First of all:

Hey guys. I know I'm not on that much, but kmaritza is and tries to keep me up to date on key things. So more than likely kmaritza will be the one checking up on this thread.

Second of all:

Problem: We are trying to think of meal ideas that do not contain dairy. Why? Zoe has a milk protein allergy (or at least that is what we have determined it to be through trial and error). The major deal with this is that ALMOST all of our meals that we fix are either heavy in cheese or beef (beef usually triggers quite a bit of the same allergies as milk in this type of allergy, though she's ok with a little bit of it). She's ok with just a little butter and a little beef as well, but too much of either one is a bad thing.

We're trying to do different things with chicken, but may need more ideas or ideas with something other than chicken.

Thanks,

Tetravus

Hmmm..... Something non dairy... I suggust you look into some traditional Asian style cooking then if you enjoy their flavors, since I know that they don't use too much dairy. I strongly suggust a good Seaweed soup if you can handle it. It isn't strong, but it might be a bit foreign to you. The soup is good for cleaning the blood and restoring strength.

Hmm, no dairy, and no beef.
Wanting something other than chicken.
How does your household feel about pork products?
Ham, sausage, and roast pork all can make fine substitutes for beef, in a pinch.
I also can't suggest lamb enough, although it is hard to come by.
I know there are cheese-type items that have no actual milk... however, they are of wildly varying quality, and limited availablility.

Stir Frys tend to work just fine without milk products, and they are one of the easiest things to make... pick 3-5 ingredients, fire up the wok, and thro them in with your sauce of choice... I usually skip the soy, and go straight to Teriyaki sauce... or even *gasp* A-1.

There are several fruits (and fruit blends) that can make up the dietary requirements lost by not having milk... And steamed veggies (depending on the veggies, and only so long as they are just lightly steamed, if they don't have a snap anymore, it's too late) can go a long ways to making up for the lack of beef.

I know there is a rice-milk product I have seen available, but have never tried cooking with it, so I can't vouche for it's quality.

Ive never cooked with the rice milk but have drank it and have cooked with soy milk and it works just fine. I am lactose intolerant, though it seems this allergy is worse as i can have some milk products in small doses. I second the stirfry idea and the lamb, i love lamb and have found shopping at Sams they seem to have better deals on lamb. Also i dont know if she eats fish yet, but im a big fan of seafoods of all types

...Also i dont know if she eats fish yet...
Actually, Zoe just eats breastmilk right now. She's only 7.5 weeks old right now. biggrin

I have to stay away from the dairy products right now because she seems to have problems when I eat them. I haven't tried soy milk yet because some babies who have problems with dairy also have problems with soy. I don't know if Zoe will or not, but I'm a bit hesitant to try because her tummy hurt her so much when I was eating dairy. I might try rice milk.

I'm not a big fish eater. I don't really care for much seafood. About the only way I like seafood is fried, and that's not exactly healthy. xd

Asian foods and stir fries sound like good ideas. I've never stir fried anything, but I seem to like it okay when other people do.

Does anyone know of a good ice cream/sherbet type dessert that doesn't use milk?

Thanks for the ideas so far! Keep 'em coming! I'm really missing cooking with milk, cheese, and other dairy products.

There's this milk called "Mootopia" here that is a little bit expensive, but it's supposed to taste just AWESOME and is lactose free.

Actually, Sorbet should be the non-dairy replacement for Ice Creame.
It is made using fruit juices or *shudder* water as the base, instead of milk.
Most will be labelled as non-dairy (at least in California...), when in doubt ask the attendant sat the grocery store, they should be able to point you to the non-dairy frozen goodies.

Luna, I'm pretty sure it's the milk proteins that Zoe has an intolerance to instead of the lactose so unless the Mootopia is not actually dairy, it wouldn't work. sad Thanks for the suggestion though.

Fiddlers Green, I looked up sherbet and sorbet. You are right, sorbet is what I'm looking for. It is fruit juice based while sherbet is dairy based. Now I just need to find someplace that carries sorbet. Most grocery stores around here mostly carry sherbet.

Actually, I just found a chocolate sorbet recipe. I don't know how good it is, but it might be something for me to try when I have access to an ice cream maker.

Kmaritza, I think I'll try putting that together once the weather warms enough here for it to be suitable to have frozen treats.

Also, I know you already know this, but for anyone else, Dark Chocolate is usually safe for those who aren't allowed milk... however, some versions incorporate milk... just less than milk chocolate. 3nodding

I suggest you look at "raw food" diets. Verity, flavor, no cooking and usually very well balanced.

Also, how do you feel about wild game? Nothing beats a good elk steak.

It is lactose free! From what I've heard it's just awesome and surprisingly good. Being lactose intolerant myself, I've recently found taking lactase pills REALLY help, but I know since she's a wee baby, it's probably not an option just yet. I don't know what kind of grocery stores you get where you are, but mootopia I've heard wonderful things about.

OH and I know for a fact that Haagen Daas makes a sorbet in the little pint sizes.

somewhere long the lines id missed the her being still a weebaby bit! doh! of course shes noteating fish..lol. another suggestion for the ice cream type things is itallian ice if you can get it where you are.. if i have a choice ill take that ovr ice cream anyday..cuz i dont get sick with the italian ice! though i have tried the lactose free ice creams, they are ok. but yeah probly she has a protien allergy not lactose. my son had trouble with milk formulas and was ok with the soy though. im glad..... actully i drank 2 gallon of soy milk a day for while i was pregnant with him so i was hoping he would still be ok with the soy. kinda like my desire for peaches and my mom telling me she lived off peaches forawhile when she was preganant with me..lol
