskin Plus Contacts

[Marketplace Link to Alien Armorskin]
Alien Armorskin is an item that can be made from a zOMG recipe. It comes with four different alien skin poses. Two poses come with built-in eyes. These are the main pose and the Alien Skin (Full Blades) pose.

The contacts on those two poses can be considered to be First Contacts. Alien Skin... First Contact... there's a joke in there somewhere. ;]
Even though the eyes are considered to be First Contacts, they will NOT disappear when other contacts are equipped on top of them. You will have to use contacts that match well with the shape of the skin and hide the eyes below. An example of eyes that match up well are the Bad Moon lupine eyes.

All you need to know:
Refer to the list in the Third Post. The Alien Armorskin main pose and Full Blades pose come with built-in First Contacts.
Layer Zero equips below the skin.
First Contacts unequip the skin.
Second Contacts, Third Contacts and above will equip over the skin. The eyes on the skin do not disappear from underneath, so be sure to use contacts that cover the alien skin eyes.

• • Everyone's Reprise Plus Contacts

[Marketplace Link to Everyone's Reprise]
Everyone's Reprise is an item found in multiple RIGs. You'll have to go look up other lists to see which RIGs you'd have a slim chance of obtaining the item from. It's not rare, but you're not guaranteed to get it either. Basically, you find this item in the marketplace.

Everyone's Reprise is an item that comes with an odd skin. When you equip it, your eyes disappear. You can equip lots of contacts with it, but they'll disappear also.

The Everyone's Reprise skin can be a cheaper alternative to Black Body Dye. However, it's lighter in shade and much trickier to equip eyes with.

All you need to know:
Refer to the list in the Third Post. Everyone's Reprise can be considered to be on the First Contact layer, but also hides other contacts.
Layer Zero eyes are hidden.
First Contacts cannot be worn with Everyone's Reprise and will unequip the skin.
Second Contacts... will behave in two ways. They will either unequip the skin or will layer underneath the skin as if they aren't there. In other words, they're useless.
Third Contacts will layer over Everyone's Reprise skin.
Fourth Contacts will unequip Everyone's Reprise skin.
Fifth Contacts will equip over ER's skin.
Sixth Contacts will unequip ER's skin.
Seventh Contacts will unequip ER's skin.

Contacts
Post Five: Contacts with Backgrounds

• • Layering Fun with Contacts that Have Backgrounds {No Longer Possible}

I've done some testing and this "trick" no longer works. This section will be left here just in case layering changes again in the future and some of you guys discover a possible combination.

This trick requires contacts to equip on separate layers. Most contacts now fall on the same layer.
In the past, contacts were on many separate layers. Contacts on higher layers could be equipped with contacts on layers below them. The combinations went unnoticed because only the contacts on the upper layer were visible. The contacts on the lower layer would disappear from view even though they were equipped. However, if the lower contacts had a background, the background was often still visible.
With this trick, people could use the background of one contact, but have eyes from another contact.

Below are some examples of what used to be possible. Gaia layering changes all the time. Perhaps it will be possible again in the future.

Examples of Contacts with Backgrounds:
Assorted Contact Lens Set (Demon Contact Lens)
Inari's Beads (Kitsunetsuki no Me)
Oculus Magica (Kira Kira, Pwetty Biwdies, Ice Fairy, Ponies and Rainbows, Twinkle)

Layering Examples
I quickly made some examples. I'm sure you can come up with a better combo for yourself. In each of these examples, I layered a Second Layer Contact over a First Layer Contact. More specifically, the First Layer Contacts used had backgrounds. You no longer see the contacts, but still see the backgrounds.

User Image User Image User Image
Example One: Inari's Beads (Kitsunetsuki no Me), Noel's Gift (Gallus Eyes) Note that this isn't really necessary since the Inari's Beads provides a tattoo option without the eyes anyway.
Example Two: Oculus Magica (Kira Kira), Gogh Reed (Zero Eyes)
Example Three: Oculus Magica (Twinkle), Bad Moon (Green Lupine Eyes)

Post Six: Winks and Gouged Eyes

User Image User Image
Example One: Angelic Manner (Wink)
Example Two: Captain Ara's Nestegg (Gouged-out Eye), Pt.An.sa Embryonic Vial (Eyes)

• • Using Winks and Gouged Eye Items

Until recently, our avatars were unable to wink. There are not many wink contacts available at the moment. I hope the future brings more winks... and more affordable winks too.

We have a couple options for making our avatars wink.
The first way is to use contacts that have built in winks. At the moment, there are only two contacts with built in winks and they both give avatars blue eyes. [Gaia-Tan (Kawaii Wink) and Diapered Egg (Baby Blue Wink)]
The other way is to use a wink contact. The wink contact will layer over other contacts, making one eye wink and leaving the other eye alone. This way your avatar can wink- and choose its eye color.

Another way to have one solitary eye is to hide the other one with a scar. The only pose that does this is Captain Ara's Nestegg (Gouged-Out Eye). Okay, yes, you can also hide single eyes using monocles and eye patches, but this thread is about contacts.

Currently, all of this wink and gouged eye poses fall on the Third Contact layer. What does this mean?
You can equip the winks and gouged eyes over the Zero, First, Second layers. (Problem with gouge: you will still see the eye under the scar if it's on the Second Contact Layer)
You cannot equip a wink with a gouged out eye. They are on the same layer and will unequip each other.
The Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Layer contacts will equip over the winks and gouged eyes. You won't be able to see much of the winks and gouged eyes.

Basically, want to wink? Equip a wink contact with any of the contacts found on the Zero, First, and Second Contacts lists. Please refer to the Third Post for the lists.

Contacts
Post Seven: Contacts with Special Effects

Some eyes might have unexpected layering effects when equipped. This post will list any I've come across. If you found any contacts that behave oddly, please let me know and I'll give you credit for bringing it to my attention. (Do not post in this thread.)

• • The Experiment (Part 6, Ocular Merge)

[Marketplace Link to First Gen. Experiment]
The Experiment was one of the first few Evolving Items. You can find it in the marketplace. The aquarium overseer sometimes gives out the experiment so the sixth generation of the experiment is currently very cheap.

The Ocular Merge pose gives your avatar a whole bunch of little red eyes. Even though there are lots of eyes, they are all found on the First Contact Layer.

This contact removes your avatar's hair.
If you want to wear this item and have hair, you must use a wig. Otherwise, you will be bald.

User Image User Image
Example One: ocular merge contacts
Example Two: ocular merge contacts, Raven Black Dracula Wig

Bald Head
Want to know a neat trick? You can have "normal" eyes and be bald. Just use what you know about layering. The Ocular Merge contact is on the First Contact Layer. This means that any of the contacts on the Second, Third, Fourth layer and above will equip over the Ocular Merge. Not only will they equip over it, but they also remove the red eyes. However, since the Ocular Merge is still equipped, you will be bald.
This trick may become obsolete once we have a bald option from the Salon. We currently do not have any hair styles that will remove all hair and eyebrows from an avatar. This layering trick, however, lets you do that. It's good for you cosplayers out there.

HOWEVER, glitches that result in bald heads are not allowed in the avatar arena. To play it safe, this trick is counted as a glitch. Do not enter the avatar arena with an avatar that uses this trick. You're allowed to wear this combination as long as you don't enter into the avatar arenas with it.

User Image This is an example of the ocular merge contacts paired with contacts on the Second Contact Layer. The items used were The Experiment (Part 6, Ocular Merge) and Noel's Gift (Gallus Eyes).
