I don't know how many of you this applies topic applies to but I know that this year the marching band that I'm gonna be section leader and secretary of is going to be experiencing many changes... First off, the band director that we have had for over thirty years is retiring which is really sad since so many people enjoy him as the director. And the new band director that we are getting is pretty much fresh out of college so I don't know how good she will work with our forty-something second-in-command band director that will be staying. The second change is that of our band camp which is going to be changing after over twenty years of our band going there... And after going there for two years myself, I have to say that I'm going to miss it. And the last change that is actually good is that we're getting completely new uniforms. Since I'm one of the few that has seen them, I have to say that I really like them compared to our old ones and they should be cooler in the terms of heat which is a huge plus because our old uniforms were wool..
Well, since this is a discussion I would like to know if your band if experiencing/experienced some major changes recently. You can also comment on the changes that I described above and give your input in on those subjects.

we just changed things up a few years ago, wool uniforms to cotton (white to black, too, so it looks awesome to have 276 kids in full black just standing at perfect attention on the field... we changed our basic horn positions too, which nobody liked, but we (almost) got over it now...

It is definately hard to get a new band director, especially when you loved the one you used to have and everything he did worked well. Right before my junior year of high school, my band director passed away due to a heart attack and we also got someone who was fresh out of college. I honestly liked him and got along with him although his method was very different from how we had learned it at first. The problem is that he used the method that he had learned from a director of a college band. While the theory is sound and it works, you really have to know your students. What worked for the college doesn't always work for the high school. In all honesty, I didn't really understand the method until I went to college and ended up a member of the same band that he had learned from.

It is really hard getting a new band director, we got a new one this year. I guess it's pretty hard becuase band is a family and the director is part of the family. Our band director just turned 25, he's also basically fresh out of college. We had some major changes. They were changes for the better. We got many new programs, pops concerts, parades and such that our old director never did. We also got new uniforms which is GREAT! Another thing that our band really appreciated was we got to keep all of our traditions, freshman initiation traditions, trip traditions, everything. Just remember that there are going to be good changes too. You might actually like them. If your band has any traditions that you want to keep I suggest you talk to the director about them, maybe she'll let you keep them. Good luck with everything!
