こんにちわ!
My band only has 3 trombones, so our band director asked if anyone would want to change to that instrument, and I want to! I've played Clarinet for five years [since 5th grade] and I want to learn other instruments! whee But I have a lot of questions, and I'm still kind of unsure if I should because I've never even spoken to those players [and they're all guys gonk ], I'm only friends with Clarinets, a flutist, and a french hornist, and I've never even touched a brass instrument... sweatdrop
So here are my questions! Is a trombone really heavy/ is it tiring to march and play with it? Is it difficult to learn to play? Especially since I only know how to play a clarinet?
Thank you in advance!
...さようなら.

...さようなら. trombone is one of the lightest instruments...my friends is lighter than my clarinet. the reason is because it only has a tube...and that's really not that heavy. the positions will be the hardest for you to learn, especially since you're used to solid positions that don't need to be manipulated to get the note out. as for how difficult it will be to learn, it depends on how well you learn other things...i'm able to play my friends trombone(not extremely well, but i can get the positions sometimes xD). if you want to do it, do it...but it will be hard if you have no one to teach you.

Trombone is actually one of the lightest. It's even lighter than a mellophone. (Or at least mine is) Trombone is easy (says the trombone player) because the positions are so easy. 7th position, then 6th is one halfstep up, 5th is one halfstep up from that, and so forth. The positions will make sense to you, and the music is usually pretty easy.

Is a trombone really heavy/ is it tiring to march and play with it? Don't know about marching, but trombones really aren't very heavy. It just takes a moment when you first start playing to get it in balance, then you should be fine.
Is it difficult to learn to play? Especially since I only know how to play a clarinet? Well, from clarinet to trombone is a bit difficult. Embouschure wise, they are hardly similar. Sometimes it is difficult to get the right spot for the positions, so I suggest practicing with a tuner. If you are off, adjust your slide position until you aren't. If you don't have a tuner(AKA class) just try and adjust to the sounds of the other trombones.

Hahaha, I tried to do the exact same thing in jazz band many years ago... It didn't work for me, but that's because my instructor promised to tutor me and never did.
I don't remember much of my trombone, only that buzzing into that mouthpiece when you're not used to it leaves a mark. 15 minutes of playing trombone = bright red, swollen lips for two days. So...pick it up on a weekend. razz
And after I rented that trombone and everything, my instructor just said, "You're a clarinet player. Don't try to be what you're not." WTF

This is my first year of Trombone. For me, it was pretty easy to learn all the slide positions. Don't worry, you'll do fine. smile
