smallest instrument would defiantley be the flute. if you were a percussionist i wouldn't imagine you have to take anything homw with you except sticks. but i wouldn't completely suggest going into the high school band trying to be a percussionist.

Piccolo is the smallest, but one usually starts on flute. I'd suggest clarinet though. It's small, but not as hard as the flute.

I play flute and piccolo, and they are both really small. Flute is complicated for some people because it takes a lot of air, and you shouldn't even think about playing picc until after you have played the flute for a few years. It's almost impossible to get air out of if you can't play flute, they are pretty much the same instrument (and have just about the same fingerings), except picc is smaller, harder, louder, and more high-pitched. If you hate screechy things, I wouldn't reccomend playing it, but it's really fun. But, play flute first.
And clarinet is the easiest of all the instruments to play, and it's small. But needs reeds lol. mrgreen
And trumpet isn't too big, the case can fit on the bus, and it seems pretty easy.

alto sax is somewhat small and portable, granted not as much as the flute or clarinet but that's the first instrument I picked up for my high school years...

side note: Clarinet and alto are basically the same. Alto is a teeny bit harder because it uses just a bit more air. Don't say I am wrong. i played both last year, switching from clainet to alto.

How about instead of asking people what works for them, you find an instrument you like the sound and feel of, and works with you?

If I were taking a class such as that, I'd play French horn. It's now woodwind, so you can't squeak. Or baritone. It's easy, and the baritone parts on most songs are ridiculously easy, except when there are clarinet cues. Just for something easy, I'd say baritone. Just don't march it. It's ungodly heavy.

smallest instroment is flute or picclo. Trumpet can be pretty easy to carry around to. If you chose percussion, all you would need to bring (assuming you play a drum) is sticks, music and a practice pad.

XxVenomForFree Jacob IV Clarinet, fer sure. More guys need to play it anyway D; guys do not need to play that at all My friend plays clarinet, and he's a guy, he's 6 feet tall and weighs like 300. (Granted, he mostly plays bass clarinet. But our BD only has that one bass and doesn't want Ben to march it, because Ben is extremely untrustworthy.)
