I've had a few people ask me recently whether or not I'd be interested in relaxing my stance on RPing, or whether they could post off-topic discussion here that they felt that people might enjoy.
Since we only have one forum and I didn't want it to become cluttered, I wasn't too keen on the idea.
But now, we have the option of using the gold in the guild's account to buy sub-fora for 2,500 gold each, so I'd like some input from you guys. I'm not saying that the staff'll necessarily agree with everything said, but hopefully, we can compromise if we need to.
I'm thinking that maybe we could have an off-topic sub-forum and an RP sub-forum.
Both of these would need Moderators, however - and whilst I have members of the existing staff who I hope would be fine with taking that on if I asked, I'd need to check first.
But I thought that it might be worth measuring demand.
The alternative would be to formalise into structures such as a cartoon forum, comic forum, game forum and whatnot, or a forum for each continuity, and leave the central forum for general discussion - but since I don't know how easy it would be to move topics inbetween fora if they were mis-posted, and it might stifle the amount of comparison discussion we have now.
So I'd be rather reluctant to do it; but I'd welcome feedback to consider for the future, now that we have the option.
A fan-works forum, maybe? Would anyone object to the staff having a private forum to catch up with each other easily?
Any thoughts? Any more ideas? It's your gold, after all.
(Although I'm sorry if I come across as a dictator for saying this, but one thing I won't entertain the idea of is a spam sub-forum. I've said from the outset that I try to encourage discussion here, and spam is spam. It's not so special that it has to be done privately here, rather than in the Chatterbox.)

Personally, I'd advise againt that. I used to moderate a sonic-based forum about this size on EzBoard, and one of the severe problems that eventually killed the board was that we had loads of subforums for different Sonic topics and they got very few posts at any one time.... generally only one topic that actually had anything going on with it each. The problem is that unless you have a really busy forum, breaking things up just appears to leave you with a lot of very slow forums that get the occasional post, whereas concentrating that lot into one forum means you actually get something resembling busyness. I may be wrong, but that's my initial thoughts on the affair.
However, I'd say an RP subforum is a good idea. Those tend to be busy, so they could survive on their own away from the rest of the topics.
Sorry if I'm not making a lot of sense here, but I've just been out night-larping, and only grabbed a few hours sleep....

My sentiments precisely, which is why I said it's not something that I'd want to do. But I'd rather at least acknowledge it as an option than leave people wondering why I didn't.

I like the idea of subforums because it gives a place a sense of organization. But if you feel they might kill the guild...well, it's your call really. neutral
I also think the main forum should be the place where all things Sonic are discussed. I agree that dividing it will really stifle the activity in this guild. Three other subforums are enough: RPs, Fanworks, and Off-Topic Discussion.
I'm also OK with the idea of the Mods having their own subforum. It sounds like something you guys will really need in the long run. 3nodding

I am more than happy to moderate a forum.
*banishes thought of Drow RP from head*
No seriously, I will help out and I approve of the idea of the staff forum.

Although you know I'd keep an eye on it myself, you know that you'd be the person I'd ask to look after an RP forum, if you're up for it. smile

I've had this thread open for just over one week, and the concensus of the people who've responded seems to be with the idea of:
Off-topic forum RP forum Fan-works forum Crew forum
So I'll go with that. I'll try to set up the off-topic forum and crew forum straight away. Bear with me on fan-works and RP, since the intros to those - RP especially - will probably take me a little longer, and I've goit a pile of RL issues to work through already.
EDIT: I've also set up fan-works and moved any relevant threads I could find in the main forum into it. The formal intro's in the works.

Oh, yeah, while I think of it: is there any other use for guild money?

Since I'm a tad harassed at the moment, I've asked Chris Kitmyth - who's kindly agreed to be the RP Moderator - to help me with the guidelines for the RP forum and general set-up.
I know that I've been threatening to set it up for a while now, but hopefully delegating means that one or the other of us will get it sorted out before too long.

Aye, I'm working on it.
Im working on getting back into my writing side, I've been RPing in IMs before so pretty soon things should be up and ready.
I have what I want to write, its a case I have to put it down on paper...or electronic format.

After much dilly-dallying, we've got some RP guidelines in place. I'm now just waiting for word from Chris that he's free for Modding duties at the moment before we formally open the forum.
Sorry for the delay, folks. smile
