Delicate fingers tear in to packed dirt and shake out green sprouts. Dirty knees press onward, clods of soil fly through the air. Small beads of sweat begin to form over a black brow. There are several others along with Weiwin sprinkled about a firestone pit pulling up vegetation. Not a very glamorous job, but it has to be done and often too – this hothouse climate is a veritable paradise for green growth. Weiwin casually drags a wrist across her forehead; she can just feel her skin radiating heat. By mid morning the white, short sleeveless tunic she donned is blotched with sweat stains and her face is smudged.
----
Earlier that day… The sun had not even risen yet, and this young one was already hustling about. She had had her klah and eaten her sweet bread, tied her hair back in a neat bun. The day was just ticking away. On the bill for this morning’s chore was making sure that the firestone pits and the surrounding areas were free of vegetation. Come noon it would be too hot to be chasing around outside under the direct spotlight of the sun.
----
Her eyes wander upward to the sky where various dragons move about lazily. The small knot in her gut is temporarily nullified. She feels the pressure on her shoulders lift – how can one be worried when such graceful creatures are around? She returns to her work, humming the Duty song with an ironic smile twisting her mouth.

[[If I was supposed to wait for Okassis, please tell me and I will delete this post]]He could practically feel his skin frying, his hair collecting sweat and likely beginning to frazzle a little under the heated conditions. He can only be thankful that it's somewhat short, and lament that it's not long enough to pull back away from his neck. Still, Fenferari never complained about his lot and he wasn't about to start now. The ground needed to be cleared of green.
Digging his fingers in deep, the boy did his best to make sure he got all of the wormy little roots before pulling the plant out. He was filthy all over. Before lunch came, he'd fancy himself a dip into the boy's communal bath back in the Weyr. But this was far beyond some of the other chores he had been assigned thusfar. Tedious, but undifficult, the only trying part of it being the sweltering heat. He didn't glance up at the dragons flying overhead more than once, but he thought of them as he worked. And when the music started, he perked some, shaken out of the daze the calming task had put him into.
Blue-gray eyes landed Weiwin, watching her for a moment as she worked. Not music, he corrected himself. Humming. Fenferari turned his head back to his work, a small smile touching his features. That was nice, he thought, to have something to work to, getting the joke. Although he was normally a quiet individual, he found himself joining in with her, accompanying with soft tenor notes.

Weiwin hadn’t felt those blue-gray eyes on her, but she did look up quickly when a voice joined hers. It was soothing to harmonize with the tenor, she herself being an alto. She never would have made it as a singer or musician in the Harper Hall – her father had looked for such an aptitude in her from a young age. However, she had learned her ballads and was able to rattle out rhythms on drums. Some things just did not seem to change over the turns, and the Duty song happened to be one such thing. She followed this line of thinking while keeping up with Fenferari in their humming. She hadn’t paid the fellow Candidate much attention when they had gathered earlier for this task. He was a fairly attractive boy, though she didn’t let that bother her. The small smile on her face must have been over the progress they all were making. Her brow furrowed as she worked at a particularly stubborn patch of green. In her digging she barked a finger on a rock, giving out a low “Oo!” in surprise. She inspected the digit and saw blood forming. Blood? She blinked, and then blinked again. Her head wobbled and she looked as if she were dizzy before her body sagged and she passed out.

Ariaen silently worked, pulling at the weeds. She wasn't happy with being out in the backing sun doing this, but it got her away from most of the other weyrbrats. Especially the girls. She looked silently as Weiwin and Fenferari hummed. The boy was good looking, she supposed, but like everything else, it wasn't like she would actually get a boy to like her or anything.
Her temper usually got in the way before anything could form.
She watched as the girl fainted. "Damnit..." she muttered before slowly crawling over to her. Ari wiped the girl's finger of blood with an extra cloth, making sure to not rip it open further. She took out a small bandage from the pack on her hip and wound it around the wound. She then took out an herb known for waking people up from faintings and crushed it up in her hand.
"I don't know why I'm doing this..." she muttered again, holding her hand at Weiwin's nose.

She had a fear of blood, it just made her sick. She couldn't stand the sight of it - as evidenced by her reaction to the small amount that had wound it's way around her finger. It certainly was not something that she was very proud of and she had no idea how to get over a fear of this nature. When she came to, her nose wrinkled and her eyes opened to a girl holding a pungent herb. Her brow did a funky roll and she blinked.
"What is that dreadful thing?" She tried her hardest not to smile at the sound of her own voice. Embarrassment. Yes, that is what she ought to feel right about now. She slowly moved to sit upright. "You got rid of the blood? thank you..." She sighed.

Ariaen moved back, placing the remnants of the herbs in her back. She eyed the girl indifferently, trying to not scowl. "It wasn't like stick boy over there was doing anything. You could have gotten something much worse being passed out in this sharding heat." Ari grumbled a bit before moving back to her patch of green.
Now everyone could go back to ignoring her. That would be good.

