They put everybody in our drumline in the pit. We had 3 or 4 prominent members quit drumline before band camp even started. That's part of why they took it out. I'm really not sure if this is a good thing or not. On one hand, we have a huge opportunity to have crazy pit stuff going on during the show. We're doing music from the opera Carmen; it's easy to imagine pit specials with such a Latin-y show. On the other hand, we have no drumline. ;__;

Hmm, I can't really imagine it, but I suppose it could work. The only thing I would be not happy about is that I know the school that we play would totally make fun of us. Hopefully that doesn't happen to you.

Yeah, I've seen a band with no drumline, and they were really small, and really good. They kinda had a drumline, though, they marched on the field to a girl playing a snare solo, then she took it off and played auxiliary in the show. (They did have a drum set, though)

I've never seen it done. I imagine it would be very difficult for the band to stay together no matter how much they watch the drum majors. confused

same thing happened in my band this season they're all being put in the pit, and the pit is going to be ON the field, not the sideline, and behind the band so we're going to be marching in front of the pit but.. they're still using the drumlines drums, they're just going to be on their stands
it's weird, but i think it will end up being neat in the end

To you, my friend, I say good luck. I've never seen a show done without a drum line. I think if the field drums are in the pit, it should still count though. If not. . . Woooooow. My director wouldn't march with out at least a nine person line. At my old school, we marched as low as five people. 2 Bass, 1 Snare, 1 Cymbal, and Myself on Tenor.

I have seen it done, not really one of my favorite things though. I personally like the drumline best out of the band even though I am mainly clarinet.
I think that would be kind of difficult because there is a lot of time that I cannot see the DM or we are facing backfield where we listen/watch the drumline so that we stay in tempo.

Ryuusei-Hi I've never seen it done. I imagine it would be very difficult for the band to stay together no matter how much they watch the drum majors. confused That's what I'm thinking. I believe the pit is usually told to play with what they hear, not what they see (drum majors) so they sound right. However, with no drumline to keep the band in time...well, it should be interesting. Other than that, I don't see a problem with having no drumline. You have to work with what you have.

We had a giant pit 2 years ago and it was a blast! We got to do a bunch of cool things and we ranked as one of the top 5 percussion sections at championships even without a drumline.
We also didn't have a drum major and it worked out perfectly.

Don't you lose points during competition for that? I've never seen it. I guess it depends on how big and how good your pit is.

I can't imagin it. I'm afraid our show this year (Cirque Du Soleil) needs alot of pit but we don't have any.
