The all-too-important topic. BUYING the sax.

What do you look for?

I always try saxes before I buy them. I research what kind of saxes people thing are good, then I try out a bunch of those horns to decide which of those is the best.

What about for online buys?

I really advise against buying online. You really never know what you're gonna get. Trust me, there are some pretty big differences between individual saxes by the way they play.

I've already checked the local pawn shops, etc.

They're double what I can get for a better looking sax.

Yeah, looks arent everything, I get what I pay for, etc, but I'm on a very limited budget.

The Internet is of course cheaper to deal with as well.

Hoo boy, looks are FAR from everything. But naturally a pawn shop is going to charge more for instruments. Plus, many of those saxes are probably vintage, so they are naturally going to be more expensive.

But really don't look at pawn shops. Don't you have any local music stores? If you do (which you should) ask to try some of their saxes.

Nothing's stopping you from getting one from the net, but trust me, you're likely to end up spending your cash well when you try the sax out. This doesn't mean you have to buy a knew one. In fact, used saxes actually tend to work better than newer ones. This is mainly because the springs are broken in, so the tension is at an optimal strength.