"Stick boy" was not there to be pointed out. He had looked over at the interruption in the song and saw Weiwin pass out while holding her injured finger. Before he could move for her, however, another female had come and attended her. Looked like she knew what she was doing, and when he saw the herb he knew the dear girl would be in proper hands and left him free to move.
No, he was just on his way back to the lot of candidates, a skin carried in one hand. It was water- seemed like he'd come to the same conclusion as Ariaen. Even if he did think his temporary duet partner had passed out from the sight of blood, it could very well have been the heat. The skin would be offered to Weiwin as soon as he reached them, his eyes flickering over to take Ariaen. Another healer? He felt a little warm, and not from the heat, not knowing what had been said in his absence. That pouch of herbs was a marvelous idea- why didn't he have one of those? Perhaps when he was finished, he would ask her. Right now he simply nodded to her, gave her a grateful smile. He wouldn't have been able to wake the girl so easily.

She glanced up as feet came back. It was stick boy... where'd he go off to? Not that it mattered much to Ari. The smile he gave her was quite different, and it threw her off guard for a moment. He smiled at her? Did he not know her reputation with the weyrbrat and candidate girls? She was, for the lack of a better term, a b***h, and every one knew it.
Except for these two.
Ariaen gave him a curt nod in reply and turned back to her earth. People were being nice to her... Shards, next thing you'd see her on the back of a dragon as a rider.
What was Pern coming to?

She twisted back to her fours and almost resumed working, but paused first to say, “I owe you one!” to Ariaen. She looked down briefly and gave a little shake of her head – she’d be washing these clothes tonight. At that, she gave a careless flick of her tousled hair and got started again. She threw a furtive glance around for the tenor; it had been nice just humming, even if it was just a repetitive tune. Then there was the quick acting of Ariaen: Weiwin had taken for granted that this girl was just like the rest of the bubbly backdrop that most girls belong to. This task certainly asked little of the mind, which left hers to wander. She simply stared at the ground until her eyes glazed over.

Ariaen sighed again and shook her head. That girl looked like such a space case. The green eyed girl turned back to her work and concentrated on getting the green up. Still, it was kind of nice to know that someone owned her something. She wasn't sure exactly what she'd do with that power, but it was nice to have regardless.

In the time it took Ariaen to sigh, Fenferari had approached Weiwin with an offering of water. It took her a moment to register the appropriate emotion – an appreciative little smile tipped her long mouth – which was followed by a hand accepting the skin. She gave a quiet ‘Thank you” after taking a swig of water, not quite cool anymore but refreshing all the same. For good measure, Weiwin took one more drink, then, handed the skin back over to Fenferari. Before he could get back to work she asked, “What is your name?” It was a shame that she had yet to learn the names of fellow Candidates, not that she had planned on being one for long, however, she promised herself to start with these two.
Candidates might move on, but it might be wise to learn more about those around her – whatever their station, it certainly couldn't hurt to be aware of the people in the Weyr.

The girl asked his name, which was a bit of a surprise to him, but certainly not unpleasant. "I'm Fenferari," He told her with a small smile, not at all shy like his silence may have suggested. "You're welcome. Just take it a bit easier now, hm? A pair of gloves may suit you for the next time, if I may say so."
He came back to rest in a new spot, between the two girls. Perhaps that was a little bold, but he was a little in need of friends right now, or just a positive presence. Ever since he'd been here, it felt like he was only being yelled at or bossed around. His roommate was no pocket of sunshine either.
"You..." He turned his head slightly toward Ariaen as he put his hands back in the dirt, "Are you a healer?"

Ariaen looked up at the boy, quite shocked he was talking to her. "I have some basic training, but not enough to be an Apprentice. So, no not really," she said, her voice controlled. Shocked was not an emotion she showed most people. Rage, anger, frustration, yet. Shock? Not so much. She kept her voice level and regarded him like most of the other boys; warmer than the girls, but not totally friendly. He did seem nice though, so she had to be at least pleasant to the boy.

She took her first tentative stab into the mashed earth, not that it was that much of a feat considering there was a whole chain gang at work around her. They were all just missing matching clothes and a song. Well, Weiwin wasn’t in the mood or position to start up again with her humming – Fen had moved up to create a nice row of characters (two no-speakies and a saucy one). To Weiwin's surprise, however, the three of them seemed to be forming a fine group. Time would tell whether or not actual lasting friendships would form, not that Weiwin was particularly on the market for such. She liked to keep her own council, at least on the important matters, after all. Instead, she just contented herself to listen to the saucy one and Fen. Not that they had much to talk about: life? the weather? It was, however, comforting to know that she was next to two potential healers.
Aside from the pleasantries floating in the humid air, Weiwin thought it at least a little intriguing to watch the other girl in this traveling trio of weeders (coming soon to a hold near you). Weiwin imagined that she wasn’t quite so different from her; so, she ignored the girl. She would work on finding her name out later. Instead, she casually asked “Who is heading to the kitchen after this?”
Noon was just about come, and it might even be that the leader of the work release program could call time before anyone decided to answer.
