So I have always been eco friendly but I have come to realize that it's really hard to be an ecologist when your family doesn't help out. I also realized that we have five tvs in our house and at dinner time atleast three are on.....atleast five lights in the house are on and water gets left running while we rush around trying to get ready on a regular basis. So recently I've been trying to atleast turn off everything I've turned on and I turn off the main tv when we sit down to dinner. I was wondering how you guys motivate those around you, whether they are your family or friends, to be eco friendly??? I've tried the general information and knowledge but that just doesn't seem to work.

I know how you feel. Sometimes it can be hard to get your family interested. For me, it took YEARS just to get my mom going, and even then, my brother and dad hate it. Sometimes, it just takes time. Be persistent. Thats all I can really tell you.

Don't belittle them. Live by example.

Yeah, that stinks. I know how it is. My mom, brother, and I recycle and compost and don't eat meat, but I'm the only one who turns off lights and TVs and conserves water and stuff like that. TVs are the worst, because if I leave them on the EMF gives me a headache. It's the psychic equivalent of nails on a chalkboard. Eew. But Squazilla makes a good point, too. I've given up on preaching to them, but I continue to live the green life, hoping they'll pick up the habits.

my oldest isn't very conservative. the only way i can convince him that it's a good idea is if it will save him money.

My family is actually very supported of my "green" lifestyle. It takes a little bit of "ok seriously, look what were doing to our planet!" (and some pictures) but its very rewarding when your little brother comes up and asks you "where do i put my pop can? is it recyclable?" Or when your dad actually turns off a hockey game during dinner so he can reduce his footprint. My mom was the first to break off from "dirty living" she planted a garden in our backyard, and rodde her bike anywhere she could to reduce her "carbon footprint". It may take a lot of work to convince them that your isnt always the right way, but it sure pays off to watch them, (and sometimes reward them) reduce reuse recycle!

I'm lucky I grew up in an eco-friendly family (seriously, <3 my family for this) but last year I lived with 3 roommates who were the most wasteful people I ever met. One girl would leave the water running full blast not only as she brushed her teeth, but also as she went to the bathroom, went into her bedroom, and did her makeup. Seriously, almost 10 minutes long sometimes. And it drove me crazy. I can tell you one thing not to do, and that is not to yell at your roommate and completely snap on them for doing such a thing. She even admitted to me afterwards that if I had not apologized for my outburst, she would have wasted even more water just to piss me off. Shows me how much she cares lol.
The best thing to do is teach them calmly and educationally, and be prepared to present facts and ways it can benefit them. It usually goes over better that way. smile

"Orbis terrarum est non altus satis ( ) It's a habit for me, and I just use my own common sense. I mean, if it not in use, turn off. Not only does it help the Earth but your bills as well. Because what you make it sound like, it's not just your family but it is you who can't stay up to being eco-friendly. The world is not high enough" James B.

Yes I agree, Living by example is the best and only thing you can do because you can't ever force anyone to do anything they don't want to. Show them how passionate and serious you are about the environment and hopefully they will follow.
