I dont think all of Modern Jazz is spastic it's pretty much Modal. If you wanna think spastic think Ornette Coleman it's the free jazz aspect of it that makes it unique.

Alot of what made John Coltrane famous was modern jazz like Giant Steps and A Love Supreme.

The group that recorded Kind of Blue Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb were playing modern jazz.

So i dont hate it and i dont think it's too random even the atonal stuff is cool to me. Mingus did alot of that stuff just like Ornette Coleman.

I wasnt offended i was just trying to check to see that your definition of modern jazz was the same as mine. It sounded that your idea of it was free jazz.

Oh ok. Yeah that sounds about right. I'm talking about random notes at random times, with every instrument playing a different key etc

Who, or what would you refer to as "modern jazz?" Joshua Redman? Branford Marsallis? Walter Smith? Dave Holland?

Well, as for me, I like modern "classical" music (non jazz) I haven't heard much modern jazz, but the ones I have heard are pretty good. I've even composed a modern classical piece of my own! It's pretty interesting, you should hear it! domokun I've said before that more electronics should be incorporated into jazz because then you can accomplish the otherwise impossible. 3nodding

Eh, sorry. I consider myself a modern jazz player in all aspects (yes I do free jazz among other things), so I really have a biased opinion on this. But, modern jazz is not spastic, and furthermore, you need to define what you MEAN by modern jazz exactly. We could call any number of things modern jazz, from the guys Saur mentioned to people like Dave Douglas. It's too broad to make a generalization.
