"The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness."
•Life of the party Name: Levi Redd (But please, call him Redd. Levi is so... biblical.) Stage: Beverage Likes: Contests, challenges, logic puzzles, pretty women, fast rides, parties, attention, fiddle music, dancing, moonlight, tall tales, bargaining. Dislikes: Old people, the overly-pious, being ignored, having nothing to do, sitting still, losing. Hopes: To be really challenged, to become legendary. Fears: Rejection, failure, and that he'll run out of opponents. Beliefs: Whatever the hell he wants to believe! Strengths Confident, outgoing, intelligent, persistent, honours a deal, good at negotiating. Weaknesses: Narcissistic, easily insulted, hotheaded, showy, overbearing, cheats. Personality: Levi Redd is a traditional Southern gentleman (Read: Georgia) insofar as he is in possession of the flair for showmanship and lazy good manners that usually could only be cultivated with pots of money and too much free time. He's all quick wit and cleverness, all flash and flair with seemingly little substance, the type of person who is all anyone is talking about for a week after any party he attends. Nothing seems to please him more than a new toy, whether that toy is lady to flirt with, a fast ride, or a party to attend, and he loves telling people incredibly exaggerated stories of his (largely fictional) connections and the exploits of his (TOTALLY imaginary) family and ancestors.
Despite this, there's a totally unchallenged intellect beneath his glib smile and Southern courtesies. His showmanship can be taken as mere self-indulgence, but all the trouble he gets himself into is more of a way to shake up his life. He gladly accepts any sort of challenge that comes his way, and his skills lie in negotiation, word puzzles, and intellect puzzles. (He's also a horrible cheat, and he admits it often- For some reason, everyone thinks he's making a joke. However, he always honours his deals.) He loves trying to do things other people say are strange, dangerous, or impossible- He would GLADLY go down to Georgia and strike a bargain at some dark crossroads at midnight. (Who needs souls anyway? He wasn't even using his!) But no matter what he does, his thoughts are always on himself. Everything is for his own benefit or pleasure, and very little can persuade him to act otherwise.
Did he mention he plays the fiddle?
-Joseph Conrad

"There surely is in human nature an inherent propensity to extract all the good out of all the evil."
•Our unfortunate heroine Name: Katherine Hunt Age: 25 Occupation: Clarinet player Likes: Wednesdays, raspberries, cold weather, cities at night, jazz music, cable television, and Chinese take out. Dislikes: Traffic accidents, crowds, sporting events, self-absorbed jerks (Supposedly), having to cook/clean/do chores in general, and Saturday nights. Hopes: To become more well-known and to write an autobiography. Fears: Commitment, getting lost, remembering too much. Beliefs: That she'll end up somewhere nice. Strengths Takes responsibility, witty, observant. Weaknesses: Forgetful, bad at money-managing, temperamental. Personality: Katherine is somewhat reclusive after her husband died in a car crash coming home from a soccer game, leaving her a young widow with funeral debts to pay and a life to restructure. She moved on as time went by, but remains afraid of commitment and even more afraid of car trips. She travels a lot less than she used to, which makes it harder for her to find work, but she manages. She has a quietly humorous personality, and enjoys intelligent conversation as much as she enjoys raspberry ice cream and Jeopardy on weekday nights.

"Active evil is better than passive good."
•Where it all began
HyTech - Maxwell The feline bartender grins at you from across the counter, his hands busy as he creates your special cocktail – not just any cocktail, but a C*cktail, what with an asterix and everything. "I'm delighted to be doing this for you, you know," he says, and you wonder how his deft hands can measure and pour without his taking his eyes off you, "it's an absolute pleasure."When you look down, your cocktail is done. It is pristine and perfect. As you reach to admire it, he taps your fingers with a velveteen digit. "Finishing touches," he explains, and empties a solution from a small metal pellet into the drink. He slides a coaster under, and it is now truly complete. You decide it's best not to drink it, now that it's obviously spiked.
-William Blake
