as I am taking a physical geography class in the summer i figured it would be cool to ask what you guys thought about geography and your fantasy world, is it something thats really important as for how far something is, or any themes of geography play a cruicial part in your worlds and stories?

I guess that my world is very bland. All it is one giant @$$ mountain with caves running through the inside of it. At the base is a house for one of the 'deities' of the mountain, almost at the top is another 'deity'. At the very top is an area that WAS basically a barren wasteland that later turns into a area of pure beauty when one of the characters died. on the tip is a castle. Most of the mountain consists of forests.
I'd say that sounds much like it.

I think it is important, although I haven't really considered to what extent for my story. For me, the character is stuck inside a train in which a small detail changes when she exits and re-enters a certain room. And one of the details is the scenery outside the window.
But there's probably a lot more that can be done with geography. Like in Eragon! 3nodding

Much agreed Cali! I made a map of one of the continents from one of my fantasy worlds but I can honestly say I had no idea where to start things off from. I have no way of sharing that map with anyone right now but maybe I will someday.

I would love to try and make a mag of my world, but it would end up looking like a green pile of crap.

I very much doubt that cuz I thought my maps would end up as piles of puke and they actually ended up rather well. At least I was comfortable enough with how they ended up looking anyway... mrgreen

I am trying to make different geographical maps of when things started to change before the big changes geographically and after, almost like what it was before and when new locations were invented I add it to a new map.

That sounds good! Say, do you usually go with average things like, huge mountain ranges in the middle of the continents or do you sometimes place a mountain in the oddest of places? I don't think I've done anything like this myself yet.

i give it a taste of regular mountain ranges but then of course have them in odd places to make the stories seem more interesting.

That's a good idea! I thought maybe only I had thought of it but I guess not, eh? mrgreen
I suppose that if people have been thinking of floating continents or things like that, then I should have known better, you know? sweatdrop
Question: What is the oddest thing out of these?
1. An island city in the middle of a huge lake that has something to hide it from the outside world. 2. Or an active volcano in the middle of a huge lake that has hermits (or other kind of beings) living near it?

♦ I try to be realistic when I'm making any sort of landmass. My current WIP is mainly one large continent with a lot of coast, divided into two countries.
The northern country is colder, choked by pine and birch forests, has taller mountains in the north that give way to lower more rounded mountains in the south. It's coast lines are generally rocky and the ocean up there is usually chill in the summer and iced over almost completely in the winter.
the southern country is a bit different. the northern end of it is much like the southern end of the northern country but it get warmer a lot quicker as you head further south. the pine and birch forests soon give way to low, low foothills that become swamp and then finally as you reach the coast, tropical mangrove estuaries. I have yet to flesh out all the details on a map though. The topography of my little nations only hatched about three days ago. It's so little and cute. whee ♦

The map doesn't really become important until the third book of my trilogy. Until then all you need to know is that Anga and Trilia are two planets that orbit each other, Trilia is smaller than Anga, and they're about to open a couple cans of whoop-a** on each other. Most of the story takes place either inside their planetary army bases, the surrounding towns or IIIIIN SPAAAACE. Maybe I'll get around to drawing a map sooner or later.
