I/We learned this from our adviser/Filipino teacher when we were discussing an essay(Ang Burgis sa Almusalan)... She asked us what's the difference between Pilipino, Filipino, and Tagalog. We told her, "Pilipino is a person. Filipino and Tagalog are the languages." We also said, "Filipino and Tagalog are the same."
Wrong.
Sa mga Pinoy: If you notice, if you're filling up a form or your biodata, you usually write "Filipino" under the citizenship, right? Well, that's correct, actually... this "Filipino" is the english version of Pilipino. Imagine writing Pilipino in there... praning... xD
Another thing...
Tagalog is the "deeper" version of Filipino [this time the language]. Mga "makakatang" salita in other words... On the other hand, Filipino has words that were derived from other languages... internationally or internally. Example is "tsinelas". It's derived from a word in Chinese... sorry, I forgot the Tagalog translation of it but it's different from tsinelas and rather far from the word... sweatdrop
Majority speak in Filipino. Only a few speak Tagalog. People in Batangas, Alcala(???), and some other places are the few who speak Tagalog. Those in Manila, etc, etc, speak Filipino.
In short: Tagalog is harder than Filipino.
Yosh! Now, don't get confused! (~_^;
