On that day Hero watched the sun come up from his resting place beneath the shade of an umbrella thorn tree and felt as if he was watching it rise into the sky for the first time. The ocean lay somewhere in that direction, if Amanzi could be believed. That young lioness had no reason to lie that he could imagine. He hadn’t seen her in two days.

Hero lifted himself from his grass bed and stretched with a loud yawn and shook out his great pink mane. He decided he may as well go look for breakfast.

Aryaisha stirred as the sun started to rise, he had been up late the night before traveling across the savanna so when he stretched and one of his paws hit open air he froze in confusion and fear. It took a moment for his sleep fogged mind to clear enough for him to remember climbing a low tree to sleep in the night before. After a moment more Ary jumped down the few feet to the ground and continued to stretch out all of the kinks that sleeping in a tree can create.

Once he was situated and fully awake Aryaisha started walk across the grassland as the sun slowly rose farther in the sky. He had been wandering aimlessly for the past few weeks, meeting other lions, leopards, and others, just enjoying his life and this day was looking to be more of the same. When his stomach gave a growl he quickly looked around and saw a herd of antelope in the distance by a watering hole. Perfect he thought as he started to stalk towards the herd.

Suddenly something startled the herd. Hero came leaping out of the golden grass and gave chase to the young antelope in the back of the group. His pink mane bounced and blazed in the orange sunlight and as he pursued the fawn he cursed it for having given him away yet again. He might yet catch the fawn, but he would need to run fast.

Aryaisha was almost in position when something startled the antelope and they took off running. A shock of bright pink sprang out of the tall grass a little ways to across from Ary but he was so focused on a kill that he only while he registered the color and movement he did not let it distract him. A older antelope veers off from the group, perfect target. Ary gives chase. He was tiring quickly when lady luck smiled on him and the antelope stumbled. Using his body weight and his forward momentum he took down the antelope, snapped neck. When he looked up the rest of the herd was still going but the flash of pink that he had seen earlier was reviled to be a lion, male to be exact.

The target bobbed and weaved and clawed the earth with sharp hooves. But Hero closed in undaunted. False starts like this were common for a lion whose mane was as brightly colored as the setting sun. When he hit adolescence he almost thought he would starve to death after the death of his mentor because of his bright mane giving him away, forcing him to sprint for his prey like some kind of chubby cheetah. As Hero often said with more than a touch of sarcasm, Well, practice makes perfect! He flung out a paw, tripping the fawn with ease. It tumbled over and tried to right herself in a hurry, but Hero was on top of her, his chest heaving from exertion. “Not bad kid… not good en—”

A thick pair of horns attached to an even studier skull suddenly slammed the would be king of the jungle in the side, sending him stumbling off his catch. The fawn took off like a lightning bolt, and so did the cheap-shot gazelle that saved it. Hero bounded after them. After a couple of strides he was forced to give up the chase. They were too far ahead of him now and he was still winded from catching that little one. Head hung low, Hero trudged back to the watering hole to quench his thirst and catch his breath under a veil of mutters and swears.

Aryaisha watched the drama unfold. How the 'kid', for that was the vibe that he got, almost had his fawn when and older gazelle knocked the 'kid' off. Ouch! Ary mentally winced as he watched the other male get to his feet and try to catch his pray once more. When the pink maned lion was forced to give up and returned back to the nearest watering hole Ary started in on his kill.

Before He had even gone partially in his conscious got the better of him, Kid's got it harder then you do and you spooked his meal. his little Jiminy Cricket voice said while the little devil on his shoulder argued that he didn't spook them and he didn't owe the kid nothin'. Ary just made a face and drug the rest of the antelope to the watering hole where he dropped it then backed off. He then called out to the 'Kid', "You should work on your speed cuz you need a edge to compensate for your coloring."

The smell of fresh blood distracted Hero from lapping up the water. His gaze drifted up to the brown male and curled up his lip. “Pardon me?”

An opportunist would have thanked the male kindly for his kill and dragged it off with his head held high. Sadly, Hero was a lion of a very different color. “That’s funny. I don’t know what chase you were watching, but I had that baby gazelle right under my paws before that cheating buck turned around and cheap-shotted me in the ribs. I am a hell of a lot faster than you.”

Aryaisha just stood there and took stock of the other male; about the same height and weight, a few years in age, and coloring. Over all not all that different. "Look I could care less if you 'think' you could beat me in a race. The fact is when hunting your bright colors are a hindrance and speed will give you an edge. Yeah I saw you bring down that baby and I saw you got knocked over by the adult, even saw you try to go after them again. You got skill, not doubting that, you need that with your coloring but it looks to me like you still need some work. Babies and old are good targets but babies come with the added hindrance of moms and dads where the elders normally done, granted they are more deadly with there horns and hooves. That's why I said you need to work on your speed, 'the better to dodge you with'."

Ary couldn't figure out why he felt compelled to teach this male anything, normally he would have joked and left it at that but instead he wanted to help.

Hero rolled his eyes. “Well excuse me for being daring and picking a slightly more challenging target than you. While I appreciate your sympathy, I never asked for your advice or your help, thank you very much.”

He turned around defiantly and started to walk off, leaving the other male with his kill and taking his empty stomach with him. This had nothing to do with fur color. Hero didn’t believe in accepting charity from strangers. There was no reason for him to put his burden on the shoulders of another and he would have felt shamed if he allowed himself to accept the other male’s charity.

Aryaisha just let the other lion talk, he had a point he never asked for Ary's help or advice and while Ary did not mean to convey sympathy it is possible that it was how he came across. While the pink and yellow lion walked away Ary suddenly called out, "You'r right you didn't ask for my advice, nor for my sympathy, nor for my help but maybe you would be willing to help me out."

Ary looked at the rest of his kill that he left a little ways away, "I hunt when I am hungry and while I was hungry I was not that hungry. The bigger they are the more there is to eat and I would rather not leave what is left for the birds." Vultures were already starting to circle, just waiting for the lions that were there to leave. "If you don't want it that's fine the vultures will have a fine meal." After saying this Ary walked to the water, turning his back to the male and the meal, letting the male decide what he would do.

Though his stomach rumbled an angry protest Hero continued walking away from the other lion and his tactful offer. No matter how gently he phrased it, Hero wanted nothing to do with charity.

Besides, birds need to eat, too.

He knew he was behaving immaturely. He knew that he was risking his health by refusing to take opportunities. He remembered that he had failed to catch a meal the other day and knew that if he failed again today he would have even less energy to spare tomorrow. He knew it was stupid. But he never thought about turning back. As he left the watering hole in the distance he growled at that other male and shook out his mane, blaming him for his hunger in spite of himself, thinking that he would rather fight for survival than accept a pity breakfast from some lion who obviously thought he was better than him. Already tired from the chase, he would simply find a shady place to recover his stamina and look for another herd.

((Fin~ Sorry that didn't go so well, but that's Hero for you. ^^"))
