This is the beach where they filmed Nim's Island. I haven't seen the movie, but apparently they superimposed a volcano over the back of the beach.

We had to take a cruise to get to this beach - you can't walk there. I had the most AMAZING shells EVERYWHERE (see next couple of photos!) but you can't take anything away because it's protected and stuff. It was a really beautiful beach. 3nodding

We found a cowrie! It was still living. whee We have a whole box of these at home - Dad's Dad bought a few and I think he used to find them, as well. But it's pretty rare nowadays.

The creature itself is a cowrie, but we also call the shells cowries. I'm not sure exactly what the creature is - some kind of sea snail or mollusc type thing. It's slimy but it retreats into its shell when we pick it up.

i believe that top photo (with your dad's hand?) is a cowrie.

it's really pretty!

maybe it could become a paperweight, once the tenant moves out?

Yep, that's my Dad's hand and that's a cowrie. xp
You aren't allowed to take anything from that beach though. sad

I do the same thing when I go to beaches. I always bring a mask (the kind you usually associate w/ snorkeling, but I never use the snorkel or flippers), and I swim along staring at the seafloor looking for interesting shells and fish and things. I find stuff like that every once in a while, but in the Gulf of Mexico, non-standard shells are rare. 3nodding
