Wounded.

God damn it all, she was wounded.

There was a definite thrill in being just that, something primeval and primative. It was the feeling one got when they were being watched, adrenaline rushing through the blood and clouded the eyes with a sense of paranoia, even fear.

Oh, but Aiofe fears nothing -- she has no need, you see. She can hold her own against whatever demons lurk, whatever creatures of shadow she may encounter. It it not uncommon, either, that she come across another of her own kind, hungry and irritable, but never before has she been so caught off guard, so helpless (loathe she admit it), so wounded. It was uncommon that she leave a tiff with another Kalona with more than a few scratches. This, however -- this was completely different. Her shoulder, slashed open and red with dried and fresh blood, and her chest aching from the contact between it and another, shoving, pushing, fighting. It was all she could do to keep from grimacing when she walked or moved her wings.

Yet, despite these, she was satisfied with what she had left him. Her teeth and hooves were still stained with blood and hair, and she could only imagine the pain in his chest, and how badly his hindquarters felt. A shove had shown she meant business; a buck at his legs had shown she would kill him, if he gave her the chance.

And so, both parties had departed, angry looks and feirce words exchanged.

Now, however, the pain was starting to boil over.

She had never really been one to show any weakness. Weakness was, after all, an invitation for anything with an attitude to take a crack at her. Weakness was what attracted the demons and creatures and monsters (she was one of them, wasn't she?), and to attract them was simply not a good idea.

It was for this reason she had left the forest.

It was for this reason that she stood, alone, along the river's edge, debating whether to wade in and clean her would or simply let the blood run off.

The intense heat of the morning had left. Faded away into the cool evening as he stood, alone in the forest. The summer days had forced Lucifer into hiding in the shade of the forest. He wasn't an avid fan of the heat burning down on his back, but who was?

As he trotted along he realized that his throat was feeling rather dry. Like he'd been in a desert for a year or two. The thirst hadn't been that strong at first, but now the pain had forced him to go in search of water of some sort. He'd also been quite hungry too, but that couldn't compare to the burn of the thirst in his throat.

Soon his trot became a run as he searched for a stream, a river, anything that had water in it. Maybe hiding in the forest had been a bad idea after all... Either way he'd find water if it took him the rest of the evening.

It seemed that luck was on his side after all. He could hear the faint rush of water from what he assumed to be a river just ahead. Picking up the pace he ran a little faster, but something was wrong. Something he just couldn't put his hoof on.

Skidding to a stop just along the border of the forest and the sand he finally determined the source of his unease. Blood. There was a Kalona there, shoulder drenched in blood. Had the Kalona gotten into a fight with another? His mother had taught him of how fierce Kalonas were so it'd be hard to rule out that possibility.

Her jaw cracked in a yawn.

Despite the throbbing pain in her shoulder and the fact that she was dying the water red, she still found herself quite content. Despite the fact that she was wounded and vulnerable, she found herself quite relaxed. She couldn't tell you why. Perhaps it was because she had left the stallion with his own wounds, his own to-be-scars, or perhaps because she had walked away alive and (as far as she was concerned) victorious. Whatever the case, she was satisfied.

She stared at the blood as it swirled in the water, entirely uninterested. She held no sanctity in blood - only power. Those who spilled it were the powerful, and those that bled were weak, subservient. Only when two powerful beings came to a head did the struggle begin. To see her own blood was naturally frightening, but her lips twisted into a smile at the thought of the stallion. He was no doubt bleeding so much more, and she hoped, in far more pain. She shifted and inhaled sharply, the dull ache transforming into an explosion of pain, and she hissed softly under her breath as she settled down once again. She knew the pain would only get worse if she left it untreated, but she was not going to go to the Kawani for assistance. Her mouth curled into a thick, disgusted frown at the thought.

Still, there was no sense in letting the wound get infected. Steeling herself, she moved the injured leg forward, once again hissing at the pain, and slowly waded into the water, shivering and twitching when it met and kissed at the open wound. The water was cold and soothing, it slightly biting, and for a while, she remained, her eyes darting from left to right suspiciously. In the water, she was not as fast, and there was no traction with which to leap into the air - an ambush was not only possible, but she highly suspected it.

There.

Just there. She could smell him and hear his labored breathing, just at the edge of the forest, and she was highly dissatisfied that she had not noticed him earlier. Whirling to face him and holding back a snarl of pain, she stared at the Soquili with a fierce expression.

But he... was not what she had expected.

With cloven hooves, much like her own, and furry fetlocks, and a tail like a unicorn, he was much different. The horn caught her attention, and for a moment, she passed him off as some odd, mutated Uni, but he was... scaled? She snorted in surprise, her red eyes widening slightly at the sight. She had never seen a scaled Soquili before. Suddenly, she sneered at him, her teeth glinting. "What?" she asked viciously, watching him cautiously. Did those scales mean he could move more quickly in water? If that were the case, and he was intent on an ambush (a pretty stupid one, letting her see him, if that were the case), she could do nothing but slowly wade towards the shore and sustain whatever damage he did.

How could he put this? Ah yes, he'd always expected them to be cruel, vicious, and intelligent devils, but somehow she didn't strike him as that. Of course he wasn't foolish enough to expect her to be nice judging by her wounds, but he could certainly question her intelligence. Leaving herself in the open, and in water no less when the smell of her blood could be traced about a mile away.

It was the perfect setting for an ambush, not that such thoughts would've passed through his head anyway. Still he couldn't help but look back to make sure that they were alone. What would he have done if some other Soquili decided to take the golden opportunity and attack her? Would he flee or help her? Hopefully it wouldn't come to that.

There was a moment of silence between them as she whipped around to face him. He took that as an opportunity to look her over. The contrast the blood and her subtle markings made on her ebony black pelt was quite a sight, he would've mistaken the blood for an abstract marking too if he hadn't been able to scent it.

He was quite taken back at her attitude to say the least. He hadn't expected to be able to carry on a pleasant conversation with her, but he hadn't expected that either. What was with them and their pride. He was about to respond to her question when he realized it again. The impending death by thirst. That of course was an exaggeration, but speaking would probably worsen the pain.

It was hard to explain what came over him next. Was it just impulse or was he really that reckless. Whether it was either or both he wasn't sure, but he approached her cautiously with one goal in mind. Water. He was aware that him approaching her would be taken as a threat by the Kalona, but he was fairly certain that even she wouldn't be reckless enough to attack him. Not in her current condition of course. He veered off from her and stopped a few tail lengths away from her before bending his head down all the while keeping an eye on her before taking a nice long drink of water.

The water of course had a faint tinge of her blood in it making it rather unappetizing, but at this point he was desperate for water that he didn't care. When he was done with his fill he redirected all his attention at her, taking note of her wound before answering. "Nothing.", he replied with a light snort. "I just wanted some water, but I obviously didn't know that the river was occupied." His Kirin instincts were screaming at him to offer her some assistance, but he wasn't sure if she would accept, or even how she'd react to it.
