At my dads house we have a big ol' yellow lab. He is too lazy to run away. He stay in the yard. Never wondered! We don't have anything to keep him in.
At my moms we have a little, hyper chocolate lab. We keep him in with an electric fence. It goes around the border of our lawn, up into the woods- where most of property is, and around the gardens. I don't like the electric fence very much.

we go out on walks as I do have a garden just seems a shame to only use the yard when where I live has loads of woods and fields all around it.

I don't own dogs, but my mom and friend who lives with us own three of them. They just keep them in with the wooden picket fence we have in out front yard.

ok here's my suggestion, get a sprinkler motion sensor (yes these can be bought easily enough they are often sold as scarecrows ) rig them up around the edges, most dogs highly dislike sudden water jets but it's still a lot kinder than an electric fence. Just an idea mind you.
