I see lots of people saying that they spend gold right away and now they are poor. I have a tip or two and would like to share them with others. Feel free to post your own tips.
STORY TIME!
When I was a noob I LOVED free stuff for some reason so I kept stuff I didn't need such as kung fu panda (yea I know I'm not very old...) and the original skittles stuff. Now i have been saving it for about a year or so. The prices in the market place for this have gone up but I'm waiting for them to be a bit higher to sell them. I'm doing the same thing with my "new" MJ things (I have seven of them...)
Moral: Keep freebies for a few years and then sell them. Noobs like the old freebies(It bakes them look like an old noob)
Another tip: Buy some cash, buy stuff that you don't want and sell them. I sold my unopened monthly collectibles for a good amount.

Home, My Gaia, Shops, Community, World, Games each have onemarket place vs. dream avi
make a dream avi here
and put the items you need into your wishlist/profile/siggy, where ever.
keep the items you're wearing right now
sell everything else on the marketplace,
or if the deal's better, sell back to shops.
(you can do this @ inventory page)
if you REAAALLLYYY want your dream avi, don't buy unnecessary items
buy only the items in your dream avi list.
(dont worry about being a noob for that time being...that's what i did XD) more tips

i think for people who want to earn gold sooner rather than a few years from now, it's good to post in the forums, and start playing the games (fishing, cards, slots etc) that's how I made a lot of my gold back in my day when fishing first came out. Before it one of my most expensive items was only like 10k... fishing is a good place to start.
You can sell your fish no matter what.
Also learning how to use the Exchange and MP to your gain is a good idea.
Always ask older members for advice.
A piece of advice for new members, don't be annoying and beg. Lots of us oldbies hate beggers as we've earned the gold we have on our own too.
Questing and making a quest thread is good too, people like to help out dedicated questers. (I'm too impatient to quest myself... I'll sell an expensive item I have that inflated and buy the item I'm questing for with that gold)
