So today was my first day in my marching band. I was forced into playing in my high school marching band. I play baritone and I was wondering if anyone one had any tips that would make it easier to hold and carry because it makes my shoulders hurt really bad. Also any tips for memorizing the music? We have three parades this weekend and I'm way nervous because everyone else has had the music for like month and I just got it.

Okay, always remeber to keep it up, it'll hurt alot but it's always good to keep up the endurance. Also, it'd be a good idea to hold it up whenever your practicing at home with it.
Memorizing music is always hard, but repetition is always good. What I do is play through the music infront of me a couple of times and then play it without. It'd also be easy to break up the music into parts and memeorize it measure by measure.

okay i don't play baritone but i am going to say pretty much what meakalilo said, hold it up when you are practicing at home, eventually it will get easier and it won't hurt as much, trust me on that one
as for memorizing music, for me i start memorizing from the end of the peice, measure by measure, i play the last measure, memorize it, then the last two measures and memorize that, then last three and so on and so on...
if that doesn't float your boat, then just break up the music and memorize it peice by peice,
good luck biggrin

if your baritone has the hooks for a strap grab a luggage or duffle bag strap and attach it, put a towel where the strap rests on your shoulder and that will help a little, not all baritones have the loops I know mine did the one year I played it and then my friends didn't, as odd as it sounds along with endurance do some reps with your baritone, it sounds strange but if you build up the tolerance for it, then it wont be as hard to lift and hold, trust me i'm a girl and if you saw me the mere idea of doing reps with a baritone was a laughable affair, but it definilty will help it helped me alot, granted it still will not be a cake walk but it will ease up the pain and stress a bit.....

as for the memorizing the music the universal word we all know it we all love it and we all hate it, practice practice practice, what I always did was try and take a small section at a time and memorize it flip the music over, make sure I could play it then move on, I set goals for myself, making it a challenge for me and just sticking to it, but then again i am stubborn like that, it doesn't always work for everyone, try various things see what works for you, for example make a game out of it, pick out two sections randomize them and play them until you have them memorized, something will eventually work it will just be the matter of finding it and then sticking to it... either way its still is not easy and definitly one of the lamer parts of marching band.

good luck hope I helped a little bit

This is what Choko has to say:

The Baritone:
Don't hate me, but i play Mellophone. (widely acclaimed to be "Freaking light!!")
What helps (with almost everything in marching band) is to make it harder.
put weights on your arms to make the horn heavier, so when it's just the horn, it's lighter (and you have the strength later to keep up those stupid uniform sleeves)
If you're having difficulty with 90 degree slides, hold a 180 degree slide for as long as you can.

Memorizing the music:
Again, don't hate me. I'm one of those smart people that memorizes things fairly quickly.
My advice is to practice a lot, and randomly try playing it without looking. before you take the music out, try playing what you're about to practice.
You have a long time to memorize, so don't worry to much about it.

My boyfriend plays the Baritone. He's drum major this upcoming year though. But i know he always complained about his shoulders because his back was messed up.

It's a heavy instrument to carry. I've held it. I know he just practiced holding up for a while everyday or so. It's just a matter of getting used to the weight.

If it's your first day of marching band....then yeah. It's gonna take some time to get used to.

As for memorizing music. OUr band director breaks it down into small sections. Play each section one at a time and then turn the music over to see what you can remember. It's just repitions and muscle memory really...
I don't think there's an actual like trick to it unless you have a flip folder and lyre.

ok to keep the horn up they say suck it up and deal with it but be sure to slowly work up your indurance at home

and do you learn the whole show in marching at once? NO! so just brake it down into what your learning at that moment memorize slowly

Marching baritone suuuucks, but I love it.
Whatever you do, do not cheat, just try to keep your angle up all the time, it will hurt, but you will build endurance. The weights work too.
Silly mello's thinking your instruments are heavy xD

Baritone is by far the worst instrument to march. I marched it one parade, and quit it forever. (I don't know about euphonium)

But, I play trombone, so I get to hear our baritones complain about it every day. (One baritone player thinks he's on drumline, and was just put on baritone against his will.)
So, keep your horn up, it builds endurance that you're going to need. It WILL hurt. It's supposed to.

Also, lean forward slightly, so put a little bit of strain on your lower back. I didn't do this, and I was lying down for days after the parade. Leaning forward a little bit will hurt MUCH less than leaning back. A few years ago, we had a girl who leaned back because she was so little, and she's had surgery for scoliosis (I think that's what it's called) recently.

As for memorizing music, I just memorize music very easily, so just play it over and over, and eventually you'll remember all of it.
