An agnostic is a knowledge claim that one doesn't/cannot know of the existence of a god or gods. There are theistic agnostic. They believe in a god or gods but doesn't/can't know if they exist.
There are atheistic agnostics. They don't believe in a god or gods but doesn't/can't know if they exist.

There are true Agnostics who completely sit on the fence; they cannot even form an opinion on the existence or non-existence of God/gods. Not only that, but they also say it is impossible to know. I understand your distinction, but there is that third option, too. ^_^

I count an agnostic theist as someone who believes there is a high chance there is some kind of higher power but doesn't know, or believes they can't know, what that higher power is.

Really, you just have to ask the person what they mean by it, because that term has been used in different ways. When the term first came to be used in the 1600's, it was just a code word for atheist. Some people who call themselves agnostic bounce back and forth between thinking there are gods and thinking there aren't. Some people mean that it's impossible to know whether there is a god. Some people mean that they just don't know right now. Most people who call themselves agnostic are a majority subset of atheists.

Since a good, descriptive definition is already given, I will give you a quick definition. http://media.photobucket.com/image/agnostic/x3brittany/Agnostic.jpg

Agnostic is the belief there is a god but to not believe in worship to that god.

Agnostics are the ones sitting on the fence peering into both their neighbors yards going, "They both sound okay... But..."

(a)gnosticism is about knowledge. I'm an agnostic when it comes to god. I don't claim knowledge about god's existance / non-existance. (a)theism is about belief. I don't believe in god as it's been presented to me.
I'm an agnostic atheist.

For example, there are certain Agnostics that believe in "The Force" like the Jedi in Star Wars. Certain Agnostics believe in something very similar, but different than "The Force". This other type of Agnostic believes in Energy. Another type of Agnostic is what I am. I believe in the possibility of any Agnostic / Atheist / Theist belief being true. Basically, this is the type of Agnostic that is all about the possibilities. This is probably the truest type of Agnostic, completely on the fence and open to all possibilities.

Being agnostic myself, I can explain it this way.
First of all, let it be known that I don't actually believe something unless there is evidence found for it to be true. Since God as most people know it cannot be proven, I do not believe Him to exist.
That being said, I'm not entirely against the possibility that there is an underlying force to the universe that is similar to deity as most people worship. I don't believe there's any sort of personable God that resembles a human and indeed listens to prayers or causes certain phenomena to happen. If you were to tell me though that there was perhaps a force that had something to do with how protons and electrons bond in atoms and molecules, I'd think it was an excellent idea, even if I don't necessarily believe it to be true. I'd acknowledge the possibility, if that makes sense. I'm not against the possibility of God but I don't believe in it. That help?
