Have any of you Haven members read Harry Potter in any other language than English? If you have, you would've noticed that the translators have actually changed the names of the characters! How about sharing some of those names here on the Haven?

Here are some of the Norwegian names:

Hogwarts - Galtvort

Hermione Granger - Hermine Grang

Ron Weasley - Ronny Wiltersen

Severus Snape - Severus Slur

Dolores Jane Umbridge - Venke Dolorosa Uffert

Albus Dumbledore - Albus Humlesnurr

Cedric Diggory - Fredrik Djervell

Minerva McGonagall - Minerva McSnurp

Rubeus Hagrid - Rubeus Gygrid

Tom Marvolo Riddle - Tom Dredolo Venster (His name is anagramed to "Voldemort den Store" which means "Voldemort the Great.)

In the Danish books, Voldemort's name isn't Tom. It's Romeo. Irony anyone?

Romeo? eek ... rofl

Just because English names sound strange in another language, I presumed that the translations kept the names the same because I read plenty of books where characters have unusual names. As a result, I find this information very interesting!

ROMEO!!! What. the. Fudgemister? That is so beyond weird. And I also thought that they would keep the names through the process of translation. It' is so.... odd.
And Galtvort, it just so wrong as Hogwats.
As is Ronny Wiltersen!!!!!!!!! *shudders at difference*
But Umbridge's name is funny, as is Slur's.
And HUMLESNURR! for DUMBLEDORE! AH! so so so so so SO WRONG!
And McSnurp?

I'm sorry, it's just so wrong compared to what I've lives by since I was five!!!!

I know what you mean Panda. It is a very scary world we Norwegians (and seemingly the Danish) people live in.

Humle means bumblebee... Snurr means a whirl... McSnurp.. Sounds grumpy.

Wiltersen is a name I'd rather not speculate about.

Sirius Black - Sirius Svaart

James Potter - Jacob Potter

Peter Pettigrew - Petter Pittelpytt

Remus Lupin - Remus Lupus (Remus has turned into a disease! Whoopiedoo!)

Padfoot - Tasselabb (labb means paw.)

Prongs - Horn

Moony - Luna (Wow. Remus has suddenly turned into an absentminded Ravenclaw with Lupus?)

Wormtail - Ormsvans (That's a direct translation. Orm means worm and svans is a name for a rat tail.)

Bellatrix Lestrange - Bellatrix DeMons (Mons is what we call a tomcat here..)

Cornelius Fudge - Kornelius Blouf

Gilderoy Lockhart - Gyldeprinz Gulmedal (I keep thinking that the translator has just spelled "Gyldenprins Gullmedal" in a really weird way, in which case it means "Goldenprince Goldmedal...)

Freaky names!

Now if anyone's read the books in another language, please share! I wanna know how messed up the Harry Potter translators are! biggrin

In the spanish version the names stay the same but the translation of the story itself is horrible!! They translate it literally so a lot of the sentences make no sense. Like in one they want to say Harry was embarrassed BUT they translated "embarrassed" as "embarazado" which means pregnant!! It's a shame because it ruins a great story.

Yes, but you must remember that a computer translator doesn't know that you're putting in a name.

A computer translator? Books aren't translated by computers, but by human beings.

Heh, I know that. But I thought the original poster had used a computer translator.

One really good example of translations not having the same impact is the first sentence about the Dursleys in SS.

"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley ,of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say they were perfectly normal, thank you very much."

That's the English version. In the Spanish version, it translates without the sarcasm, so instead of saying 'thank you very much,' it says 'unfortunately.' Like Spanish speaking people aren't sarcastic.

Kitsune your signature made me lose the game.

As for the names I don't get why the have to translate them. I understand that the names would sound weird to people who speak other lanuages but still. Plus there are really weird names in books that are english. I was reading a book where one of the girls names were Tanith ( Okay so it's not that weird. ) I suppose the names seem really odd to us because we don't speak that lanuage to them they are as normal as the names that are used in the english books. A lot of the books are lost in translation which really sucks.

I can understand changing the names that the Marauders went by because they are in a way English terms, not names. But other names, unless there is like an actual specific different name for that, like how John in English is Juan in Spanish, they shouldn't change them.

The Norwegian translated version of Harry Potter seems more... childish than the original English version. It's not because something has been removed or edited out, but just due the to way it's written.

When I was a kid, I couldn't understand why everyone didn't understand Norwegian.. It seemed so natural! It is in a way a very natural sounding language... But it can easily sound very childish.

For example when I listen to the Norwegian politicians, I get a distinguished feeling that they're only playing politics and country.

(Whole buisness with them not sending Mular Krekar out of the country faster than a dementor with a patronus after it's behind, makes them even more riddiculus. Who in their right minds protect a terrorist?!)

And Nanatsuiro... My making-people-lose-the-game skills are amazing.

...There was a girl at a con that came up on the scene, just to declare that she'd lost the game... D:

And yeah, some of the names in the Harry Potter books can be described as weird.... But dude. The names they've given them is ever weirder.

Their names have a literal Norwegian meaning. At least some of the names does. "Slur" for example. "Slu" means sly... "Lur" means cunning. Errm... It's also a subtle word for "p***s"...

"Humlesnurr" as well. "Humle" means Bumblebee. "Snurr" means twirl.

"Lupus" is a disease. Wow. Does this mean Remus suffer from an auto-immune?

Neville Longbottom - Nilus Langballe

Langballe would be "Longballs"

Tonks is Dult. "Å dulte" - "To push"

Argus Filtch - Argus Nask. "Å Naske" "To Steal" (Naske is when you steal for example some candy from a store.)

Madam Hooch has become "Madam Hopp". In other words "Madam Jump"

Bins has turned into "Kiste" which is a treasure chest.... Or a coffin.

Vernon is called "Wiktor". And Victor Krum is still "Victor"...
